we all see the movies with the party scenes and what most pro freeskiers do w/ thier time whrn there not sking, but do you know of nay straight edge freeskiers?

sure there are streight edge skiers in the scene. does it matter though? will it make them less cool if they are? you shouldn't worry about what skiers do for partying, it is their skiing that yoiu should focus on.

Me. Lots of people are. I mean, you dont have to do all that stuff along with skiing... I just think most people think that way because of the skiing pros who do that and stuff.

I think it's just a byproduct of a good time spent in the snow and then in a cabin. I went up with my college team several times last year (UC Davis) and drinking and smoking are just the norm when you're in desolate cabins. Only thing that sucks is that there are few cute skiier girls. Anyways, sure beats building snowmen.

to be honest though, do u really care how much some pro skier can drink verus knowing whether or not they can throw a switch corked 9?

there is a glamourous side to every professional sport, but thats not the norm

I dunno, drugs and alcohol aren't for me. so if that make me straight edge then cool I guess. with the whole apres ski thing, skiing culture definately has a strong party aspect to it, but some of the best ski areas (targhee, kicking horse, etc.) have no party scene, so just ski where you're comfortable. Also, skiing has plenty of hotties, you just gotta know where to look!

well im edge...its nice to see a few others, and yes that band was minor threat. Straight edge isnt sumthing you really are or are not its sort of a self proclaimed group heavily related to hardcore/punk music, there are alot of hardcore bands around that use straight edge based lyrics in their songs, you can also find clothing and record companies dedicated to the lifestyle, check it out or talk to me if anyone is interested in learning more

I am definitely not straight edge by any means, but I dont go around bragging about what I do, or I dont rag on kids who are straight edge.. its everyone choice and if your a cool kid I could give a shit what you do in your free time... but extreme sports like skiing and snowboarding, the chance of kids being straight edge is very slim, especially the older the kids.... maybe the younger ones, who just havent experiences alot of shit in life yet

I think it does matter what skiers do for partying, drinking, drugs, etc. If they realize it or not, alot of kids look up to them as their role model. All these kids are going to see Tanner and want to be just like him, and they'll imitate everything he does. I know he's still a young guy and he didn't chose to be a role model, but as a professional athlete, he is.

^ ya i definitely agree with you on there. He is definitely immature in alot of ways and either doesnt realize how much of a role model he is, or doesnt really care. Those pro's are hugggggge role models to alot of younger kids, and older ones for that matter. Shit, alot of kids or parents drop 1,500 to send themselves/children to ski with pros, if they arent supposed to be role models i dunno who is

i agree..but its funny how that works...you would think athletes would want to take care of their bodies and stay healthy and in control of their minds so they could compete and ski better

^ true, some do, some don't... but alot of young pro athletes in extreme sports have extreme minds, with extreme amount of money rolling in..... and if you have a weed habit and have constant money coming in from comps, sponsers, etc.... alot of it will go to that considering you don't have alot of responsibilities other then bachelor costs, not like you have a family to support

In my opinion, if you don't want to drink, do drugs, and fuck, fine, don't. But why the fuck would you start a club about it? And why does it have to be associated with a certain taste in music? Maybe I don't know enough about it, but from what I do know, it seems kinda weird.

see here's my take on this whole issue that is evovling. I don't drink because my family has had some serious problems related to alcohol (divore, deaths). I don't do drugs because, to me, they're dumb and a waste of time. I'm going to wait 'til I'm married to have sex for purity (I expect the same from my future wife too). And also I don't think that people claiming sXe (straight edge) is something with younger people. I'm 21 and I know that a lot older than a lot of people on this site. I'm not claiming to be sXe, but I do feel it can be good. I ski for my escape. some people drink themselves stupid for their escape, some people smoke bowl after bowl for their escape, and some people have sex for their escape.....I don't need to that have an escape. so skiing is mine.

In Salt Lake ''Straight Edgers'' go around kicking the shit out of people who smoke or drink or do drugs. and when I say smoke i mean cigs. it is kinda like a little morman gang that dress up in punk clothing and have fun by starting fights. it is really lame. just fyi.

Peopel who are adreneline seekers are also addicts by nature. Listen to loveline once in a while and youll see. Im not straight edge, but I would seem like it to most people. Im like flatspinner, but I have alot in common with sXe peeps so I hang out with them.

haggard, you say you have a lot in common with them so you hang out with them, but like for me...

every single one of my friends, whether they are ski-related or not, like ALL of them drink or do drugs or whatever...that's totally cool with me, i still hang out with them.

it does, however, get hard. like, i guess it would be easier to hang out with people that are more like you. but i mean...i don't know what I'm getting at. ACtualyl, I do, but I don't want to type like 4 pages.

everybody has the abilitiy to make their own decisions, but we should all try and be understanding of other people's choices

just cuz they chose to do something we don't isnt any cause for us to be hating on them

i smoke weed on ocasion, and a couple of my friends who are ultra straight edge (mostly girls who wont even make out with a guy) hardly talk to me cuz they say they dont know me

so id say that in any person, not just celebrities, but even us kids and adults, that our choices will always piss somebody off

in our society, almost anybody who doesnt get their way is offended, hell, a teacher in my school was almost fired for mentioning Christmas break instead of 'winter break'

so do what you want, form your own standards to judge yourself on, but try not to hold others to your own morals

being strate edge isnt a part of skiing, if it were, there wouldnt be bars and ganjolas to take you to the top of the mountain.

and whoever said that most people only smoke because the pros do is obviously smokin crank, or they have never smoked while skiing. and also smoking while skiing gets you closer to your mind, unlike some other kid said.

 
Most of you are probably still in highschool, Im sure once you get older you will change. I just drink on occasion, which I really dont think is a big deal.

I got nothing against sex or partying, i just dont drink or do drugs. Doesn't mean i cant have fun. I think its cool that other people are the same way. As for pros I know JP Walker and Jeremy Jones and a ton of other snowboarders are b/c they're mormon. Most of the park city all-stars. Utah, you know.

And no, once i get out of high school i'm not going to change my mind so stop staring into your crystal ball, it doesn't work.

like people said already, it is so cool to let loose with friends after a good day. most of the time it is so spontaneous and super cool.

i think that straight edge can mean not just none of that stuff, but that you have the self control to let loose, but when you need to be focused, up super early the next day for a skiing shoot or a demo or so that you can put aside the party stuff and hit the hay.

drugs are definitely a big question. so many people don't really have a reason and they kind og dependent on it. you have to be so careful to not let them interfere with you life and this is extra hard because they affect your body in ways you cannot control. i know too many people who are too close to going down the wrong road because of drugs abuse to not have this opinion. on the other hand, i know lots of people who do drugs and they know how to control it so it's not a big problem. it's a question of control.

a lot of this can be governed by your experience with the law. if you've already got in trouble with the law, or had a super close call, you're much more careful in the future about this stuff.

i say party on with your friends and have a good time, but no one is making you.
