Storage waxing

i read somewhere that it is a good idea to put a hotwax on skis before you store them for the summer. it said you apply it like normal but dont scrape it off. is this true? and if so, how much should i put on, like the regular amount, or more? also, would this then be hard to remove in order to put a new coat of skiable wax on for next season when i use them?

thanks for the help

just dont even bother. like its good to have when in like august you get some crazy snow storm and have to get out there. but chances are that by the time your thinking about skiing, you will have time to wax them. the bases can survive a few months without a fresh wax. i know people often wax up, but if you dont the bases arent going to wear out. if you have time, go ahead, but you probablly will wax again before a big snow next season anyways.

pretty sick

yeah, i heard that the bases dry out or something like that. i just dont know if it will be bad on the bases if they dont have some wax on them.

The surface of the base will eventualy oxidize if you dont give them a wax, but it takes a while and if you get a preseason tune it doesnt really matter too much.

Its good for them if you are in a dry climate. Plus it helps to protect if youre moving them around. Its a good idea, plus you can just scrape em, and ride em whenever you wanna go.

just throw on some all temp wax, spread it heavily and dont scrape. It protects and keeps the base from drying out. Use this if your skis will be stored for longer than a month, and definitly use it if you are goinna be storing in a garage or dusty place.

I just put on a coat of cheap wax and dont scrap it off. Just cover everything up

Its really good idea to do it especailly if you live in dry hot Socal Like me. Have seen first hand what happens to a base of a ski that has "dried out". Think base deep cracks running from edge to edge about every inch from tip to tail. A customer at the shop i worked in left them and the things were "shedding" chunks of the base. I coat all my family's skis and boards before i put it away in storage now.

Ancient bumb, but if i recently just purchased some new skis would it be a good idea to give them a layer of wax cause i prob wont be skiing for a good 5-6 months. Or do new skis already have some kind of protecting coating?

New skis come pre waxed. It is really low quality wax and it'll wear off in 2days or so.
You'll be best to completely clean the bases of wax, using a wax remover spray or similar and then putting a higher quality wax on.
So strip old wax,
melt new wax on,
leave for half an hour,
remelt the wax for super absorbtion.
Then you are done for the Summer. In the fall before using them,
Clean the wax of dust,
then re melt,
leave for a half hour,
Scrape
and ski.

I would say beat to shit park ski's couldn't be bothered to have storage wax, although a nice ski should have off-season storage wax for reasons above, as well re-sale value is perceived to be a lot better if you say that you have storage wax on them. I good fast base, yea
