Well J.D you cant exactly set off your nukes recreationaly unless you own 2 million square acres. But if you owned that much land and nukes and knew how to set off a fission bomb (pretty damn simple) then yeah I would say go for it. Shit man I'd love to see a nuke in person.

Oh of course all the criminals will be able to get ahold of their automatic weapons. How the hell do you know? Are you a criminal? Have you ever bought something off of this ubiquitous 'black market?' Here's a simple example. Weed is illegal. Weed costs a lot of money for what it is; essentially a weed. Automatic weapons are illegal. Guns already cost a lot of money, but a black market uzi? That will cost you a lot. 'But the dedicated criminals will still get ahold of them even if they are illegal.' Yeah ok, but you know what we don't need? Your average nut/psycho/criminal armed with an automatic weapon instead of a handgun. We don't need to have that all so that a few people can have their fun. Can you live without an automatic weapon? If someone told me, 'If you ever drink mountain dew, someone is going to drop dead in the world. If you don't drink it, that person will live a long and happy life.' I wouldn't drink it for the rest of my life, even though I like it. Have some self-control, please. You need an automatic weapon just about as much as you needed an action figure when you were five.

And whoever said they could kill just as effectively with a bolt action rifle as with a machine gun, why doesn't our army just use bolt action rifles? They are much more accurate and cheaper to produce. Why do they use M-16s? What could the reason be?

Thats pretty bad. You know, gun violence would go down way more if the only legal firearms for civilians would be rifles. Hunting rifles for those who hunt. But come on, when was the last time someone actually 'protected themselves' with a gun when being robbed? Even just handguns off the street would make crime go down.

I'm sure that there are many gas station clerks that would disagree with you on your point of protection. And how would banning hand guns make crime go down, all it does is open up a new market for the black market. And for the post above that, my dealer has a mac-10 that he got for fronting weed along with an ak-47 and a 9 mil, I asked some more and he told me about the asians.

owning a nuke is ludacris. you cant do Anything with a nuke besides destroy shit. an automatic weapon however can be enjoyed. why not let a gun enthusiast buy an automatic weapon? gun enthusiasts do not kill people, so why do you not want them to own one?

 
Whens the last time someone protected them with a gun you ask? I dunno ask a cop not a buncha kids who arnt old enough to own one. My point about the bolt action rifle was My 'hunting rifle' has a much higher effective killing range than most machine guns. It is accurate and it would take a while to figure out where the shots were coming from. yeah you can go into a subway with a machinegun and kill 100's of people really fast but whens the last time that happened? The fact is making these guns illegal will start a process to rid the streets of these weapons and itll take hundreds of years to get every last one off the street if at all possible. There are million of machineguns out there and people arnt going ballistic killing each other with them on the streets of America so relax a bit.

as stated several times before, you can already purchase these weapons, so if you think about it, there is no true 'ban.' the only thing the ban limits is importation and manufacturing, as well as the capacity of magazines, and several types of stocks. Also, you need a class 3 license to purchase an assault weapon. these are fairly difficult to obtain so i doubt that serial killers, phsychos, etc. would be able to purchase semi-auto assault weapons legally. also, purchasing illegal weapons is as easy as getting weed, just a hell of a lot more expensive.

cant we focus on some real issues, like the fact that its so easy to get a drivers license in this country that a 10 year old can pass the tests?

I like the way you worded your initial commentary with phrases like 'back on the streets' as if these guns are sold in open air markets to anyone.

The fact is there are things called background checks performed before someone can just pick up a gun.

Since you are probably the kind of person who thinks terrorists buy their weapons at gun shows in the U.S. when they can buy them in their home countries (or have their children buy them) for a hell of a lot cheaper and without any security risks and only have a biased left wing media view of the NRA, and because my dad is a member and I have seen the magazine they put out I will inform you of what the NRA does that people like you don't even know about.

The NRA provides thousands and thousands of dollars to gun safety programs, hunter education programs, competitions and self defense classes. All of these of course promote safe, ethical uses of firearms.

Also, I will tell of what these guns you speak of are and who uses them or buys them. Anyone who is interested in the history of the Soviet Union can buy one of these as a physical piece of history that they can own. Most of these are also semi-automatic and NOT full auto like you say. People who buy these will be yes, a handful of rednecks, but also collectors, historians. They will be used in safe places such as gun clubs, ranges or private property where it is safe or not at all if a collector buys one. A criminal will be much more likely to use something small and easily concealed, not a large shoulder mounted weapon.

This ban also was made by anti-gun senators and the lot so it includes some weapons that are not 'assault'

This is why the NRA is working to keep it from being renewed.

So this 'heinous' and 'evil' association you speak of is actually trying to protect people's individual rights.

I have tried not to be too brash or say anything too offending in my commentary so as not to start a back and forth swearing match. If you will make a reply please try to make it as intelligent and informed as I have done for you.

The whole assualt rifle is good for little people's hunting is true. An AR-15 is semi-auto, meaning you have to pull the trigger once for every shot. They're also alot light than a .280, or a .308 which are widely used hunting rifles. An AR-15 wieghs around 8lbs with a full mag, while an empty .280 or .308 will weigh between 12 and 18 lbs, which gets really heavy after carrying them for a while (belive me, I've carried a fully loaded M-249 with 300 rounds over mountains spanning 18 miles, that alone weighed 30 lgbs, and a full pack, which is a normal thing in hunting, at around 60 lbs) I didn't know semi-auto rifles were illegal, I just thought exclusivley designed assult rifles were. H30 made a good point, I don't believe assualt rifles are the best thing to have around, but at the same time the people that are going to use them to kill will get them anyway...
