Stop autoplaying videos!

Dear fellow Newschoolers,

it bothers me that whenever I click on a video on the frontpage it begins to autoplay in a new tab.

I tend to open more than one edit at a time and I always open them in new tabs so I can watch all the edits I want and dont forget or miss a good edit. Plus I dont have to switch back and forth and go back to the frontpage, reload the frontpage and search for the next edit, picture, thread, whatever.

Usually my Internet is pretty fast and its not really that big of a deal to open every tab and just pause the video and then watch them in the order I want to.

But it would be way better if they did not autoplay! Right now I am away from home and my fast internet-connection for a few months and it always fucks up my computer when I open a few videos at once.

I can't be the only one who opens more than one video at a time in a new tab and then pauses it. Or am I?!

So my suggestion is to stop the autoplay and have the videos play when clicked on it. Similar to Vimeo. When I open a video on vimeo by following a link it does not autoplay. It begins to play when clicked on it and I really appreciate that.

So is this a good idea?

Any input from the mods?!

Videos on NS have autoplayed upon opening the video view page for as long as embedded video technology has been around. The idea is to watch the video as you click, then when finished go back to navigation.

YouTube does this too. I think the idea is to go for more of a TV type vibe.

Anyway, that is how its built and that is how we intend it to stay forever.

I personally like the autoplay! And would be annoyed if I had to click play EVERY single time. I think the main reason it works with Vimeo is because people are landing on the video and watching that one video and closing the tab. I think our player is more similar to Youtube in the respect that you can sit down and blow through edits with ease.

Maybe an option in your profile settings could be the solution? I have no idea how much time that would take to implement though.

plus the auto play works to your advantage because then your ad gets going immediately and you wait less long to watch your edit!

also props to you guys, the new player is $$$

Yeah Ive been kicking around NS around some time now aswell and it never really was an issue and I was sure it has always been this way. When I have a decent internet connection its no problem to just pause the vids and then watch them in the order I want to.

Its just my thing to open a few interesting edits/threads/gifs/etc. at once when I come to the frontpage so I dont have to go back and reload the frontpage every single time.

If I reload the frontpage the thumbnails will sometimes change positions and it actually it really annoys me just to reload it. So the only other option would be to leave the frontpage open and always just open one piece of content at a time in a new tab, close the tab and then go back. Meh...

An option to stop the autoplay would be really great.

I cant be the only one who opens more than one edit at a time so this would be cool.

Although I understand the "youtube-vibe" you want to have. Also its always been this way and Im all for "never change a running system".

For me watching edits is kind of a relaxation thing when I come home from university/work/or a trip and I can chill in front of my laptop and watch all the good edits of the day (or maybe of a few days or a week, depending on how long Ive been away from NS)

So I open all the content I want to watch in new tabs and for pictures and threads this is cool so I can check everything I want and maybe close it afterwards or comment on it. For videos its kind of annoying cause of the autoplay and right now my connection is fucking slow so I thought I'll bring up this topic.

Sometime would you be willing to take a video screen grab of how you use newschoolers and send it to me?

That is definitely not the intended usage, but we can look at how to blend in a better experience for how you're doing it.

Also consider trying NSTV. Its designed to be more of the 'lean back' experience like you're talking about.

Thanks for your answers guys. Maybe Im just a weirdo and the way I use NS is completely wrong. I think im getting old and maybe need to quit haha.

Obviously NS is not youtube as there are articles, news, threads, pictures, gifs, videos etc. on the frontpage and for me its a browsing habit for whenever I spy something interesting i just click on it with my mouse-wheel and it opens in another tab. That way I can keep browsing the page I found the interesting stuff on and switch to the content later.

Maybe its just me but thats a convenient way to open a few interesting (maybe related things) at once.

No, I do the same thing -- and actually appreciate the autoplay as it rolls the ads and loads up the videos so they're good to go when I'm ready to check them out. Just make sure you throw on mute, and you're golden!

Nice to know that Im not alone with this method.

I really appreciate the fact that it instantly loads videos WHEN I have a fast internet connection.

Right now my internet kind of sucks as Im away from my home-base for a few months and have to use the wifi the landlord allows me to use and its a slow connection thats for sure. So it would be better if the autoplay was disabled and the video would start loading and playing when clicked on it, similar to Vimeo.

Maybe there is already a browser plug-in that does exactly that but Im not sure.

If there is something like that please help a fellow skier out and link me to that thang!

Big shout-out to Bishop and Mousseau for the answers!
