STH2 13 Prerelease?

So here's the deal. I have 2 pairs of sth2 13s, love em, haven't had reason to complain... Until now.

Every time I land switch leaning forward, or really lean into a nose butter, I eject, or double eject. Checked my forward pressure, its fine, I'll check it again later...

I'm riding 9 in the heel and toe, 6'1", 150 lbs, aggressive skier, bsl 315, which puts me at a 8.5 from a din calculator. I put them up from 8, and I thought it helped, but I ejected twice leaning forward after that.

Here's the other weird thing; I have a pair of Attack 13s, and I can tripod, butter, whatever, and they're fine. They're only set at 7. I'm going to have to put up the Attack dins a bit anyway, cuz I can hit my ski sideways with my boot in it and I pop out like nothin, but still!

I don't get it, has anyone else had this sort of problem? Do my dins still need to be higher? Less elastic travel on the sths? I'm 95% sure my forward pressure is fine.

Help.

With the STH series bindings you also have to take into consideration the height and wing adjustments on the front of the binding.

I have been using the STH2 16s and before that STH16s. I swear by them.

BUT. for the first couple of weeks after using them i found the wings adjustment would loosen causing all kinds of bizarre pre releases..

Just check it every so often and eventually it settles down.. (after a month of riding mine stopped loosening)

TL;DR: Check all adjustments on the binding before cranking the din up

Mine have been rock solid too for a full season now. I went to a shop to have wings and height adjusted, but maybe i should check prior to the coming season.

How hard do i want to tighten the wings? Till they are very tight and then 1/4 spin back? I remember i read that somewhere...... :p

No. That's how you strip out the threads. They should be touching. Loosen them off so that they aren't touching either side, them tighten them until they touch your boot. That is all.

I was aware of the toe height adjustment, but haven't checked it in a while. I'll take a look, and update when I ski them next. Thanks guys, + k

And make sure the toes & heels of your boot are still within the DIN dimensions. If you walk a lot (or hike rails for example) you can wear down the toes and heels of your boot so that even if you set the binding up properly, you could still have release/retention issues. All shops have a simple tool to check this and will probably do it for free for you.

So I just checked them again, everything setup as it should be, forward pressure fine, my boots are practically new, no real damage on the soles, and they still released in a nose butter/landing forward when I tested it in my basement. Attacks in the same test, at an 8 din didn't release. This is starting to bother me... Any more input is appreciated.

Did you check the wings on the toe piece?

Ye overtightening them is definitely a bad idea, i would never do that to my babies, but i did indeed believe i had to tighten them a bit. So thanks for info!

Yep, tightened till they touch the side of the boot, wing height is fine, the piece of paper test is fine...

Sounds like it could be something in the heel.

If you can't figure it out take it in to a shop. See what they can do. If they can't fix it contact Salomon. Most places that offer STH2 also offer 5 year warranties with them.

Did you figure out what the problem was?

I have the same with mine, every time i get up my noses they release...

How do you know the forward pressure is set correctly? Sometimes the correct way is the opposite of how it should be done.

Very easy to tell forward pressure is set correctly on STH2's there is a screw on the heel piece that will sit flush or inline with the housing of the heel piece when it is set correctly. If the screw is not flush then forward pressure is not set correctly.

You're correct. Just making sure

Damn i just picked up some sth2 16s andcim worried now...

If they're good enough bindings for the Wells Brothers, Bobby Brown, Vincent Gagnier, Gus Kenworthy, etc then I'm sure they'll be good enough for you, just got to make sure you set them up properly.

Im not saying they are bad, im just not trying to worry about prereleasing

If you pre-release from any STH Driver toe binding it will be your fault. These bindings have been used in everything from park, pipe, freeride & world cup skis. I've owned / used them for years on most of my skis and they have been faultless in that time.

I know a handful of people who can't stay in the STH2 13/16 heel. They have no issues with the attack 13/16 or the griffon/jester, and i'm assuming wouldn't have an issue with the pivot.

Not sure what it is, but you definitely are not the only person who has this issue. Even landing fowards some people just prerelease from that heel.

most people have no issue with it though.
