any1 know anything about this just got back from the spac party becuase my little bro is racing and i talked to a lot of ppl there and they said it was the shit so any1 here on ns know anything about it?
 
bad idea. There's just too much talent at Stevens, and a freeride team would be too elitist. They couldn't possibly put everyone on it who deserved.

Stevens should just try to keep passes afforadable, keep giving college kids (and me!) a break on prices, keep making a dope ass park. And when its photo shoot time, don't go build some crazy jump for just "the team" to throwdown and film on. Instead, build some crazy jump for EVERYONE to throwdown and film on :-)

just keep a helicopter at the ready in case anyone needs to be airlifted (probably me)

Look at WHICH tricks the more experienced people are throwing (note that they aren't doing straight backflips and frontflips, because they are fucking easy and stupid)

Start with 180s, ridin switch, and sliding boxes, move on to 360s and rails.

Have a good season
 
Billy is an Aikido master and can redirect my attacks effortlessly. I know better than to even try. Fortunately his only offensive capability truly is his magic cards.

first of all take my karma i dont effing care and ur just a fucking dick o and by the way i wasent talking to racers i was talking to people with family members that do race. I actually talked to ppl that were on it and i know how to do all that stuff like how to slide rails and shit just thought i could use some practice and maybe coaches i thought it would b something fun to do. All i was doing was asking a simple question u dont have to come back and be a asshole.

Bro I just gave you the best advice that you're ever gonna get as far as skiing goes. You should be thanking me. I'd reccomend printing out this thread and keeping it in your jacket pocket while you're skiing.

If you follow my advice it will save you from years of being a nerd and not getting any chicks.

Just take Grant for example. He started listening to me about four years ago, and now he gets laid all the time! He didn't even have to sacrifice very many of his moral principles to do so!

Alright Foxy, in all seriousness, here's the truth.

I'm pretty sure that the "freeride team" that you're referring to is run by SPAC and is coached by some chick that has no business teaching people anything past how to do a 360. I could be completely wrong, they could have a qualified teacher now, but I doubt it. The truth is, there are very few people qualified to teach park skiing past basic jumps. The people running around this state offering to coach people have either never stomped a switch 7, they have a completely different background (aerials, moguls, racing etc..), or they can do some good tricks, but don't have the background in teaching and education to safely and effectively instruct people.

So if this "freeride team" is just a social group and they don't want to charge you any money, go for it. However, if you have to pay to join because there is "coaching" involved, tell them to fuck off, because you're way better off just skiing with your friends.
 
What a great thread. This is why I should spend more time in Regionals.

Freeride teams are a great way to work on the basics if you are new, but if you are already halfway decent the coaching the majority of the time will not be much help with your progression. Ski with people that are better than you, and when conditions are soft and your mental game is on, go for it.
 
if a stevens pass freeride team really happened it would be the gayest thing west of the mississippi
 
there's also the Adventure Ski Camp that will teach you to "rip sick phat lines"

the skiers coaching it are some of the nicest people ever. theyre the ones that put on the hoedown throwdown last year, which was probably one of the most legit comps held at stevens. some of you guys might be better than them but thats why you don't do it...its for kids that are trying to get better at park and might need coaching.
 
I gonna side with Kohl on this one. I think it's a great program. It will help develop the fundamentals of freestyle as well as educate people about proper ettique in the park. It will also generate more exposure for the park and it's programs thus allow more money to be budgeted for the park in future.

They are trying to organize a way for more peole to be excited about freestyle that is productive and generates revenue for the mountain. So why is that a bad thing? Who the fuck cares if they the coaches kill it anymore or not. If they can help build a more solid foundation for riders to apply to more technical tricks as thier skill improve while making sure they understand park safety then in my eyes they have succeeded.

 
I would agree if this program is meant for people that have zero experience in the park, but I don't think any programs that claim to coach people past doing some basic spins and grinds are worth the money yet. Again due to the lack of qualified teachers.

I agree that they don't have to kill it STILL, but they should have been able to do the stuff they are teaching AT SOME POINT. The old aerials guy, or the old moguls guy have no business teaching these newschool kids how to jump, because the styles are completely different. They think that jumping, is jumping, is jumping, but that's bullshit. A park jump is completely different from a moguls jumps, or aerials jump or a cliff.

My old trampoline coach couldn't figure out why I never wanted to ski with him.

The other extreme is these kids that just rip like all hell, but have never had an formal instruction or training on how to teach. (Windells coaches are a prime example of this)

The moral of the story is, if you're thinking about getting coaching for newschool, ask some questions. Find out what your potential coaches background is. What slopestyle comps have they skied in? What halfpipe comps have they skied in? Have you seen them ski before? Do they shred? What is their teaching background? Have they received training? PSIA certs? How long have they been teaching skiing in some form?

All of these questions should be answered before you give your money to someone and trust them with your safety.
