Stephen hawking into the universe.

Has anyone seen this show yet. its amazing. stephen hawking is a genus. watch it and talk about it.

i think hes right that theres no way to travel to the past but only to the future.

It is an excellent show, I was very interested in it last weekend. If anyone has taken physics, it is easier to understand how it is physically possible, but not rational. I completely understand how a person can travel into the "future" but I don't think it will ever happen. It is very fascinating.

i havent seen it but im sure it must be cool, maybe its online somewhere.

i watched his discovery channel special on the origins of everything last year and found it fascinating.

I feel like Stephen Hawking is running my head over continuously with his wheelchair throughout this show. It is a very interesting show, I highly recommend watching it. It's really not that hard to follow. The other show about the Universe is on right now and it's pretty damn good. Another really good show is "America" on the history channel.

i watched it last week and i thought that it was over simplified. this is probably just because i am an engineer and love/actually understand math and science and the show is aimed toward the average non scientificly minded person but i was disappointed with the lack of actual science in it.

learning about the speed of light is fascinating. i mean, when you look at the stars you're looking back in time, perceiving how the stars used to look depending on how many light years it takes for that light to travel to earth. Some of the stars you see, may very well not even exist anymore.

The same concept applies to when you look at yourself in the mirror. In essence, you're looking backwards in time to how you used to look. The .0000000000001 second in time it took for that light to reflect off the mirror back at you and for you to process that information

because it makes you smarter than discovery and history channel which greatly decreases the amount of TV you find entertaining?

I haven't watched the show (in the UK) but I don't think it would have worked if they'd included any maths.
The maths behind relativistic physics is some pretty hard core tensor calculus which would be well beyond most people. Anyway, even those who do use/understand tensor calculus (e.g. Engineers) only work with Euclidean geometry and assume things like space doesn't distort. This doesn't work for relativistic physics so even people who are familiar with tensor calculus wouldn't 'get' the maths involved. If they tried to make a TV show that actually explained non-Euclidean geometry and calculus a)I don't think anyone would watch, and b) It would have to be a fucking long TV show.

this is true. but i know quite a bit about relativistic/theoretical physics seeing as it is part of my degree. unfortunately, if they did make the show like that, i would be one of the 7 people who actually would watch it

If you want to learn about this sort of stuff then Stephen Hawking wrote a great book abut it called 'A brief History of time'. There's no actual maths in it but it explains the concepts and consequences of quantum and relativistic physics really well.
If you have a good understanding of geometry and calculus the the 'Feynman Lectures' might be worth a look. This book series manages to go through the theory (i.e the actual maths) AND be interesting.

already have and have been through the feynmen lectures as well as all of his non scientific books. hawkings stuff is too dumbed down for me. i do my learnin in the class room.

I watched it last night. Most of the stuff I had already heard but I have seriously watched almost ever episode of the universe, the elegant universe, carl sagans cosmos, and any other space show.

I watched it last night at 9 pm eastern time. It was one of the better shows on space I've seen. It's a lot like watching an episode of law and order, you only need to watch the first minute or so for you to be 100% sucked in.

gonna have to check this out, I'm a computer engineer but find physics way more interesting.
