Stephen Fry says Sochi Olympics should be banned

today the Huffington Post posted an open letter, written by Stephen Fry, to David Cameron and the members of the olympic committee, calling upon them to address the current discrimination against gay people in Russia.

the general point he makes is the olympics shouldn't go ahead (or they should be moved). here's the entire thing (if anything it's worth reading for how well he writes):

"Dear Prime Minister, M Rogge, Lord Coe and Members of the International Olympic Committee,

I write in the earnest hope that all those with a love of sport and

the Olympic spirit will consider the stain on the Five Rings that

occurred when the 1936 Berlin Olympics proceeded under the exultant

aegis of a tyrant who had passed into law, two years earlier, an act

which singled out for special persecution a minority whose only crime

was the accident of their birth. In his case he banned Jews from

academic tenure or public office, he made sure that the police turned a

blind eye to any beatings, thefts or humiliations afflicted on them, he

burned and banned books written by them. He claimed they "polluted" the

purity and tradition of what it was to be German, that they were a

threat to the state, to the children and the future of the Reich. He

blamed them simultaneously for the mutually exclusive crimes of

Communism and for the controlling of international capital and banks. He

blamed them for ruining the culture with their liberalism and

difference. The Olympic movement at that time paid precisely no

attention to this evil and proceeded with the notorious Berlin Olympiad,

which provided a stage for a gleeful Führer and only increased his

status at home and abroad. It gave him confidence. All historians are

agreed on that. What he did with that confidence we all know.

Putin is eerily repeating this insane crime, only this time against

LGBT Russians. Beatings, murders and humiliations are ignored by the

police. Any defence or sane discussion of homosexuality is against the

law. Any statement, for example, that Tchaikovsky was gay and that his

art and life reflects this sexuality and are an inspiration to other gay

artists would be punishable by imprisonment. It is simply not enough to

say that gay Olympians may or may not be safe in their village. The IOC

absolutely must take a firm stance on behalf of the shared humanity it

is supposed to represent against the barbaric, fascist law that Putin

has pushed through the Duma. Let us not forget that Olympic events used

not only to be athletic, they used to include cultural competitions. Let

us realise that in fact, sport is cultural. It does not exist in a

bubble outside society or politics. The idea that sport and politics

don't connect is worse than disingenuous, worse than stupid. It is

wickedly, wilfully wrong. Everyone knows politics interconnects with

everything for "politics" is simply the Greek for "to do with the

people".

An absolute ban on the Russian Winter Olympics of 2014 on Sochi is

simply essential. Stage them elsewhere in Utah, Lillyhammer, anywhere

you like. At all costs Putin cannot be seen to have the approval of the

civilised world.

He is making scapegoats of gay people, just as Hitler did Jews. He

cannot be allowed to get away with it. I know whereof I speak. I have

visited Russia, stood up to the political deputy who introduced the

first of these laws, in his city of St Petersburg. I looked into the

face of the man and, on camera, tried to reason with him, counter him,

make him understand what he was doing. All I saw reflected back at me

was what Hannah Arendt called, so memorably, "the banality of evil." A

stupid man, but like so many tyrants, one with an instinct of how to

exploit a disaffected people by finding scapegoats. Putin may not be

quite as oafish and stupid as Deputy Milanov but his instincts are the

same. He may claim that the "values" of Russia are not the "values" of

the West, but this is absolutely in opposition to Peter the Great's

philosophy, and against the hopes of millions of Russians, those not in

the grip of that toxic mix of shaven headed thuggery and bigoted

religion, those who are agonised by the rolling back of democracy and

the formation of a new autocracy in the motherland that has suffered so

much (and whose music, literature and drama, incidentally I love so

passionately).

I am gay. I am a Jew. My mother lost over a dozen of her family to

Hitler's anti-Semitism. Every time in Russia (and it is constantly) a

gay teenager is forced into suicide, a lesbian "correctively" raped, gay

men and women beaten to death by neo-Nazi thugs while the Russian

police stand idly by, the world is diminished and I for one, weep anew

at seeing history repeat itself.

"All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do

nothing," so wrote Edmund Burke. Are you, the men and women of the IOC

going to be those "good" who allow evil to triumph?

The Summer Olympics of 2012 were one of the most glorious moments of

my life and the life of my country. For there to be a Russian Winter

Olympics would stain the movement forever and wipe away any of that

glory. The Five Rings would finally be forever smeared, besmirched and

ruined in the eyes of the civilised world.

I am begging you to resist the pressures of pragmatism, of money, of

the oily cowardice of diplomats and to stand up resolutely and proudly

for humanity the world over, as your movement is pledged to do. Wave

your Olympic flag with pride as we gay men and women wave our Rainbow

flag with pride. Be brave enough to live up to the oaths and protocols

of your movement, which I remind you of verbatim below.

Rule four: Cooperate with the competent public or private

organisations and authorities in the endeavour to place sport at the

service of humanity and thereby to promote peace.

Rule six: Act against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic Movement.

Rule 15: Encourage and support initiatives blending sport with culture and education.

I especially appeal to you, Prime Minister, a man for whom I have the

utmost respect. As the leader of a party I have for almost all of my

life opposed and instinctively disliked, you showed a determined,

passionate and clearly honest commitment to LGBT rights and helped push

gay marriage through both houses of our parliament in the teeth of

vehement opposition from so many of your own side. For that I will

always admire you, whatever other differences may lie between us. In the

end I believe you know when a thing is wrong or right. Please act on

that instinct now.

Yours in desperate hope for humanity

Stephen Fry"

tl;dr Sochi olympics shouldnt go ahead due to the current goings-on in russia. as everyone knows the 1936 Berlin olympics went ahead despite what was happening in germany then, and that really shouldnt have happened, so it shouldnt happen again

what do you guys think? i personally agree with him 100%

if anyone's wondering who stephen fry is, google him. he's possibly the most british man in existence, and hilarious/ extremely clever

yeah no, this is not the worst issue that has happened to a country that was hosting the olympics before, and there will be worse things in the future.

this guy need to visit dacau and aushwitz before he makes this sort of comparison. the people of ruSsia dont like homosexuals. are they not entitled to their opinion?

this

also to the people that are going to say its a competition about equality yaddah yaddah.

no the olympics are a cool competition (huge waste of money, great way for city/ country to go bankrupt though) where the U.S. and the Chinese deak it out for athletic superiority, and Jamaicans run really fast.

okay that's true, however that wasn't going on before the olympics, that happened at the olympics. its not like people were sitting round months before thinking "yeah there's going to be a massacre in munich but whatever, lets just go ahead anyway"

Rush addressed this today. He said that the main reason behind this is that after the Soviet Union collapsed the birth rate plummited to below replacement levels and has relatively stayed that way. Putin has urged married couples to start having more kids to reverse the low birth rate. So it's mainly on an account of procreating since gay couples can't have kids. Another reason given by a woman political leader, forgot her name, is that gay marriage takes away the value of a marriage between a man and a woman.

So yeah sure it may come across as discriminatory but it makes sense to me.

there were some race issues before the incident happened.

also if you dont support the olympics this year, then dont watch it. If the olympians dont want to go, then give it to the next athlete in line who would do almost anything to go to the olympics, just stop bitching and moaning because some people just want to watch top athletes around the world do cool shit.

It boggles my mind that people don't remember that we gave the olympics to Nazi Germany that one time. And we would have given it to Imperial Japan in 1940 had it not been for the pesky outbreak of a little tiff known as the Second World War

it's still a completely different scenario but whatever.

also just because you don't agree doesn't mean the other side is bitching and moaning, i simply put this out there for discussion, not trying to say whats right or wrong either way

A huge letter about banning the olympics because of what you believe is immoral and unfair is pretty bitchy to me.

I can understand both sides of this case and it's taken me a bit to formulate an opinion.

On one side, it's not just the government of Russia, it's the people that wanted this law. It's not illegal to be gay, it's illegal to share the fact that you are in public, to minors, and to spread propaganda. I look at this as a step back for a country that is trying so hard to be seen as a forward thinking nation. It is hard for me to justify going as a volunteer when I feel like I'll be supporting them. Everything leading up to the winter olympics has been incredibly corrupt. Am I supporting this corruption by going? That's the challenge. Is banning the olympics or moving them a better option? Not necessarily.

First, think about cancelling this winter olympics entirely. Who gets hurt? The athletes. The people who have spent their entire lives working and training for this event. Preparing and striving to represent their country for 1 opportunity that they may never see again.

Next, think about the 20,000 or so volunteers in Russia that are absolutely working their ass off, training, learning to better their English, picking up skills to better improve their own lives. Many of these are students who aren't getting paid, but are doing it for the experience and so that when it comes to an actual career, they have a bit more of a head start. You're taking away an opportunity for 20,000 people that want to better their lives and be something greater than themselves.

Additionally, let's think about it. Unless russia is trying to start a war with most of the United Nations, the law likely isn't going to be enforced in Sochi through the span of the olympics/paraolympics. Russia wants to keep them too much and has spent too much money to not comply with that aspect. Sure there may be some talk and actions pointing otherwise, but the actuality of it is that it won't happen. Russia doesn't want THAT much negative publicity. Because of this, we can likely look at this as an opportunity for the world to show Russia that it's ok to be Gay. Certainly there could be a pin, or the outside nations could form something with a theme of human rights and be united via something with uniform or during the opening/closing or whatever. Perhaps someone does get beat up... the United Nations and whoever's embassy will have a hay day with it and it will be international news and only go to prove that sending hate messages is not the right way.

I don't think we should pressure them to change or cancel, I think we should be putting as much pressure on russia as possible and have them agree that NO ONE in Sochi or in route to Sochi will be punished for their beliefs or support of their beliefs from Mid Jan to end of March.

It is way too late to simply just "move" the olympics at this point... It takes years for cities to prepare and build the facilities that are needed to host the olympics. As for canceling the Olympics? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. The Olympics will carry on as scheduled and gays all over the world will grovel, oh well.

God damnit this is going to be the most fucking annoying Olympics ever. I'm going to pull a quote from Facebook or twitter or whatever the fuck from the future. "omg Russia's against gays, I thought the Olympics was equal, omg like BOYCOTT 2014 Olympics. Like if you agree!!"

No matter what my opinion is on the overall issue, this is what I foresee happening:

It's way too late to move them, and they won't be cancelled. I think a number of athletes will personally boycott it as well as maybe a few countries.

Saying, " I don't agree with homosexuality" is an opinion, which every person should be entitled to, because it's an opinion.

Beating, raping, killing, and imprisoning humans because of a genetic predisposition is outright inhumane and what should be outdated discrimination.

That's why there is pressure on Russia to change. Because the policies put in place by Russian parliament allow these people's opinions to be demonstrated through violent and inhumane ways, while the police stand by watching.

exactly. i don't know if anyone actually read the original letter but he compares it to germany 1936 when the exact same thing was happening to jewish people.

i also still fail to see how he's "bitching", because i'd say whats going on is immoral in anyone's view (well, it should be), not just his. he's not trying to ruin people's fun because of a couple of laws he disagrees, he's standing up for people's rights.

Let's look at the repercussions of cancelling these olympics for various peoples in accordance with what you just argued:

Volunteers: Won't get paid.

Volunteers who object the the law: can't figure out how to reconcile their participation, still get paid

CisHet athletes: Won't get to compete and will have to try again olympics.

Okay, cool.

Now, what happens to gay athletes?

Upwards of 10 years in prison if they are caught doing anything from saying they are gay to holding hands.

Aw man such a tradeoff. Okay, now I'm going to be you for a second. "Awww man i can't decide whether i should volunteer at this event that threatens to jail certain athletes for holding hands for up to 10 years because, I like, really like money n stuff oh mannnn what a crisissssss".

Have some fucking backbone and stand up for your brothers and sisters. Unless you really love money that much, then go fuck yourself. Your argument is so fucking self-centered it hurts.

A pretty big light shines on the location of

The Olympics. If the Olympics in Russia were boycotted, it would sure have some detrimental effects on Russia. People can have their opinions, but jail time? Get real. It's funny, a study measuring arousal found homophobes to be more sexually aroused while watching

Gay porn. Maybe Russia is a big ol gay country and just doesn't realize it

Of course they are entitled to their opinion. However, they are in no way entitled to jailing international tourists and athletes.

Opinions don't hurt people or infringe on their freedoms. Russian law does.

I agree with the article 100%

Oh yea most likely not. Good luck with that. Although it really would demonstrate moral fiber in humans on macro scale. However if it is at all possible to move the Olympics to a location in fairly already well suited and prepared position, I'd be all for it.

IOC should threaten a move unless Russia agrees to not enforce the law on Olympic grounds and within a certain radius to ensure international tourists and athletes won't be affected. Their revenue should be more important than their hatred and fear.

It's funny that people only care about gay rights in Russia when it's too late to even matter... initially when Russia was chosen you didn't hear a single thing about all this. "Yeah let's move the Olympics years after we gave it to Russia and after the billions they've spent to hold it!!!" That Fry dude is a fucking moron.

The day after the Olympics are over, everyone will move onto the next trendy social issue.

Maybe....but I do know Canadian athletes are looking at it seriously. I don't see why they couldn't move it back to Van city. This is a large platform, and has been used to voice sociopolitical issue before. In life you have to stand up for whats right, it might be hard....but sometimes it must be done. Also Sochi is going to be a shit show on the freestyle side of things. Fun times in throwing down in elephant snot.

Sochi was a horrible place to hold the games in the first place. It has the same climate as Nice in France and they don't even have enough snow. They have been trying to stockpile snow so they have just enough to get through the on snow events.

the fact of the matter is that russia is an ass-backwards country and putin gets off by doing things that get under the skin of the West and the UN (most recently granting snowden asylum). it's only a matter of time before the US balances our trade deficit w russia and pulls our FDI. russia is biting the hand that feeds them and before long they're gonna get smacked up.

What the fuck does this do for the kid who was beaten to hospitalization yesterday for being gay? How about the one who's pressured into suicide tomorrow? How about the woman who is, as Stephen terms it, "correctively raped" a month after the Olympics end and everyone goes home?

It amazes me that people can be so unbelievably selfish and shortsighted as to frame the issue as, "we just need assurances that this law won't affect us or our athletes, and then everything's cool and we'll all be fine". Fuck right off with that. The stakes aren't whether a tourist gets deported, the stakes are about the systemic oppression of an entire class of human beings. That is why the olympics should be cancelled or moved, because the prospect of the rest of the world injecting billions of dollars into a country that does these things, and will spend the money in part in continuing these abuses, cannot be tolerated.

Besides which, is it a significant undertaking and a massive inconvenience for everyone involved to have the olympics moved, and possibly delayed for a year, to hold it in a country that isn't legalizing and facilitating atrocities against homosexuals? You bet. Is it do-able? Of course it is.

As for your volunteers who are just oh so jazzed about this once in a lifetime experience to be a part of the olympic games, here's what I think. A few days ago, a gay teenage Russian boy was kidnapped by a group of men, blindfolded, beaten with a bat, painted, doused in urine, tortured with knives, and raped with a tube of insulation foam which was injected into his colon, ultimately killing him. On behalf of that boy, fuck you, fuck your wonderful winter olympic experience, and fuck anyone else who's willing to participate in anything that directly benefits Russia or its government.

Exactly. I don't understand why they chose Russia. Sochi seems to have pretty terrible winters from what I understand, as well. Last season they had to truck in all the snow.

Skiierman the point of trolling is something has to be believable, Stephen Fry is nothing less than a perfect human being, and I'm not exaggerating.

@OP, I'm quite surprised at what he's saying, he's not the kind of guy to come across as a complainer, whether I agree or not, I'm not sure. On one hand It's generally considered a bad view the russians have on LBGT, but it is their opinion, they're not forcing us to come to them, whoever nominated/voted it to be sochi should have foreseen this/be at fault.

This This THis This THis THis This.

Sephen fry is possibly the most intellectually well rounded person ever.

One does not simply get a scholarship to Cambridge University to do English Lit. and be a moron.

it's funny cuz ppl only notised abowt gay rytes in rushia wen te olympix hapen and a hole bunsh of pres mayks it a very popyoular controhvershial ishue.

Here's another thing I don't care about. People need to stop giving a fuck about countries they don't live in. The olympics are 2 weeks long. I think a gay athlete/tourist there can resist spreading gay "propaganda" for 2 weeks. Then they can go home, wave rainbow flags, shit glitter and never return to Russia. I'm all for gay rights in this country. Now Russia, I don't care about at all.
