So I am def a noob when it comes to stencil art but I am trying my hand at it. I searchbarred and read a few old threads on the topic and was just seeking advice on a few points.

-What is the best type of paint to use? (brand name or place to get it)

-What is the best material to use as the actual stencil? (thin cardboard, thick paper, any other ideas)

-How do you get the drip effect on a design after spraying it?

(do you just stand the shirt upright and it happens naturally?)

I think it is a rad artform, I noticed there are some kids on ns who are MAD legit at it. (like freezed)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

- donesn't matter on paint. i use what ever.

- use card stock paper.

for the drip effect, get really really close to what ever your painting.

the paint does matter. cheap spray paint is more "liquid-y", so it can seep under the edges of your stencil while you're spraying. you can get decent spray paint at your local hardware store though, look for rustoleum, or if you're really serious about it, buy some montana alien online, it comes in low pressure cans that are good for stencilling.

and try to avoid using paper to cut out of. use acetate, it's clear plastic, like the stuff they use on overhead projectors at schools. paper deteriorates and warps after spraying a few times, but the acetate doesnt. plus it's clear, so you can print out your design on a computer if you want, and tape the acetate over it and cut.http://www.dickblick.com/zz555/01/ you can buy acetate there.

skate deck and plywood, yeah. for shirts, i'm not really sure...they might make fabric-specific spray paint?
