I want to know if i need steel edging on the top edges of my box. im using 0.188 in. HDPE for the topsheet, will it get ruined by scissoring if i dont have some metal on the edge?

No, you dont need it. Parks use it because their boxes and rails get hit all day every day. A box without coping will work fine for a backyard setup.

i use HDPE and it chips on the side, but it still works fine, its just in the beginning that you chip a lot, then after a day or three of sliding the edges are broken down and it slides like a real box, no metal edges required....

rather than edges of metal have the wood come an eighth of an inch below the surface, then sand the edges to the wood (for an inch on each side)

this should eliminate creating chips in the first place

hope it helps

good luck
