Steamboat vs. whistler

I'm moving out west for a year with my buddies. It's hard to get a job in Whilstler. (or anywhere in canada) whats the best place in Colorado (we heard Steamboat was sick) or should make the haul out to whistler?

If you want a big place (big corporate style place), then how about Mammoth? Or Squaw? Or Alta/Snowbird? Colorado's snow isn't the best available. It's awesome for sure, just not the best in the continent...

summit county, jackson ,utah or mammoth

Go to whistler so much skiing + the town is so sick and really close to vancouver

***********************************

Its winter, the birds have all flown south, all but one. One little bird that waited too long. As it flew to catch it's buddies it got icicles on its wings and fell to the ground. The bird then saw a nice looking branch at the top of a nearby tree and it said to a nearby cow, 'I want to reach that top branch but I don’t have then energy to fly up, can you help?' The cow said, 'Here, eat some of my poop it'll fuel you to climb up the tree.' The little bird said, 'Thanks!' and had some of the cow poop. The bird flew up to the first branch of the tree and rested, then the next day flew to the next branch, until finally the bird reached the top branch. Then the farmer came out with a shotgun...

The moral of the story is, bullshit may get you to the top, but it wont keep you there.

steamboats cool. if ur parents want u to go to school u can go to www.coloradomountaincollege.com they have a residentail campus in steamboat. the skiings pretty good also.

Is this a joke? Whistler is way better that steamboat in every way. But yea like you siad Canuks don't like to give us americans jobs. But steamboat is definetly not the place to be. Go to Utah or come over to Tahoe with me.

I think rails in general are just a phase. - Anthony Boronowski

The boat is cool but you can ski so much more in summit county (vail, breck, copper, etc.) I heard jobs are pretty easy to get as well. As for whistler, the place is epic, but the weather can often be shitty.

Honestly i dont know if all you people are just ignorant or what. But honestly if you were moving out west why in the world would you EVER pick colorado. Nothing against colorado but it sucks... there are so many better places to move than colorado. Utah, wyoming, cali or the Pacific Northwest are ALL better than colorado yet kids still insist on moving to the shit hole that is colorado. I just dont get it.

well the allure of Colorado is multiple resorts in a small radius. I mean, Copper, Breck, Vail, A-Basin, Beaver, are all within an hour of each other. Not bad. But it is true, there are many equally good or better places.

'can you read what that says?'

'donna simma?'

'yes, that's right. now how would that appear in a phone book?'

'simma, donna?'

'that's right now Simma down na!

heres my analysis of steamboat.

its a nice mountain, good size, good snow (early to mid season, late season gets good snow but lower mountain starts melting first) if ur there with a local u'll have a killer time because they know exactly where to go OB and what runs and when to ski them.

the park is pretty fun. not many jumps but the locals are chill and the rails are alright as well.

ur best bet is to explore the mountain, preferably the upper mountain if ur new, but like i said before if ur with a local who knows the goods some good stuff is to be had mid to lower mountain.

After riding, kinda slow in steamboat unless ur a bar junkie then go hit up a local night spot. some good spots for food are right off of lincoln street (the main drag). el azteca taquira for some banging burritos. and johnny B goods for some killer burgers. theres some others but they're mostly local places so im not giving those up.

getting to steamboat is easy, just fly into the hayden airport and ur 20 minutes away. if u fly into Denver then ur about 3.5 hrs.

bottom line. steamboat is just like any other ski town. its what u make of it. if ur open minded and chill then u might score a local to ski with and show u the goods. if u have some initiative u might walk the town and find some sweet spots. Its a killer mountain with a nice town below it. if u ever have the chance go to steamboat, GO!, u wont regret it.

yeah you really can't compare steamboat to whistler. steamboat doesn't exactly have an excess of challenging terrain. they do get awesome snow and the crowds are usually non-existant, but that's probably the only department it beats whistler in

but definitely don't come to jackson, it blows! really hard.

Yeah steamboat is a typical colorado resort. No matter what greg or anyone else says its flat and gets minimal snow. Who cares if you have 8 resorts all within half an hour on I-70 when they all fucking blow. I would rather take one alta, jackson, or whistler then 50 I-70 resorts. I mean they are good mountains to ski at but if you want to get good and rip some steep lines then you need to go elsewhere other than colorado.

yup you guys are right. colorado sucks. there isn't a single good mountain and never in the history of skiing has a single decent skier came from colorado. they should just tear down all the chairlifts and clearcut all the trees and do away with those pitiful colorado mountains. no mountains in colorado have any vertical, and you're lucky to even find a terrain park, let alone a decent one. and it never snows in colorado either.

i hate you dspin7x....

on the other hand i think you should move to summit county. good parks all around you

alright, i lived in steamboat last year and rode the I-70 resorts for most of my life. what ever is saying is pretty damn true. colorados mountains suck, steamboat got me a taste of what good skiing was, but that was because we had a snow mobil and we knew our way outa bounds, in bounds is a whole new world. the patrollers are all stuck in the 80's, in fact the people who own the resort have no idea what's going on.

cons of steamboat:

- patrollers will bust you for anything (skiing switch, fast, spinning on trails, doing butters all the way do the shitty groomers)

- They put forth no effort on their park (it's run by 2 19 year old snowboarders and a cat driver, all of which have no idea how to build shit.)

- the rails are all ride on, no gaps on. (better learn how to hockey slide on)

- the town is aimed more towards 21-30 year olds

- in the park you'll find plenty of gaypers, and even ski school clogging the pipe, rails, and landings of jumps.

- the biggest jump is probably 20 feet.

- the previously mentioned restruants suck. (Azteca especially, who serves a cold burrito?)

- there are not too many hot ladies up there

- you're stuck in steamboat unless you wanna drive 1 1/2 hours to summit county, or 3 hours to denver for a hip hop show or something.

- skiing in their snow, you have tons of chances to get hurt in expectedly. (tree branch snags your leg, rock or sharpe branch where you're landing off cliffs)

pros:

- if you're decent at skiing, you'll look awesome here.

- amazing ammount of snow

- super arrid powder, it jsut moves around you.

- lots of chill GUYS, not too many girls (con)

- sweet terrain in the b.c.

- alta isn't too far away.

steamboat is by far the best mtn ever, champagne powder, yes the pipe is lacking but the atmosphere and attitude of the folks there makes up for everything else. you get some snobby assholes over by rolex on the right side of the mtn but ive met so many awesome ppl in the park and gondola at steamboat. i would choose steamboat over whistler, vail, mammoth and any other resort any day of the week
