Stay Safe Out There

If you climb in the Northeast you know about Rumney in New Hampshire. Some of the best sport climbing in the region with some great climbs. Today I was guiding for work and a girl about a 1000 ft. away from my group was struck by a falling tree. She wasn't climbing, just hanging out and watching a friend.

I heard something come crashing down the wall and thought to myself "wow that sounded like a big tree, hope everyone's all right" and went back to teaching belaying with my group. A minute later a guy was running down the edge of the wall yelling if anyone had any medical knowledge. I ran back with him to find a girl completely crushed by a massive tree. Her legs were clearly broken, her face mangled and she was coughing and most likely choking on her own blood from internal injuries. We stabilized her and called EMT's who then immediately called in a heli for her. We BEAM'd her to a nearby field where the heli landed and picked her up.

It's been on my mind all day and needed to get it out. This is the first big accident I've been on and it just made me think about everything we do and the risks we take. Even if your not on the wall climbing, or dropping into a 50ft. table, accidents can still happen.

So to everyone, don't take stuff for granted. Take it easy and please be safe.

++++vibes for this girl too. I'm trying to find out how she is, but can't help but think she's not doing too hot. Let's hope she got taken care of.

If she is coughing up blood I doubt she would be doing all that well, depending on the internal injury and how fast the response time was I say she has a slim chance. Although I would not be surprised if she survived. People have lived through worse.

++ vibes to you and her
I had someone watching over me and my 3 friends when my buddy lost control of his car last night at 120km/h, flipped twice and we ended up upside down in a ditch, out of some kind of miracle 3 of us walked away without a trace of blood, and the driver got 2 stitches on his elbow. WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT, I wouldn't be here without it!

Woah, that pretty nasty, sounds like you handle the situation like a pro. Well done man.
+ Vibes to you and the girl.

A good friend of mine was with the group with the injured girl. From what I've been told, she's pretty broken but will live through it. Broken legs, back, skull. Thanks to anyone who helped, my friend was really impressed with the way everyone responded.

I had a similar incident last summer camping in Colorado. We were all sitting around the campfire at dusk when I heard a cracking sound and noticed a huge tree starting to lean towards me. I yelled for everyone to run but two people who were sitting with their back to the tree ran down the length of it and we hit. Luckily, the tree landed on two large rocks and didn't crush my friends like it sounds like happened to your friend, but between the two of them they had 2 broken backs, 2 broken legs 1 broken neck, and several other more minor injuries, everyone is fully recovered now. Scariest night of my life. I was pretty much the only one there who didn't freeze up and within a few minutes we had help from a few EMTs camping nearby. Weather was too bad to bring a heli in so we had to wait well over an hour for an ambulance. Hope everything works out ok for your friend like it did for mine.
