so, whatd everyone think of the speech tonight?? i thought that a lot of it was the same thing that he has said time after time again...bush needs to get some new ideas and stop trying to force the world into democracy...it is not needed in order for a country to succeed...he did have some strong points though like restating how well his no child behind act worked...but whatever, hopefully this was his last address...leave your thoughts on the speech

I posted this in the other thread:

I saw some would be contradictions in some of the ideas proposed. He was talking about the No Child Left Behind Act. He followed that with talking about setting higher standards for schools. So what the hell happens when you have kids who can't meet the standards? Just because you focus on these kids more supposedly doesn't mean they'll be able to meet new high standards. And plans to send private sector teachers to teach part time in the public schools. I can never see that happening. He proceeded to talk about drug testing working in school. But when you test positive for drugs at school... you usually get some form of expulsion or suspension possibly and then you get rehab. This is also a distraction from school time. I don't necessarily have a solution, and I'm pretty much a moderate conservative, but these plans just sound very idealistic.

I didn't know if I agreed with his plans on prisoner release program. So we have to spend more money to house prisoners half way while they get job training. Why can't we give them job training while they are in prison and try to cut some of those tax dollars and time in half? Are there statistics that show that these programs bear a high enough success rate that the money spent on this program would not be in a net excess, if the percentage of prisoners going back to prison were too high?

I know the state of the union speech is very general, but I was struggling with some things.

concerning the no child left behing and raising expectations, in our public schools we pass kids no matter their ability automatcially into the next grade, erego you have kids in 10th grade who cant fucking read, by the same token many schools do not offer advance courses so in the same class with the kid who cant read you have a kid with a 160 iq thats what hes getting at

^ Yea I understand that much. I remember in my locak area growing up in highschool that citizens in very middle class areas simply did not want to pass tax levys for school. Regardless of the percentage school funding has gone up. The money to cater to the minority of students (very intelligent, and those lacking standard intelligence) is highly limited. To overcome that also requires citizens of communities to want to pass tax levys for their local school districts.

The paradox of simply passing kids along like you said who can't read, is that you have to find a way to deal with the discouragement of these kids being held back. You could run into horrendous class in certain school districts holding kids back on new raised standards.

i felt that the two best parts of the speech were when the camera panned to sen. kennedy (D-MA) shaking his head in disbelief of what the prez was saying and then when bush was saying '...and soon some of the key elements of the patriot act will expire...' he was expecting to just continue with the speech, but he was cut off when some certain democrats started applauding because they know the truth that the country and government should be focusing on getting rid of all the problems on the homeland and no waisting our money arresting criminals in other countrys that are in no way an immediate threat to the US
