State of the Union 2011

Yep. Obviously he will try to appeal to both sides to help in the upcoming election. I can't believe they're mixing the parties together. What a fucking stupid idea.

well if you take a look around, 1000 posts is really NBD, took me like a year, but whatevz, its about as big of a deal as my speeding ticket today :(

I hope by "invest" he means grants and shit and not subsidies. I mean I am all for removing subsidies for oil companies, but I am not down with simple removing said subsidies only to subsidize a different industry.

I am also enjoying the emphasis on science and education, I just hope they put darwin in the history books and put punctuated equilibrium into the curriculum. That would be a nice start.

In his speeches its always _____ will change and i will fix _____ and speech after speech things will be changed....but shit never gets done

>implying this doesn't happen with every president.

>implying the system isn't fundamentally flawed in a number of ways.

Ok im not too good with politics and economics but he talks about how we need to catch up by improving roads, the high speed trains for 80% of america, and investing in alternate energy. But then he says that the gov. should make budget cuts and how they need to stay within in their means.

More pandering, empty promises, and placing of blame where it doesn't belong just like every other corrupt politician does. Nothing new.

"Want to know why democracy fails? Talk to the average voter for 5 minutes"

-Winston Churchill

Seriously, most voters and public have the attention span and short term memory capabilities of a fucking goldfish

In reality, the Address didn't mean much but the same old story. They are going to cut a tiny bit, and then spend a whole lot more. The fundamental problems are not being tackled. The economics are wrong. We have a very destructive central bank. We have a rapidly growing police state. The People are no longer sovereign. The Fed is making an announcement tomorrow, that will be more important than tonite.

The dollar has lost so much value. The Fed is still keeping interest rates too low, and encouraging malinvestment. Interest rates need to go up on housing loans, drive the values of homes down to where they would be in an unfucked with market. Then buyers will need less for a down payment, instead of them just jacking up the percentage (to 30%, where the banks want them right now, but federal law won't allow them). Also insurance and taxes would drop. If The Fed didn't fuck with the housing market to begin with, and inflate all the values, we wouldn't need to hear dumb motherfuckers cry about how much they're loosing. Tough shit, life isn't fair.

If The Fed announces QE3, we're fucked. Foreign markets will get scared about inflation and their holdings loosing value. The idea that "stimulating" the economy is ass backwards. Especially when they do it with printed money. Our founding fathers warned us about shit like this. American fiat currency has been created and self destructed before. That's why it's in the fucking Constitution. Congress broke the law in 1913 with The Federal Reserve Act, creating The Fed.Thomas Jefferson would have smashed some fucking skulls in for that move. If our brilliant leaders keep on this path, The People will get fucked very hard. Then there will be 2 choices. 1. We go back to our roots, a republic with rule of law, or 2. A totalitarian police state.

"While I may not agree with what you have to say, I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

Is a popularity contest*. You think a lot of Obama's voters voted for him because they thought he truly was the best candidate and had the best ideals?

I liked the first part, I think America definitely needs to step up it's education system. Just hope they actually do something about it...

i was at a friend's how last night, and their drunken canadian republican room mate watching the speech bitching about obama was one of the most painful things i've had to endure while trying to play risk

What they really need to do is stop paying interest on reserves. By giving banks incentives to pile up cash nothing is circulated and the economy remains stagnant/slow growth. They are trying to pump money into the economy which doesn't fucking work when banks have an incentive to keep it rather than make loans. Also, the biggest problem is actually the 'too big to fail' mentality. Granted, I believe it was needed in 4th quarter 08, its going to be a huge problem in the future as huge corporations have the incentive to make riskier and riskier decisions.

+k beanpic...America prides itself on a free market, but in reality, the government accounts for over 20% of our GDP. Since the end of World War II the economy has been entirely dependent on government spending, and that is sad, we need to ween the market off of that.

I fucking hate Obama more and more every day. Sure, the guy can give cool speeches, but all this talk about "change" and "hope" is straight bullshit. People act like he's the fucking second coming of Jesus christ.

If I were him, I'd take a page out of

Fucking NS. I spent like 5 minutes typing a nice rant and it cuts it off.

Sparknotes. The government is too big and tries to do way too much, and it fucking sucks and does not work.

Bingo, a lot of which comes from defense. I've noticed a nice decline in the value of defense equities which is a signal that we've 'actually' begun the process of trying to find a more peaceful cash cow for our economy.

Panda, great fucking quote. And good post by quietoneskill not too far after that one.

I was doing Calc. hw at my friends while the speech was on and I only caught a tiny bit but it seemed so blatantly a push for public support to get re-elected. A 5 year freeze on domestic spending I think he said doesn't accomplish much when there's severe fundamental problems in the country. I'm not gonna get too far into into because some of you already have done a good job at that. I do remember Obama saying how obvious it was that you can't keep spending more than you take in, well no shit. So why try to shove an absurd universal health care plan for almost 320 million people when we already have one the very best health care systems in the world. no system is perfect or ever will be, people just need to be smarter with their actions and not do things like smoke 4 packs a week for years and then wonder why the government isn't paying for your health care. it's a free country but nothing comes free.

Also it may have been from his recent speech in Wisconsin? that he was about how great our liberties are etc. when it seems it's been the exact opposite has been happening for years even before Obama. Personally I want an end to Obamacare, the Patriot Act, and tobacco/alcohol/oil subsidies.

are you fucking kidding? or are you that stupid.

A. It's not a universal plan by any stretch of the imagination.

B. If you call 37th in the world one of the very best, then call me Jack Sparrow and fuck me in the ass with a peg leg.

A. Stretch your imagination out then, in the 2000 some odd pages of the

bill there are some good points that benefit me and lots of other

people but it's a bad law no matter how you spin it imo.

B. I can work the google on the internet-machine too, first link I found was obviously the one you got 37th from. There's all sorts of factors that go into those ratings. 37 doesn't sound that bad at all considering the amount of people we have and the other things we spend money on being a world power. France being rated as the best health care system, has a much smaller country where it's population is like 1/6 of ours and is also far more socialist than the US makes it much easier to field a better health care system. We have over 310 million people in our country that have access to excellent health care, it's not my fault that some idiot crashes his motorcycle when he has no insurance and ends up with thousands in medical bills. We have a vast majority of the best hospitals in the world, about 70 of the top 100 and you can google that fairly easily. We have excellent quality of care and there's no need for you to bend over Jack, but if that's your thing I'm sure you're local hospital can sew that butthole up tight, it's just gonna cost you.

Does the bill provide free healthcare for all Americans? no, therefore it is not universal.

I'm not saying it's a good law, I'm saying your statement was incorrect.

After sifting through what appeared to be the ramblings of a 13 year old who just got a lecture from his father I have come to these conclusions...

"37th doesn't sound all that bad" I thought we were one of the best?

You did not say we were one of the best considering the circumstances, just one of the best. Stop backpedaling, it makes you look foolish.

How is it easier to create a better healthcare system because your DEMOCRATIC nation is "more socialist"?

Yeah, everyone in America has access to healthcare... owait, I think you're forgetting the 45 million uninsured.

You're being a little bit unrealistic here.

And believe it or not public elections come down to who can be more popular with the casual non-political following people.

criticize all you want people..bitch and moan .at this point i don't care who the president is or what he says..shit's been off the deep end since we decided to go to the middle east..it's not obamas fault and i doubt he will resolve it..nor will the next president IMO..it's going to take at least a decade of positive movement to achieve a solid economic standing again if we can ever get out of this funk
