Starting to slide boxes

hey, so i'm trying to start grinding some wide boxes and I am having trouble keeping ny weight even. my front ski slides along on its edge and it gets messy from there. also i'm not on twin tips so my bindings are mounted pretty far back from center so if there are any tips that can help me keep the rail under my boots that would be great!

i'm new to newschoolers and the park scene so hey everyone and hope to get talking :P

It shouldn't really matter if your bindings are center mounted or not. Especially on a box. Just keep looking at the end of the box and try to land both feet at the same time.

watch some vids and pay attention to how they jump on to boxes, have their weight, form etc. But ya it wouldent matter were your bindings are. oh and when you are coming up to a new park feature, just no you can do it. dominate the feature, dont get dominated!

^ i'll have to check out some vids like you said. but yeah didn't know about the bindings because everyone I see in the park has twin tips w/ center mounted bindings. working on it but no cash for now :(

It'll be a weird sensation at first. You really have to keep a lot of weight forward on that front foot. Start small, get comfy, and yeah, focus on the end of the box.

I for some reason always went switch out of boxes and rails, it felt more normal and less like I had to fight the rotation or something. Give it a shot if you think that would make it smoother, it did for me.

I agree. I usually come out switch too, feels more natural. Like they say, lean forward. I started out leaning back cause if i was gonna fall i wanted to his my ass instead of my face. DONT DO IT. You will slide out every time and have some nasty bruises. I learned the hard way and now I lean forward with much better success.

It is a cool feeling. I suppose you have tried front sliding boxes already, sliding them like a rail is actually much easier, its just spinning and then centering your weight right that takes a little practice. At first try just riding onto the box and then turn sideways like your about to stop, you'll get it. And like he said before, landing switch when you get off is easier too.

i think it has to do a lot with keeping your concentration on the end of it, because depending on where you head is , you will turn. ^^ I agree learn on rails going sideways, i had tryed it on boxes and it wasn't happening so i learned on really really small rails and took that to boxes and progressed from there

Hit the box straight on or else you'll fall off (or just come off) the side of it halfway though.

What you should do is go out in your lawn, or basement or wherever with your skis on and step on some sort of object (a skate rail works great) and get in an athletic stance with your feet wide and practice balancing on it as if you were sliding across it.

And if you have snow and a backyard or front lawn, I would try and make a rail out of something pvc and wood, or just something lying around the house and practice sliding a low rail at home.

After you practice a bit you'll get the balance and then you'll be golden.

progress to higher and higher, longer and longer, narrow and narrower features.

It's all about being relaxed and confident. I find that when I do my best on rails/tricks or whatever I'm doing, I'm relaxed and I'm confident that I can do it. Once you grease that bitch your confidence will boost way up and you will be ready for new things.

Come in, low, with a wide stance.

Pop, and turn 90, but make sure you are still looking at the end of the box. Try to keep your downhill hand by your hip/asscheek, this will help keep enough weight forward.

okay

1. ski toward the box and have your feet line up with each side of the box have a wide stance not narrow

2. jump up, DON'T try to go on then turn

3. do a full 90 don't half commit but still be looking at the end of the box

4. continue to look to the end and you should slide it just fine.

yeah and having not center mounted skis should be okay as long as you make sure you keep your feet in the center of the box.

ya i always slide off the left side of the box before i make it to the end...

also i normally spin to the right but get on boxes i spin the 90 to the left (for some reason i grind with my right foot leading). could it be that im turning a little bit before i jump? cause im pretty sure im focusing on the end of the box

just make sure your focused on the end of the box, thats the key thing for me...and you want to make sure you going on fairly straigt on ...and pop up and do your 90

no cash is the problem. if anyone has some spares hanging around I could get off them w/ bindings for around $100 that would be cool

Just put as much weight on your front foot as possible, feels weird at first, I used to put weight on my back foot and land on my ass everytime, and if you ever half commit, your weights on your back foot and you fall.

Ahahaha my Dad's SP and has been riding alpine for decades... a couple seasons ago he entered the park with me, I did the first small 4 ft. box and look for my Dad...I find him sliding the box until he gets to the last 6 inches of the rail and falls...Atomic Xscream skis aren't to good for park...
