starting to ski

hey,

Im a snowboarder and this coming season ive decided to learn to ski because it seems like all the skiers i know have alot mroe fun and do alot less bitchin. But all the skiers i know started when they were like 2 or 3 so my question is. Is there anyone out there that learned within the last couple years and is it possible to get up to the level of ur bros in a couple years.

later

greg

I think so. If you had a high level in SB I think you could use that experience, (i.e. balance, knowledge) to use in skiing. It all depends on how hard you push yourself to get caught up. Id start out with a lesson and get on the right track, and then see if they have freeski (rails, park and pipe) lessons for later on.

word...im happy to see you have crossed back from the darkside. however, before allowing you to enter into your brotherhood, you must prove your love for skiing, by doing a vid of your burning your old board and boots.

the elders have spoken.

i dont know how it is when you switch from sb to skiing. But switching from skiing to sb is not a problem. I know some guys that are throwing backs and 5 on sb just one season after they switched. SO its maybe not a big difference. But i think that skiing is alot harder than sb. just the basics, not park or jibbing stuff.

I started like 5 years ago and it's all about getting out every free second that you have . And if your friends are nice they will help you .PS: we need the video fo you burning your old SB equipment ...thanks!

Dude you'll be fine. Just make you you learn to ski the entire mountain before you learn to ski park.

like west said, dont start out with park first, lean to carve well and ski black

i was going to go for a quad daffy but i was like, why huck? -mommy

I've only been skiing seriously for 2 years, and I'm up to par with most of my ski buddies. I have skied all my life, so I've always known the basics, but it was probably 10 days per season at the very most until my freshmen year of hs.

chris turpin started in 1999 if im not mistaken...but he did have 400 days on snow in his first 2 seasons.

yea once you get past the edging to carving difficultys it will be easy for u. I had trouble with that when i started wakeboarding last year but u quickly get over it.

I did the same thing aas you. I snowboarded from like 4th grade til my freshman year. Then I saw Ski Movie and switched to skiing my Sophmore year. Like everyone said, learn to actually ski first. Don't just go straight to the park.

My friend also did the same thing as you and picked it up in no time. Keep your snowboard for early and late season though, snowboards are more fun when its shitty out.

I did that, and it was a matter of learning to ski within a day or so, or skiing alone. I don't really like skiing alone so I learned real fast.

you could get back pretty quick i think, i've seen skiers switch to snowboarding and takeoff within 2 years or so...probably works both ways

It is defentently possible. I know a kid that moved here from Alabama, and at the start of the year could hardly ski down the bunnie hill, and by the end, he was throwing 7's. Its all about who you ski with. If you just go ski by yourself, it will take a while for you to progress. But if you go ski with friends, they will push you, and you will learn fast.

This next season will be my 4th, and I'm sure if you skied a lot, you could get real good. I've only skied 17 days in my life, and I can ski almost everyhitng. Not taking a lesson your first time isn't that bad(Ididn't take one), but you really should, they end up helping a lot.

thanks for all the replies. I have another question also. Should i rent my first year?? Or pay for half and have christmas be the other half and buy some ski's??? My friend said i should and get twin tips when i do since i want to get into park as soon as i can shred the hill fairly well. also, the ski's rented at where i ride are pretty shade. But they are alot better then the snowboards there

if u really want to catch up to ur friends u should try to go skiing 2ce as much as them but only tell them u went like 3 times

ya, its possible to learn fast, but not for everyone. Also, LEARN HOW TO TURN FIRST, my friend got twin tips this season, but he wasnt too great with the whole turning thing, he cant ski the rest of the mountain worth a damn, he just skiped straight to park, but cant hit big jumps cause he cant go fast enough to clear em. Also, going to park too fast without knowing how to get down the mountain leads to terrible flailing style.

yah...what's his face from red deer....turpin, he used to be the type who would snow plow off the lift...point it to the jump, stomp something sick...then snowplow back to the lift...That was years ago though...i'm sure his killin it everywhere now.

Don't think just jump.

o definitely you could do it. i know people that never skied a day in their life before just a year ago and now they're some of the craziest park skiers i know.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of

arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly

proclaiming...'Wow! What a ride!'

forget buying skis for your first season, unless you are 150% sure that you are going to take up the sport. you SHOULD buy some boots though. you can get away with rental skis for the first season, just make sure to pay the insurance on the gear if you are thinking of trying rails or jumps. if not, the shop will screw you when you return them. but boots are a DEFINATE must.

Last season (03-04) I decided to sell my snowboard and start skiing after almost 5 years of boarding. At first i thought the transition would be hard but now here I am, 6 months later and i can throw 3's, 5's with grabs, slide s-rails, and carve fakie. skiing is mad fun trust me.
