Starting out

Heya-

I've been skiing pretty much my whole life, but I really want to get started in more freestyle stuff. The only issue is I've gotten hurt a lot (not just skiing though) so I'm a teensy bit scared-any tips?

Just don't picture any bad things happening, I prefer not thinking at all and just going for it, just do one vision of doing what your doing, you land than go for it. Don't wait to long or you'll psyche yourself out. ALWAYS commit, or your going to crash

i dont think that is much help; but yeah what he said above.... commit completely and just dont picture anything bad happening, and if you need help getting pumped up listening to loud music that you like always helps

Sounds gay, but seriously invest in some hip pads.. oh and wear a helmet. Just start out with small stuff.. hike it till you have it down. Be confident. Keep your knees bent and hands down.. and like its been said, commit.

good luck.

being confident is extremely important..if you think you can do it, youll be much closer than thinking you cant

Start small, builld up your confidence, get the basics dialled and move on from there.

If you're really nervous maybe get some pads/armour.

No, I'm 99% sure I'm right on that point. The rest of it is 100% though. Technically, you're supposed to not lean back but it's almost impossible to not lean back even the slightest bit without tip diving in any sort of regular deep powder.

But yeah, all the trick tips and the backcountry stuff is good I believe. So do most of the other people on NS.

like everyone is saying, commit to whatever trick you are doing, im just starting riding pak this year and thats one thing that i have learned thats really important

Like they've mentioned - COMMIT - one of my biggest issues... but whenever I do commit i don't get hurt.

Haha... for rails, one thing I did with my students was have them look to and point at the end of the rail, or down the hill - to get their weight more on the downhill ski (people tend to lean uphill when sliding rails for the first time, and too much = fall).

Start small, take it easy, and have fun.

Then again, I haven't been doing much park at all lately because I break myself really easily. Haha... so don't be like me! It's mostly because of my back though... so I guess that's pretty serious...? Whatever. I taught all last season with a broken wrist and hyperextended shoulder! You can do this! =P

Fuck I hope I don't scare you away?

FC? Born and raised? Or going to school up there? Either way that sucks for skiing. When I was up there at CSU my days were minimal. So that will also help your skills... moving closer to the mtns.. so you can go more often.

Oh.. and theres always Ruby Hill in Denver if you wanna just put in some time on easy rails.

but didnt you figure out what real powder is like? ORGASMIC...

And what everyone else has said, commit and think happy thoughts...pot helps with the courage for me.

i break pretty easy....just usually its my head.

i dont mind im pretty used to it now.

thanks for the tip...i know the first thing i would do is lean upward trying to keep my balance

dude, people could argue about technique for hours (ever seen epicski.com? not hating but they tend to argue technique a lot- very different from NS and TGR) the info he wrote in there is likely fine for you. if you want to get into the specifics check out the aforementioned site. it could be really really boring, but there's some useful info I'm sure.
