Starting lacrosse

So I'm a junior in highschool and just a couple days ago, my baseball coach cut me for no reason from the team. I want to do something this spring so I decided to start lacrosse. I was just wondering how difficult it is to pick up. It's no cut so I'll be on JV but that's fine. Is it super difficult to learn or no?

get someone who knows what they're doing on your varsity team to string your stick and then go find a concrete wall near your house and spend like 30 minutes a day before you go to practice on it. unless you go to a boarding school in maryland, doing that might get you a chance to be on varsity by the end of the season

if you go to highschool in the northeast, chances are you wont be able to just walk on to the lax team without ever playing

I suggest you try playing goalie, it's a lot of fun. Its not terrible to pick up if you put effort into it.

No thanks, I'd rather be able to feel my shins.

Unless your a small school who doesn't have a full team. Our JV team had 12 kids on it.

Good luck homie. Lax is a blast, great sport. Played in HS, club ball in college, and now coach HS.

Like someone mentioned earlier, hit the wall every single day. Use both hands. Lax isn't an overly difficult game to understand with a little bit of coaching, but you won't be able to do anything if you don't have a good handle on the stick.

Good advice, just make sure you work your offhand as well, you'll get the basics pretty quick, so after that, having a usable offhand will be a huge advantage (and an absolute necessity).

I played D, if you want to, make sure you still learn to play with a regular stick, it will be easier to learn the basics, and then spend lots of time doing agility ladders. With and without a stick, offhand, switching/dodging between, crossovers, anything you can think of.

so you're just gonna quit baseball b/c u didn't make the team one year? if you switch over to lax that's the nail in the coffin as far as you're baseball career goes...no baseball kid will want you coming back...its the classic rivalry b/w baseball and lax kids in the spring at all highschools...ur being a bitch if you switch

You'll probably make the team, but do you really want to be associated with the sport that is responsible for every douchebag frat bro out there?

If you are coordinated and somewhat of a natural athlete, you should go for it. If not, it'll be a long miserable season of disappointment, especially if you are competitive and hard on yourself. You are starting a fairly complex sport deep into your high school career, so while you are learning basics, everyone else will be working on strategy and polishing their skills. With that being said, if you are willing to put in the extra work and think you can progress quickly, go for it. Its a great sport and definitely worth a try. I've played since 3rd grade and spent a number of years on a great travel team and it was always a solid time. This year, my senior year, I had to quit because I couldn't get cleared because too many concussions from other sports and activities.

I would also suggest this being one of your future teammates.

i've played lacrosse my entire life and i can assure you that it is most definitely one sport that you are born with the ability to play and actually look like you know what you're doing. not to discourage you from trying out, but there are many good points above. when i was in highschool, we hated the baseball team and had the classic rivalry. so if you switch, they most likely wont accept you back. All the baseball kids think lacrosse is so easy, but when you get to the varsity level, it's way harder and more calculated than baseball ever was in my opinion (having played baseball and switching over to lacrosse myself). I look back and i had some of the best times playing lacrosse with some of the best players who are currently attending some of the best D1 schools in the nation. I think you need to ask yourself why you're choosing to pick up lacrosse. If it's just to occupy your time and have fun, then most definitely try it. But if you find yourself fantasizing about being on denver's starting attack line, then you're way too late. I say go for it and enjoy it while you can because you might not even have the option to play a sport in college. best of luck.

Im going on ny second year of lacrosse. I started my junior year as well and i highly reccommend starting. It's a great experiemce and i made a lot of new friends along the way.

So much drama in other schools... In my school a lot of the kids play all of the other sports in different season and there is not even close to a rivalry with the baseball team. My experience has always been a lot of kids that love lacrosse, and only a few douche bags that want to start fights/have big egos. Most kids played for fun and they ended up winning the state championship last year. You will be fine just ignore the annoying kids and practice your stick skills a lot.

Listen to this kid. I started late...8th grade. Our high school was ranked top 10 in the nation back in the day when I played. I didn't get much time obviously. That beng said...made some amazing friends, got some killer workouts, and learned the game of lax on a top ranked team. I played club in college and suprisingly was way better than a lot of kids since I came from such a highly regarded school. Go for it. Much better than baseball.

pros:

yo. last year was my first year playing lacrosse. I was in 7th grade (now 8th) went to a few lacorsse camps in the summer and have fallen in love with it. next year as a freshmen I'm looking to make varsity for my highschool in northern vermont. I played when i was like 6 but then stopped, so i knew a little bit about the sport. I played goalie for a bit of the season because my dad played D3 college goalie and pushed me in that direction. its kinda difficult and you need balls to do it. THEN along came a the d-pole. holy shit I love playing defense. It so much fun. you get to whack kids and hit them and get mean with them. Its a great way to get into shape or stay in shape. If you play D just be fast, learn to throw pokes/lifts/slash and hit hard. just work it and you'll love it. fuck baseball man.

slash and hit hard.

This is what I really hate about entry level lacrosse, a lot of beginners/football players/hyper agressive kids play defense and give little kids like me concussions and that just makes it unplayable. There is a way to play defense without over the top body checking or slashing, just watch college lacrosse.

Okay first off you don't know anything about me and can't even say I'm some big burly defender. Because I'm not. All I said is its a fun easy sport and quick to pick. I'm not the reason you get concussions. not my fucking problem.

Don't worry I didn't think you were you just said you are in 8th grade... I just in mean in my experience there have been a little too many of those kids that play just to hit, which I think is a dumb reason to start. Better to love the sport then be a hyper-aggressive sociopath.

I did the same thing in high school and it was fine. I played hockey my whole life so picking up lax was really easy, you just need to practice throwing and catching with your weak side.

You're never gonna go anywhere with it since the kids who have been playing their whole lives will have a huge advantage, but it's really not a difficult sport at all. Out of all the sports I've played lax is probably the easiest to learn and excel at, that's why there're so many kids who get recruited to play. It's definitely a fun sport it's just too bad that the kids who play it take themselves so seriously

The lower the level the more fun lacrosse is. If the JV team isn't that serious plan to have a blast. Remember 8th grade lacrosse being the most fun sport ever.

I can imagine JV lax at the school I coached JV soccer at being fun as hell.

JV lax at my school was like varsity 2.0 just a crazier coach and more running and a pretty high level there were some good starting material D3 college level players in my town who didn't make it to varsity for one reason or another.

I had to play goalie to avoid possibly getting cut completely from the program in my high school (I couldn't have made freshman baseball either) it sucked.

Now lets stop thinking about that and how much the ball hurt when it hit your thigh (shins stop hurting after a week you kill the nerves) and think about skiing since Im about to head out the hill I skiied on for high school ski team in 20 minutes via a stop @ the gym!

I hate this attitude so much. I played goalie for 6 years and ran in to so many kids who wanted to keep because it was "less running". Come on people! If you are going to play goalie you are in a leadership position, you can't be some fat lard who no one respects. I had to work with so many kids who wanted to play goalie because t looked easier, one good shot to the knee and they were over it.

Sorry for the rant, if you really want to keep go for it. If you just are lazy don't do it. And if you are going to turn into a pretentious bro please don't play.

I don't know where you play, but playing good lacrosse is not an easy thing to pick up. I know kids who have been playing all their lives and work really really hard and still don't play at a level to be varsity let alone play in college.

I play in vermont where it's somewhat big. I guess it was just easy for me to pick up..? I'm sorry if it wasn't as easy for the guys you know. It's not for everyone.

one year when i had to take the first few games off because of an injury one of the lazy kids on my team wanted to try goalie but it didn't work out to good for him we ended up getting anhilated. I helped work with the lower grade/ level goalies and they would think it was going to be a super easy position but once they stepped into net they looked ridiculous. I sadly moved to a new school that doesn't have a team so I'm looking for a club team for next year.

I played for one season in high school, so I don't have much advice to give besides this: Hit hard. A lot of the kids on my team were great players but held back on their checks. My older brother played defense for five years so when I started playing he showed me how to throw your entire body weight into a hit, and I started knocking bitch-ass freshmen off their feet. If you slam the wind out of the guy covering your position in the first 2 minutes of gameplay, you'll have a lot less to worry about going after a ground ball, and girls will love it.

Pretty much the reason why I almost played lacrosse in high school(money went towards ski season). Don't know if they have enforcer guys in lacrosse like hockey but that's pretty much what I wanted to do.
