i feel that, after a while, it helps you develop some creativity. I used to roll a lot but stopped my senior year of high school. When I was at my peak of rolling one of the big things in rolling was "improv." Basically it's just like finding something cool to jib on skis, but with skates. One good example is if you were to find a banked planter box you ride the tranny up then do a little handplant on the lip. Ideally there would be a wall or pole to bonk or roll along. anyway, the point is that you develop an eye for jibbing/skating things differently.
It does help with rails a lot too, though it's a weird feeling the first time to grind with skis and realize you are locked on to anything. one of the major differences between rolling and skiing is the size of everything. It's hard to find anything outside a skatepark where you can throw big spins.
