St. Marys this summer

My friends and I want to go up to St. Marys glacier this summer (June or July not really sure yet) to camp for a couple days, and hike around to ski and just see the sights. Is there any camping up there? if so is it open camping?

Pretty sure you can't camp at St. Mary's Glacier. There are plenty of places near there to camp though, like North of Central City.

i have camped up there more than once, and seen many others camping up there

i think its on national forest land, so good to camp on (not at all positive about this)

you just need to be careful where you park, they will ticket you if you are at all parked on the road, and locals are protective of the parking

I will most likely be camping up there for the 4th of july

St Marys will kill it this summer for sure will this incredible amount of snow we have had. People camp at the lake right there all the time and just park in the "pay parking area" leave a ticket on ur dash making it "look like" you paid and you are all good.

Like a couple people have mentioned there is going to be so much snow this summer. Saint Mary's is a good place to go once all the other snow melts out, but especially this year it will be pretty unnecessary to go there until probably at least July, although of course camping up there sounds fun. If you are interested in skiing lines as well as just jibbing I would definitely recommend Rollins pass. There are sick, steep lines up there that last through July.

Rollins Pass last year August 26th, shit was still skiable and steep as fuck.

Thanks that helps a lot, but yeah we probably won't be going until later just because of Abay being open. And where is Rollins Pass? it looks pretty sweet!

More than avy gear you need some spring/summer avy knowledge for skiing lines like that. If this is obvious I'm sorry, please disregard the rest. The avy concern for summer is wet slides which occur in the afternoon from water lubicating the snow. Cold clear nights lead to safe mornings for skiing. In the afternoon if your boot sinks to your ankle in the snow or you can wring water out of a snowball its time to get off steep slopes.

Haha, I still can't believe you skied that by yourself at dusk, that would have scared the crap out of me. Can't wait to get back up there this summer, I bet it will be great this year. Have you heard of challenger? I guess its basically another skyscraper in the next bowl to the north. So you can ski challenger, hike back up then ski skyscraper.
And simplesteezy, Rollins Pass is basically located directly between Eldora and Winter Park. To get there you drive to Winter Park then take a dirt road back East to the divide. Any car with as much clearance as a subaru can definitely do it.

you also need climbing gear, i.e. ice axe. its a horrible idea to ski steep summer lines without climbing them to get a feel for the snow. i believe this shot is right by skyscrapper glacier

I went up there 2 weekends ago to check it out and there was so much fucking snow it was an awesome sight. It also looked like they had the CU campus rail jam rails up there too.. Once it warms up in July it will be so prime!!

Could you clarify what other climbing gear you would need for snow climbing? I would say that crampons go hand in hand with an ice axe. I totally agree with you that these 2 tools are completely necessary for climbing hard spring and summer snow, however I disagree that it is necessary or even a good idea to first climb summer snow that you are planning on skiing.
I agree that it is very important to know what the snow conditions you will be skiing are like before dropping in, but I don't think a long snow climb is necessary to do this. Spring is different, when conditions are changing dramatically day to day as the snow compacts, but by mid summer (when the Rollins Pass road will be open), the snowpack should have transitioned to firn, meaning that although afternoon surface slides are possible, the deep snowpack should be locked down. Also, checking small representative, but lower consequence snowfields in the area should provide insight into what is happening on the snow surface. Also, snow climbing is a skill of its own, and not something that should be attempted for the first time in late summer because self arresting is very difficult. But if one is going to ski Skyscraper they should realize that it is a steep line that ends in rocks, and that if you fall on summer snow you will accelerate very quickly! I think soderfunk was probably also getting at this. Please let me know what you think about this soderfunk.
But, if one isn't up for skiing a steep, high consequence line like this, Rollins Pass has the King Lake bowl which is even closer to the parking lot, has a trail that you can hike back up right next to it, and has a nice long run out so there is no concern for sliding into rocks. It also has a real fun cornice to jump off of at the top. If you are thinking about skiing Skyscraper I would recommend checking this out first.
A couple pics of King Lake Bowl:

Those 2 pictures were taken around July 20nd last year, obviously a bad snow year and the snow was still darn good. When I went back to ski Skyscraper around August 20th the snow was getting pretty dirty, some really good turns, but then large dirty sections as well. I'd say first week in Aug is probably about the last guarantee for a high quality snow surface.

do you know if the handrail that only had one leg on it is still up there or did someone take it? it barely fit in my subaru on the way up it would be kinda a bitch to take down.

haha you should let me know, i am curious, we had a lot of fun off that thing. tho it was a lot of work to bring it up, we brought up 3 other rails but didnt leave those. so much fun. and cliff jumping. a blast

got out there for a few hours today. still a lot of snow left, the cornices are so fun. skied almost all the way to the car!

didn't see any boxes or rails setup, might bring up a fatty PVC pipe next time...

i have football...

i'm looking for somewhere to go on friday with my dad though, and then camping at st. mary's saturday-tuesday

that looks sick! i'm gone this weekend in snowmass for emu fest but i need a partner to get out somewhere in july. hopefully getting some turns on independence pass.

I went on the 18th, still so much snow up there. No rails or anything at St. Mary's, but there's still a lot of snow to ski the steeper parts. The steep narrow chute into the lake still has enough snow to hit too, if you're feeling brave.

was up there last weekend, still plenty of snow and two rails. one big piece of pvc and one big blue playground post. good stuff!

skied St Marys on August 22nd and it was amazing. The most snowed Ive ever seen up there in August in the last 3 years. You could ski the entire snow field from top to bottom and the last section is gnar. The turns are dirty but the snow aint bad in the last steep section. You cannot fall though....and my friend fell, right into the rocks, he was fine cause he was able to put his legs right up against the rocks. You could even send the cornice at the end but if you tumble you are dead. Unbelievable skiing for August I think. Once we get some snow should be dope up there for late Sept.

Awesome to hear its in such good shape, I will definitely be heading up there once we get a storm or two. Scary to hear about your friend, I watched the exact same thing happen to a friend of mine a couple summer ago, he slid full speed head first into those rocks and somehow just came out of it extremely briused.

I've wanted to get out for a tour for a while now, but I've been scared away from Berthoud by all the reports of a thin, unsupportable snowpack. So, Erik and I decided to go up to St. Mary's yesterday. It was great to be out and get some skinning in.
