SSD size/raid help

Right now I have 2 500gb drives in my desktop, and a 2tb external. I also have a lot of crap, start up disk is full, and I've wanted an sad for the speed. I'm planning on backing up my files, then doing a clean install to the ssd. I want to use the ssd for system files. I also want to put the 2 500gb drives in raid 0, then use the 2tb external for backups only If I am working on making a new edit, should I keep the raw clips on the ssd, then move them to storage, or just put them on the storage drive? Also, what size ssd should I get? Doesn't need to be insane, I have about $150 budget for the drive, but I only have data 2 connectors so I don't need the fastest drive. I was looking at 240gb drives, but I don't use more than 50gb of raw footage for a project, and it seems that a lot of people just use 120gb drives.

From what I could find, the reason most advocated for small ssd and a 7200 rpm/raid/large higher speed drive was partly cost, partly codec. It seems like the bottleneck on most systems with h.264 would be the processor, so an ssd wouldn't make a huge improvement. I will be editing hacked gh2 footage, and might upgrade to a raw video camera later (within the life of this drive). With that and the fact that I have an 2x 4 core xeons, and the budget, it looks like the 240/256 option will be good for me. Thanks for the help

So 240/256 gb boot/current project drive, raid for storage (music, old videos, Lightroom library), and then the external for a complete backup of the system (I have heard this is extra important with raid 0). New graphics card this summer and I should be set for quite some time. Anyone have experience setting up raid 0 on a Mac or have tips? I am decently savvy and will google it, mostly just wondering if there is anything I should look out for

The point isn't for file transfer or any sort of media storage (although, if you can afford it, a 256+256 raid 0 ssd is great for scratch disks) its so your programs run faster on your computer and its easier to switch between programs without any issues. I still run all of my footage off of either the internal backup with an external or with an external raid via usb 3.
