“Squaw Valley” potentially getting renamed

One of the biggest mysteries to me is why they didn't officially change the name to Olympic Valley Alpine Meadows decades ago. Putting the Olympics in your name is basically pure marketing gold IMO especially when it comes to rich gapers that spend money on ski shit. Would not be surprised if they go that direction now

Ya that’s what we want, rich gapers sitting on all the side hits and landings

That's exactly what squaw is now

yeah.

Also as far as thread, not surprising. It's been mentioned before. With everything going on it was almost destined to happen. I get not wanting to change everything over, but the longer they've gone the harder it will make it.

Also they should rename it Snow Nook.

The should do a naming rights deal like a stadium.

(Your corporate logo here) Valley

Still an awesome mountain though, especially in spring.

Let's do it. Once we remove every racist statue, branding, and building name from America, we'll have solved racism and no person or institution will be racist anymore.

? SCANNING ? FOR PERSON(S) WHO HAVE ASKED ?

25% COMPLETE ?

50% COMPLETE ?

75% COMPLETE ?

❗ERROR❗

THIS SCAN HAS FOUND ❌ NO ❌ PERSON(S) WITHIN A 1000 KM RADIUS WHO ASKED.

Honestly man, very much agree. I'm all for changing these names, taking statues down, but a lot more needs to be done than just a name change. Honestly should educate the public on why they are changing the name (I didn't know until yesterday it was deragatory term).

That movie really depicts the shiftiness of a Corp taking over a ski mountain

No but in all seriousness, I think it's a good idea for them to change their name as it does seem to be in poor taste.

Why does it have to be seen as offensive tho? Why can’t it be viewed more as an excited child would view it, a child named squaw hears there’s a magical mountain having the same name as they do, that kid would think it’s cool, maybe it’s my white privilege that doesn’t allow me to see the racism in the name.

I mean yeah it was meant to be a funny way to ask why does it have to be seen as racist towards their people?

Curious if there's any native americans (first nationals? Idk) here that can chime in on the relevance. My (probably wrong) opinion is that demonizing words only gives them power. I thought I heard every word in the book and had no idea squaw was derogatory till now.

They should have changed Aspen to Fat City decades ago.

It’s been derogatory for a very long time. Try google.

Great insight thanks homie

Edit:being snarky gets us nowhere and I apologize.

My point is, my understanding and research on the topic says of course it's derogatory but it would be interesting to hear the opinions of native americans, especially those who are on NS and have heard or enjoyed squaw valley. Language is fluid and constantly evolves for better or worse, which is why I was curious of a native's opinion on the matter.

The dictionary definition of squaw is: “a North American Indian woman or wife”

can someone please tell me what is wrong with that? What’s wrong with having a valley of Indian women or wives? If anything, you’d think a dope ski area named after North American Indian women would make those woman look powerful and give them a good image.

I did my own research as I was curious and seemed to find that the word squaw was used by tribes to describe just what the dictionary definitions were saying. I also found that it was not originally offensive but became offensive as people used it in a derogatory manner while referring to “North American Indian women”, creating a negative stigma around the word. I was able to read that some indigenous people (keyword some) find nothing wrong with the word. I’m curious to know who is leading this movement to change the name, if it’s some white person speaking for the indigenous or themselves. Here’s a insightful quote I found from a doctor who has done research on the topic.

After researching the topic, I’ve concluded that it’s up to the people themselves whether or not they find it offensive and should have it changed. It seems to me like having “Squaw” valley resort serves as a shrine to Native American women, but that’s coming from a white male, further back to my conclusion. But from what I’ve found and read, it seems to me that changing the name would take away from our diversity, but again, I’m not a Native American woman. After reading up on Squaw’s approach, they are bringing in various tribal chiefs to discuss the name and gather opinion which is definitely the right choice.

From the many native people and friends I've known, it is 100% up to the person on whether it is offensive or not. In the west I've never seen anyone offended by it personally, but also 95% of the native people I know are in South Dakota.

In SD most people aren't offended by it. Nobody says it at all...I can't remember the last time I heard it said. I just get the occasional confused or weird look when driving around back here with my kst sticker. Had a native coworker come in laughing his ass off s"youre keeping them chicks true eh?"

Tldr: very up to the individual or the tribe to feel how they will about it. There are like 500 to 600 tribes in the us, each with their own culture. It's silly that people group them all into one.

Yeah, I have no personal experience with the word, and had no idea there was controversy surrounding it will yesterday. It’s defiantly a tough choice to make because like you said, there is tons of different native tribes which all have the right to take offense to it or not, but meeting with local tribe leaders to gather their input is for sure one of the best solutions squaw can do imo.

Didn’t read far enough earlier, was just surprised to hear you actually got shit for it up here. Makes sense if it’s considered “native slang”, definitely not enough people to know it’s a resort.

Nah it’s chill though? I don’t care less I’m really the last person that’s going to be offended. I think this is all pretty wack

It should definitely be renamed.

Imagine that you're a Native American and some random white people come to your continent and spend a few hundred years killing you, stealing your land, and just abuse you and your culture in general.

Then those white people have the gall to build a ski resort on the land they stole from you, and then they use one of your words as its name, as if they ever gave a shit about 'honoring native american culture' - the same culture that those white people tried to destroy for years.

That's why it should be renamed.

In short, white people really suck. Find a way to mess most, if not, everything up. Agreed.

So many downvotes ? , a downvote should be accompanied by a click button with a list of names since people can’t quite and say why the dv to begin with

I mean we whites have kinda been an “unsharing”, “commandeering” possessive bunch that say ok this is ours but you can use it and maybe we will have some sensitivity to your feeing for the media....
