yeah they look like shorts with snow pants under them

its just extra powder padding, you can zip off the black part. also the holes in the knees are used for mogul competitions to tell if your legs are closed together

the colors they have up are FUGLY, i like the black and white ones in freeskier

It just seems like more stuff that can get wet/heavy.
