We've already gone over this with the whole 'religion' thread but I insist that spirituality is not nesissarily the same thing as religion. What does everyone else think?

i think spirituality is a totally different thing. people that are spiritual don't necessarily have to believe in a god or anything. and i don't think that religion is necessarily spiritual. i mean, im kinda spritual i guess but im not religious at all...i go to church like twice a year--christmas and easter

I've always been down on religion (we won't get in to that again) and I assumed that spiritualiy was the same thing. But, recently I've learned about Toaist so I guess I am spiritual, in an atheist sorta way. Eh?

I agree with 1080chick. I think that depending on the way you see it, Spirituality can be everything or nothing at all to do with religion. For me, skiing is a spiritual thing. Park jibbing isn't but when I'm standing on a ridge with the raging noise of silence in my ears and beautiful expanse before me, that is spiritual, that is me taking a breath, holding it, letting it out and thinking, 'whoa'. It's a state of physical and mental equilibrium with or without God.

I agree with Tim and 1080chick. I think spirituality is what makes you want to live life and gives you purpose and I don't think a diety is the only way of acheving spirituality. I think it's all about mixing and matching and finding your own happiness.

btw, Tim, I loved what you said about skiing being spiritual. I completely agree. Isn't that why we are all here together at NS?

i find that when i just sit down and think i... well i dunno what happens but it really gets to me. I saw the Dalai Lama on wednesday and he had some really good things to say on the topic, so many i couldn't possibly put them all down

religion and spirituality are different. u can have one without the other,or both, or neither. I think spirituality is being at peace with yourself and nature. some religious people I know arn't spiritual at all. they go to church every sunday for an hour or so, and then they are completly un spiritual.

hmm I see a lot of people adding things to the definition of 'religion' religion isn't necesarily going to church. religion is just your type of belief.

I think Spirituality is just recognizing that there is something beyond humans... something greater that connects everything.

If you wanna learn about spirituality in the sense that it is the force that connects all beings just read up on 'Inscape' and 'Instress'. I just did a reasearch essay on a poet that talked about both so I had to do some mega-research.

yeah I think you can be spiritual without going to church, but I think church is a good thing. get to be with all kinds of people with similar beliefs and stuff, it's not a bad place to be

yeah i hear what times saying. getting first tracks.. is cool even in ontario. just being alone. doing something that fills u with joy is very spiritual. like when me and beau are in the middle of a field at dusk just standing there watching everything around us. with no noise or just the birds its a cool feeling

If you read a lot of books on it and stuff, you will realize if you are a completely spiritual person, you ccan't be religious at all, because religion violates the basic idea of spitirualism. God's are fine to believe in, but studying religion is like moving into a pre-fab home, someone made it up for you, youdidn't build it yourself. Spirituality is all about making your own moral beliefs based on what you believe in. In my religion, I make up the rules, not God, I just have to be sure I don't abuse the power I've given to myself.

Did that make sense?

so, where do your morals come from? If religion is like moving into a pre-fab house, with morals and accountability built into the framework, I'm wondering where you get your foundation.

I get my foundation on personal experience and examining human behaviour....wait not on human behaviour, on the behaviour of all living things, I compare animals to humans constantly 'cause we're not that different...true, I believe that eating red meat is bad for you..but Im a weak soul, I can't resist...So I'm going to hell?
