Sprained Ankle and Skiing

So, I rolled my ankle two days ago playing soccer and according to my doctor I have a grade II or grade III sprain (they can't tell until swelling goes down). Obviously I am hoping it is grade II because from what I understand III is pretty bad.
So, assuming that it is a II, who else has had this injury and how long until you were skiing 100% again (obviously this is your experience and not necessarily the same for me)? Part of me thinks it wouldn't be so long seeing as ski boots stabilize your ankle, however I can't walk and it is crazy swollen so I'm not sure.

Oh, and I hope this isn't a repost. I looked for old threads about ankles thinking there would be some seeing as there are so many "Dr. NS" threads however I didn't see one.

If you let any injury other than a broken bone in your leg or broken rib(s) stop you from skiing, then you're a pussy.
I reckon you'll be 100% before 3 weeks if you're not an idiot.

Hmm. I dont know. Ski boots put pressure on your feet in abnormal places, and imagine landing on your ankle.

Just what I thought off the top of my head, no real experience *knock on wood*

I'll take the "pussy" approach on this one
Depending on how serious you messed up your ankle you have to decide: "is skiing the first month of the season really worth possibly further damaging a joint used every day?".
You've still got a month or so of recovery im guessing before skiing really starts. Don't make you decision now, see how you feel in a month. If you are 100% giver hell, if jumping up and down still hurts I don't suggest taking a risk.

in case you have failed to notice this but a ski boot holds your foot an ankle completely in place and pretty much acts as a cast with a little bit of flex. just something to think about.

these are my ankles. my right one is about an inch bigger in diameter than my left. skiing hurts a ton. but the swellings not going down any time soon so I try and deal with it.

If you can get your foot in your boot you're good to go. Just don't put any pressure on it if it hurts. Being stuck filming your friends isn't so bad.
If it's really swollen and you can't get your foot in your boot, then you're out of luck I guess.

dont worry you'll be able to ski in no time, i sprained my ankle last year at the end of september and was still able to ski opening day at abay. it also kinda just depends on your pain tolerance but im sure it will be all good.

What!?! This just scared the shit out of me. A year and you still aren't skiing 100%? This better not happen to me or I will kill myself, shouldn't you go see a doctor or something?

ive broken each ankle requiring surgery and sprained each ankle about 4-5 times. on each occasion my ankle turned into a grapefruit. the swelling is always very tender, so the boot is going to be incredibly uncomfotable. but at least in a boot youre locked in compared to that of a basketball shoe or football cleat. now the chance of making it worse is so much higher if its already sprained...stretching the ligaments in your ankle is never what you want if you dont want to make them weaker. a sprain is tolerable but if you roll it while its sprained youre going to be in some pain. a sprain is going to hurt for a number of weeks if you keep on it.

with ankles, its play at your own risk. i move very fast so im always prone to hurting my ankle. the best thing for it is strengthening and getting them stronger.

BTW I bailed skateboarding a year back and my ankle looked identical to that picture. Healed up pretty fast but the first few weeks were brutal.

I sprained my ankle the last week of my season, and tried to ski the day after. It was incredibly painful to put my foot in a boot and I couldn't turn left. But, that was the day after. I did that in end of march and was skiing at windells in June and had no problems whatsoever. It may feel a little weak when you first land/ski on it. So just let it heal and don't push it and you'll be fine to ski within a month I'm sure.

Good luck getting your boot off. It hurts like a motherfucker.

I've got firsthand experience on the matter, and if you go skiing with a badly sprained ankle, you won't be walking on it for a week. If it's only slightly sprained, you could probably just pop two Advil and tape it if you REALLY want to go. My advice: just wait for it to heal up. You don't want a recurring ankle injury.

same thing happened to me, and i went to windells 2 and a half weeks later. my ankle didnt really hurt then but now i have problems with it and its constantly swollen. if you have to ski do it but its best to lay off it

not to thread jack but, i recently sprained my ankle and i have a similar question. I do not believe it is as bad as his (i can walk, run, and jump without pain, only an awkward step causes me any pain and i do not have severe swelling). My real concern is there is a rail jam coming up and i want to compete but i dont want to run the risk of seriously hurting anything right before the season.

Dude r.i.c.e it up

Rest

Ice

Compression

Elevation

I'm in a sports medicine class and i roll my ankles like twice a year. trust me do 20 mins of icing everyday will reduce the swelling and elevation is a big key factor too.

Good luck hope it gets better.
