Sponsoring

How good of a skier are you? Are you someone tha ta company thinks could be marketable? Do you influence all the kids at big name comps about what skis to ride, and the new styles?

Its not an easy question, and for the big name companies (Oakley, armada, siver etc) it is yes in one sense how good of a skier you are, but also how influential you are in the ski industry as well as marketable
 
I know peeps that shred big mountain that can do backs and fronts and thats it, but others in the park that do cork 10s and aren't. It just depends. If you ask, your not good enough.
 
what about shop sponsors? Like for comp entry and stuff like that.. will they just ask you to wear their logo (hoodie, stickers) and stuff like that. or thank them if you make the podium.
 
this is sucha open ended topic. theres so many factors. how good you are, where you live, who you know, how do you do in comps, etc
 
depends how old u r to and what u can do. if ur like 14 u should be able to 7 easily and probably 9 with a grab. and cork 3, 5. 270 on, off. switch-up u know.
 
I can't afford to pay entry to comps most of the time, and the parents want nothing to do with freestyle. (they want me to race). Would a sponsor me video suffice to get the shop to pay your entry? that way they can see how you compete?
 
i can 7 but im working my way up to corked 9's this year and next year in the park i only do these off of small crappy kickers so park should be easier and better footage
 
I have the same problem, I can throw pretty big but I don't ride in Comps so I have shown videos and I get alot of free gear but I am not straight up sponsored it hard without competing
 
what kind of sponsorship do you want? a big name ski company sponsorship? A chain of sports stores sponsorship? A resort ski shop? a hole-in-the-wall ski shop? It all depends on what you are looking for. In some cases you'll be fine with being only able to throw 7s and 270 onto rails. Anyway, competition results and networking are vastly more important when landing a sponsorship than your best trick ability in perfect conditions.
 
im 13 and im ok in the park like i go big can do most rails throw 3's working on the 5 but i rip in the trees and the backcountry is it possible for a 13 yr old to get sponsored for like bigmountain and backcountry?
 
no offense but im pretty sure most companies now want a skier who can throw stuff down in park cuz thats what most of the comps are. I rip in big mountain too, i throw 7s off the cliffs there and drop daily, but its not that impressive unlessy you throw like a huge back or something off a cliff. i asked companies about BC stuff already and thats what they told me
 
not really. not if you are only doing 3's, and fives. you will get ripped apart in a comp. you are probably better to wait to get physically stronger and be able to drop bigger cliffs, and get an arsenal or spins/inverts.
 
actually in ygo i saw a bunch of 3's and 5's in the video you might not win but you can do well enough to attract attention but yes. YOu might if you can drop a 5 into a switch line down a huge bowl like pollard but i dunno if ur that good
 
i really only started skiing park this year and so im just working on that and next year ill be able to ski every day so i really think ill get better but i understand where u guys are coming from and are there big mountain comps? or is that just a silly question
 
I just made a promo video for my freind, we will be sending it out to about 20 companies soon, and have already given it to a volkl technica rep and D structure. I would say to be sponsered you need ALOT of variation, not just one money trick that you can make every time, but a big bag of tricks from spinning unnaty, switch tricks, pipe skills, spinning onto rails, and more.
 
i have noticed that sw hits are $ when trying to get sponsored bc obviously a vid cant show exactly how good or not good you are, but hitting a sw 5 or 7 will make the sponsors love you...
 
first off, I highly doubt you can throw a 7 off a cliff, secondly, backflips off cliffs are easy McCheesy. Its not about dong what the sponsors want. Its about making the sponsors want what your doing. For example. Mahre doesn't do jack when it comes to switch 10 in the parks and stuff, but who cares cuz he has a mean zero and big 180's and alot of super smooth dope tricks.

If you have to get sponsored you just gota learn the times trixck. At the moment, its a Switch 7 in the BC. And truck driver grabs. You won't be origial or cool in anyway, but you will be sponsored.

In my opinion tho, screw getting sponsored, further the3 sport of skiing, not yourself, and do things different, if you are different but are good at being different You can start a revolution. hehe and thats WAY better then being sponsored.
 
at this shop near me kids go sponserships just by being in their shitty raill jam and impressing...
 
If you are so concerned about being sponsored, it may be time to re think why you are skiing in the first place.

On that note, people love to see something different - it doesnt matter what it is and im not giving you any ideas (that would defeat the purpose). Next time you zone out in math class just try to come up with something unique that you can do with a video or on snow, because any company gets shitloads of videos with 900s on park tables and 270 on 270 offs. Im personally starting the broken rail ski backcountry revolution (ha ha).

Look heres the deal. You can never get sponsored unless you get proactive and talk to people. Go to some comps, talk to some people, do some tricks, have a good time, and dont be afraid to say your in the market for a sponsorship it might just work out for you.
 
bro, if you are throwing 7s off a lot of the cliffs at Crystal, you'll have no problem landing a small sponsorship. That's really damn impressive. You also should have no problem winning a bunch of local comps. Make a video and approach some shops, you'll get results.
 
Well it also depends because those people doing cork 10's in the park aren't really seeking a sponsorship or entering comps. are they? There are a lot of wicked good skiers out there in big mountain and in park that just really choose not to try to get sponsored even if they easily could.
 
my thing is is the favt that i dont care if im sponsored or not but i want to be able to go and rip everyday when i grow up and it seems to me that only sponsored skiers get to do that and the other thing is is how the hell are people supposed to pay for heli-skiing and stuff if there not sponsored? i would love to try heli-skiing but it costss soooooooo much
 
i bet theres a bunch of people out there better than all the pros just rippin it up out there but just doesnt get in the media or anything... fuckin sasquatch type guy or somethin
 
The problem with that is you aren't physically powerful enough to keep up with big mountain skiers. That's why you pretty much see big mountain skiers that are 19+. My friend just got sponsered by smith and he's shredding back flips off 40 footers, etc. So you have to be able to ski and huck and be powerful.
