Speed Ramp?

Ive been messing around with speed ramps lately, and i really like the look of a smooth speed ramp (aka stept). But when I do it in FCPX, it seems fairly choppy. Is this due to having the 'slow down' section too long? For example, This video was shot on a gopro (yes, I know.) at 720p 60 fps, and it looks choppy through the speed ramp. Any advice? Id really like to make this effect look nice before the winter.

For 60fps, never slow it down below 40%. Also, why bother with 720p60. Crank er to 1080p60 if you have the option

Part of the reason is that FCP doesn't have true speed ramps like premiere does, I believe. It just cuts the clip into a bunch of short clips with the speed gradually getting slower. Generally if you mess with it enough you can get it to be smooth.

Tip: Export your edits at 24fps rather than 30fps. That is the TV standard and what you're probably used to. Not only will it be more pleasing but you'll also be able to slow down your clips more without them seeming choppy. In FCPX, if you set your project to 24fps and "conform speed" under the clip speed options, it will slow down the clip to 24fps no matter what frame rate the clip was taken in. This allows you to slow down 60fps shots to 40% rather than 50% and even slow down 30fps to 80%. It's very hard to tell the difference between 30fps and 24fps, but anything lower and you'll be able to - it'll seem "choppy."
