Speed check

What’s the purpose of speed checking jumps? I just fuckin’ send’er. But Fr id love to know how to speed check a jump properly. Cuz idk how much times I’ve overshot the landing. #INEVERKNUCKLE

Follow somebody in for speed. Hopefully somebody who doesn't suck. Can also ask people the speed but people can be full of shit.

Watch people , if you see someone land in the sweet zone , follow em next lap

Or look for someone who looks like they know , follow them to the side of the jump to experience the speed and memorize it , if they land in the sweet zone , repeat

Or , just fukn send it it’ll b ok you have my personal guarantee

Just ask anyone waiting to drop if they’ve hit said feature. If yes, ask if you can follow. Local park rats usually have them dialed in.

Only really had to speed check once on a jump in spring cause the melting snow had changed it. Ride on with the speed you think you need and hockey stop as you come up the lip so you can see the gap. It gives you an idea of you need more speed or not

When the jumps are big, i always dedicate my first park lap to inspecting the kickers. I pull up fast to see just how fast i'm able to go and stop along side the kicker(not on top) Take it all in. Realize you've got this shit. Even watch someone go from there. Touch it, become one with the kicker OP. Acquire a small sample and now test the ph levels. If its over 6.9, lay out a backie on the next one without inspection. Bound to be a good day w levels like that.

First run of the day take a small speed check, take it deep on a straight air. Next run you find that perfect carve that lands you in the sweet spot. Then it’s game on

I can tell you what not to do

Shits so brutal. Snowmobile tow ins on big jumps are fucking sketchy. One try you case it, and the next you go to the moon. Easy to misjudge speed.

Also pretty legit that MOST places put a staging area where you're supposed to drop from. Generally even if you straight line it from there you'll catch some landing. Way better than the guessing game. When you're passing the knuckle and still going up you're headed for the no fun zone.

Speed checking is what the name implies man. I always like to and I think it’s good to always hit the in-run of the jump a little faster than you’d like to be going make the room for error smaller. By hitting the in-run with more speed than you need, you’re also able to tune your speed of the jump to exactly how you like so you’re the most confident.

I think following someone in is your best bet. you can always just feel it out, first hit I alway go a little fast because id rather go big than case that shit. then just dial the speed throughout the day.

I tend to take more speed than I need and carve off the jump and hit it at an angle, it means you’re less likely to overshoot and then you can gauge whether or not you need more or less speed from that.

Roll into the jump if you need to but please don't hockey stop on the end of a nice lip, especially if you're on the east coast/midwest. Icy lips suck.

Deadass. You're only allowed to hockey stop at the lip if you're sponsored

No. 6.9 is basicly basic! AKA neutral.

He said over. So either neutral or acidic

Although I guess it could be like 6.99

Have you ever overshot a jump so much that your season ended?

New Years day at Iceface NY in 06/07. Typical bullet proof ice coast day. Jump was built at the bottom of the headwall on dannys bridge. Looked to be a good size, tall jump. It could be assumed that drop point was from the flat at the top of hill. That would be incorrect though.

Was with some folks from work at Gore. First run of the day. They were easing into thing, I figured, fuck it, I wanna catch some air. And many airs were caught. I pointed it down the icy slope like the swiss bobsled team. Locked in and ready to fly. I started up the take off feeling great, boom, boosted it, wicked air mom, look at me. Had a nice grab going. Cool, wow, sick. Then I noticed I was passing the knuckle and still not coming down, like an acid trip that wouldn't end. (At least that has cool effects) This was more like, "Welp, I guess this is how I fucking die". I tried everything, rolled the windows down, nothing. Got a little bit chilly at 30thousand feet, so I rolled them back up, still nothing. Figured maybe if I stretched my legs out I could touch, but even stretch armstrong would have been heading for sure death.

And then I hit the ground. I think I tried to skip off the tail and save my legs. I bounced pretty hard off an area flatter than a fucking ice rink. I don't know if I remember bouncing or was just told that. I might have been out.

I guess park crew was sitting and having lunch nearby and saw it in progress. Was already running towards me with radios out before I ever hit the ground. I guess I got up or tried to get up and get away from them and then blacked out.

Ended up coming out pretty well all things considered. Cracked 1 vertebrae and found out a few days later when my knee swelled up like crazy that I had hairline fractures all the way down my femur. I don't think anything else was really fucked up. Just a lot of bruising, soreness, and some concussion action. For my brief dabble in the grand world of aviation I really can't complain.

I wish I made it up there more. I went for a rail jam like 3 years ago and that was the first time I'd been up there in like 4 years or so. Used to make it a few times a season. Tyler Watson did a killer job on the new features. They def stepped up in building as well. They've had big jumps kind of forever, but the rail game could be pretty whack at times.

Also remember one time in 02-03 ish where there was blood in too spots in the park, shit was icy as fuck, and somebody was getting sledded off one of the jump landings. Was not exactly the most motivating site.

Bummed they got rid of the pipe, but they probably haven't had any big events in 10+ years to justify the $$$.

I always wished they'd get more tree skiing, but overall dope place. Steep af, and death if it's icy.

Everything used to be more rad in the parks in those days

My ‘local’ “hill” had 3 pipes at one point, then two, then one, then none

I'm bummed i didn't get to ride pipe more. I skied when Gore first built some berms and then the next year a pipe. But wasn't able to ride gore for a while and switched to boarding anyway. Pipe was snowboard only at the time too and they were strict douchers. I had learned to backflip and 5 on some janky ass 1/4 I built at the mountain and that was as far as I got in there. Never really learned to boost. I mean I can get a lot higher out than most normal people these days but never learned the pipe proper ya know. Bummer coming up in that era when everyone having a pipe, but being an hour drive from one still and riding a bullshit mountain with no park.

Maybe it's for the best I guess. Probably would be in a different line of work if I wasn't constantly obsessing about park building.
