hey guys im writing a speech on art and music and how it has the ability to lift us up and examine our world around us. Anyone have thoughts on this? will make good discussion and help me :)

The arts can certainly reflect the world around us. Read the works of Langston Hughes because although not always evident, his poems always show the persecution towards African Americans and basically give the reflections and history of his people in a few simple words. Native American poetry also does this. Through the arts we can see the past of a people and really understand them fully. In many situations a group or indivduals expression through art is like a window to the person or people. I have alot of other things to say, but lets see what other people say and I can just respond and build off that.

From a musicians point of view, I don't think anyone who isnt a musician will quite grasp this, is this amazing feeling of absolute nirvana that u get when playing. No one can imagine the feeling u get when u improve a perfect solo, its the most amazing thing... its like u leave ur body and become the music like thats the only thing that exists at that moment in time... its extremely useful in dealing with problems in life... its a great release i mean... and from both the art and music side although not necessarilly always true u get an unjaded perspective of the world around u... the best examples i can think of at the moment are Walden and Civil DIsobedience, both by Henry David THoreau, These books cut through all the crap of society and explore the true essence of nature and man...

Throeau's focus was on the society and when man had the right to do what in society. Philosiphers like Maslow best describe the true actions of the individual regardless of his society.

yes but his speech is about how art makes u examine society and thats what thoreau did... I agree with u about the individual nut this is about society not the individual
