Speakers for a dorm room- need help

im moving into a single after this semester and i want some nice speakers for my room (and maybe a sub too, but i can do without it). what are some good speakers (under 100. preferably less than 80 but i have some wiggle room)? my friend has some jbl ones and they sound nice, but i dont really know how they stack up against other speakers. any help? thanks! i will + k for good responses too
 
me amd my roomy last year found this speaker system at walmart for i think it was 40 bones. it came with a sub, and 5 surround speakers, it was kind of shitty but not too bad, plus it just plugged into our ipods. we hooked it up to our tv and we had legit surround sound. thats a good road to go down if you dont want to spend much. plus we could have anything too loud in our dorms, and you prob cant either, so you dont want like a big fuckin sub
 
can you get the jbl's cheap? get em then. or go to a record store and get the nicest you can affrd from the mid-70's
 
i hear bose arent really the best, its more of a brand name thing (prove me wrong though- im just looking for quality and if bose has it ill go for it but i just hear bad things), and i dont have an ipod so thats out of the question i guess
