Southern California Backcountry

the San Gorgonio Pass has some nice BC, if you like to hike. Or you can just get a pass at Bear Mountain and ski the Bow, Deer, and Goldmine Canyon from the Geronimo run.

go up to mt baldy. then go off the back side and have some brooooz drive up lytle creek road and pick you up. make sure it snows alot first though.

Geronimo is the weakest double black i have ever done. I am just down in so cal for school, they way overrate their runs.

mammoth is not socal. big backcountry spots are the Mt. Baldy area(as someone mentioned) and San G near Big Bear (tallest peak in SoCal at around 11,500 ft.). Haven't skied the BC around Baldy yet but managed to get some July turns off of San G a couple of years ago. It can be quite a hike to get into there (I think about 15-20 mile round trip?) but there's definitely a lot nice steep runs with chutes and cliffs. But getting enough snow is the problem in these parts.

Seriously. I was down there once a few years ago. Its not HORRIBLE, but its by no means what I would rate as a double black... if anything its on the low spectrum, and its only a double black because its super long. I was there on a "powder day" of 4 inches or something, which isnt too bad, and definitely fun, but its nothing to be excited about, especially when Mammoth has so much more.

Mt. Baldy Backcountry is really big, and really steep! You can get 4,000 ft of vert. drop if you drop in in from the top which is over 10,000 ft.

usually there is snow until at least June, sometimes July on the backside. But this year is a no go! Driest season on record! You would be lucky to even find a patch back there right now. Try it next season.

Word. I love Baldy. Its wicked when there is good snowpack.

Next season bro.. just hold out hope for another 2005..
