South eastern skiers

App parks were always fun, but I’ve been following the insta and it looks super fun now. Would love to visit again and do some hot laps.

Beech is super fun too.

Hawksnest was my favorite back in the day but they went under.

App was always a little cutting edge for parks in the southeast. I remember being in a Salomon contest over 10 years ago.

the parks at app have gotten insane

I lived in Atlanta before moving to CO and let me tell you, those people aren’t skiers. The southeast gang would consist of vacationing jerries and college kids in football jerseys

For all of those down very far south lets start a gang and rise up

I'd argue the ratio is about the same in CO, especially at an epic resort. The local ski communities in the southeastern hills are alive and well

Coming at ya from SW PA

Lmao people downvoting this are just salty. I fit in that demographic and I agree with u

Would snowshoe in West Virginia count? Wouldn’t mind checking the place out, I associate that state with heat, not snow.

How are the skiers and skiing there?

Snowshoe is dope, I haven’t skied there since I moved to CO years ago but I’ve been longing to go back. The mountain is fun and the locals scene is awesome, I’ve even been looking at slope side condos there recently because I’ll never be able to afford it here.

Snowshoe is my daily resort and it’s dope. There’s a relaxed chill vibe amongst the people, lifties, skiers , patrol and management as well as the restaurant and bar scene. The average skier here is really cool.

I associate the place with heat too , but in the winter they do quite well temperature wise, their elevation 4848’ keeps it cold, and even tho they miss out on lake effect etc, they’ve always had expert snow making management and have recently spent big money on upgrading their guns and I’ll tell you they do a great job.

The average skier there is Jerry but the place is never crowded, the general feel of slopes is “tame” , “family”, “overly groomed” , off piste is nil or out of bounds , the glades are terribly cut and no snowmaking hits them so they aren’t often open but when they are they’re fun. There’s 1 cliff under the ballhooter lift that’s OB. We got a few slopes that are 1500’ continuous run, There’s usually 3+ parks, maybe 5 or 6 if you count silver creek which is their sister mountain 2 miles away and ya night skiing.

Price ranges range from as low as $75ish for a room and up so it’s very affordable to stay, foods cheaper than a lot of resorts.

Anybody that comes HMU I’ll show ya around, film for ya whatever

Probably not right for you , I’ve looked into it but along Seneca trail there are properties for like $8,000 , needless to say ... needs work ?

I almost bought a mountain lodge condo two years ago they were selling rooms for $33k plus a mandatory $20k in updates due by a certain time but that place was so noisy.I like the Seneca , rimfire and Allegheny condos, everything else either has bugs or is waaay to expensive for me.

Where do the skiers usually come from? I’m guessing the SE area. Would you get people from NE?

How is the snow? Is it like NE snow where it’s kinda icy?

Seems pretty affordable. A quick Zillow search shows condos for $30k in the area.

Lately I’m trying to check out skiing in “hot” places. I did Taos New Mexico. Was going to do Vegas and Flagstaff AZ before the pandemic hit. WV will be on that list.

I’ve met people from all over, Wv, Va, Pa , Maryland and OH seem to be most common, I’ve met people from Russia, Alaska and a lotta Philippine workers ( that maybe changes this year cause COVID idk ). Can’t say I’ve met anyone from the NE or even NY area there...

I actually really like the snow here, I’d guess it’s a combination of their snowmaking, and the temperature consistency there. The snow doesn’t really ever get tracked out during the week, it’s either corduroy, or slush to hard , hardly ever experience ice there, it seems to always stay cold without warming up much so there’s not much of a melt / re freeze .

Yes the real estate there is quite in expensive, I’d like a duplex there, I’d like to provide next to free living for someone to manage the property while I rent the other half out, a triplex would be ideal cause then I could stay as well but I do, point is there’s a lot of opportunities there, I just need the right partner.

Skiing in hot places... hmm I’ve skied snowshoe in feb at 70degrees before in February ?

I’ll look through some of my POV vids from snowshoe, I’ve never posted them bc they r POV and not any tricks and I have trouble transferring from go pro to phone for uploads , but maybe give ya a decent idea of the mountain, a quick you tube search for “snowshoe ballhooter rock drop “ , “sawmill glades” and “shays revenge” showcases their mountain quite well.

99% of lodging is at top so the views are pretty nice too.

The $8,000 pos sounds about perfect for me

Why are they so cheap? I always think about it but keep forgetting to check real estate around there everytime I go. A huge problem with Snowshoe is no clean affordable lodging nearby. Slopeside and on resort places are too pricey compared to my normal, airbnbs are either gross or pricey, and hotels are too far or gross. This could be a decent idea. Maybe even wait and see if there's a bit of a housing crash

Ya I mean it’s a shelter , bring a generator, hot plate, water filter heater shotgun and your good

I would personally build a concrete shelter outta cinder blocks and 2x12s to sleep in bedroom tho. These places look like a strong fart could cause collapse.

The population there is low, tax revenue is low, jobs are scarce, low paying and laborious. Anything like a Walmart, Lowe’s etc etc is about an hour away. A lotta people just can’t afford to upkeep homes and they become un liveable. A great many people just moved away for work so there are vacancies that fell apart. And it’s low lying mountain creek land prone to flooding. Idk about the quality of the schools but I dont see anything special. There are no universities close, basically nothing within an hour and a half of the mountain. It’s not killi so it cannot generate the revenue or sell as comparatively. And until recently, there were NO large real estate companies developing or scooping down there. That has changed as there are several now.

Another reason they are inexpensive is your talking about quaint little homes for a coal miner or single family one floor ranches and trailers on a 1/3 acre that have not been modernized, probably are not up to code for sale which means buyer expense unknown til inspection. Well water , septic tanks etc just missing a lotta modernization, as well as just being in general poor condition.

For lodging Seneca is nice for $140-350 not depending on room size, rimfire slightly less, and Allegheny even less and I find them all clean and will stay with my wife and kids. Ikon will get you discount if a better discount is not available.

The snowshoe inn at bottom he’ll no , not at 75 and not at free either lol gross.

There are some developers offering modern homes around 135k+ but for me that ant worth it.

pocohontas and Cass are the two main towns surrounding mountain there.

Bristol, Tn here. I’m down to meet up anywhere in NC, VA or WV. I somehow managed a year without breaking or tearing anything so looking forward to upcoming season. I just hope we get some snow this year or I’ll be driving to Snowflex. Beech and App are only a little over an hour away which is nothing and always have a hard time finding any one (decent or who skis park) to go with. I fully support this!
