Sound System

I just got an '02 Chevy Tahoe, and it needs a new sound system. Now. I'm going to be driving it for a while so I want to do it right the first time, but I dont want to do a ton of major alterations/cutting, etc. My questions are basically from square one. What kind of stuff to get, how much can I expect to spend, the works. Also, where in an SUV would you put a sub and not destroy the functionality of the thing? I know people have done this so somebody help me out.

^dont get bose

check out crutchfeild.com they have tons of shit and it even tells you what you can put in your specific car.

for subs, how much power/what size are you looking for? my brother had 1 15 inch 2000 watt rms sub in an acura mdx and when it was at like 1/4 volume it shook your vision, so i think that is a little much, but if you answer that stuff i might be able to help you out.

get alphasoik for the best quality out there www.alphasonik.com

i have two of the Alpasonik 12 inch Mahams in my 98 dodge dakota with a 4800 watt amp

You're probably going to want to replace the deck first before the speakers. You can have excellent speakers and subs and they'll sound like shit if you use a chevy stock deck. Get a Alpine or Pioneer (I have a nice MP3 Pioneer deck I need to sell coincidentally, PM me if interested). Then replace the speakers in the car with something other than the stock ones. If you have some money, then get Infinity or something more top end. You can usually get good enough bass with just replacement speakers, but if you have extra money / really like bass, then putting a sub box with a nice amp and some 10's would work in the back behind the last seat. Check Craigslist.com and try to find one for sale locally, since shipping will be a bitch with these, and you really dont need to make a new one.

oh and by the way, polk audio makes good speakers. my brother got some in his acura and after he blew his sub (the 15 with 2000 watts) it still had a lot of kick to it (the speakers were real claer and stuff, they sounded amazing). make sure you get a seperate speaker amp as well. my brother knows alos about this shit so if you want help, i can get alot of answers from him.

So far I'm think on going with new speakers right from the start. Assuming I'm a noob, can I install them myself?

Also, can somebody fill me in a bit more on the whole concept of a new deck, installation and such.

And I dont need a huge sub, in fact a smaller one would be great. I will most likely end up seeing what kind of bass I get with new speakers and go from there, but I dont want the car to shake so bad I have to tighten bolts everyday. I do really like bass though, as long as it doesnt kill anything else.

im not sure about speaker installation, but i think its kinda hard. subs arent that hard though. For the tahoe, the amount of bass you want you could probably get from 2 12's rms'ing at around 1000 watts. i'll look around a bit and see if i can find anything good

I want a new in-dash reciever, I dont need MP3 capability, but I want a port for a sub if I decide to get one, and I want full equalizer controls if I can, any suggestions. I'm going to start here, so what about installation?

Fiberglass your own box itll come out sick and u can mold it to your likings. I ve done a few of these and they sound good and look nice all painted up. if u end up making a box make sure it is the right size.

not only that, but it also has to have the right amount of volume space, you cant just make a box, it has to be made to spacific air volume to make it sound right... with out the right amount of air volume, it will sound like shit... if i were you i'd get some audio pipe stuff

Way more than I need to do here. I just need to install a new reciever and new speakers and see how that goes, but people seem to ignore my other post.

Listen to this man, everybody else who tried to give you advice are morons especially the guy who wants you to buy shit off of crutchfield. If anybody knows two shits about car stereo it goes likes this: 1.Deck 2. Speakers 3. Subs not 4000 watt subs with no mids or highs that sounds like a nigger box.
