they're super steep and that's the only thing they had in the park. they were on a pitch that should've had jumps rather than rails.
 
For some, yes. For those who don't like icy landings, repetitive features, and mandatory speed checks, no.
 
Man, yall are a bunch of whiners. This thread has gone from trying to help out Dingo to debate over how terrible Big Sky is. wow.

I am pretty surprised how easily you guys thrash and hate on Big Sky without taking any background info into consideration. Most of you have no idea about the regulations/legality/specifications the park crew have to abide by. If I have to explain more, I can, but before you generalize and make a sweeping negative statement, just think for a second about everything that goes into that one feature/area.
 
You're right, I really have no idea what goes on behind the scenes to get the park going. The only thing I've heard is that the park crew is stuck with Ambush, or at least they have been for the last couple years. They do a pretty darn good job with what they have to work with, that's for sure. But, at the end of a run through the park I can still have feeling that I could do with a little fewer down rails and icy steep landings. It's not like my run feels a whole lot better if I think "Oh, they work really hard and they have a lot of obstacles to climb, so that makes the park really really sick." Now, that being said, things can always be worse, so I really do appreciate what Big Sky has to offer. Their park was a main reason for me to get a pass there over bridger last year, but there is still room for complaints.
Ok. Enough negatives. Last year, I thoroughly enjoyed the PVC cannon rail, that thing is a whole lot of fun.

don't forget big sky's park is most likely being reduced to swifty only this season. i've heard that they already cut half the park crew too.

as for the big mtn vs. big sky debate, terrain wise whitefish owns..yes big sky is considerably bigger but the majority of the runs are the same, except for the tram. I'm partial to big mtn cause i grew up there, but the variety of terrain and the quality of snow is better than any other resort in MT. Big mtn's park crew is a bunch of lazy mofos, but when they finally get shit up, it's dope. however the big jump in the fish was up before big sky's kicker at the bottom of ambush and close to twice as big.

There is definitely a better park vibe of skiers at big sky, and their rails are better. Moonlight is only worth it for jibs, the rest of that mtn just pisses me off. Bridger is sick for a few hours on a pow day, till it gets skied out, other than that it's all steeps then all flats. Big Mtn is the best all around in my opinion, and its way bigger than bridger and moonlight. it could go back and forth forever but calling the comparison of big mtn to big sky, moonlight, and bridger ignorant is straight up rediculous....no hate intended, i live in bozo now and i love big sky, but big mtn will always be better IMO.
 
Off the skiing debate that will never come to any sort of conclusion or answer......
Anyone want to talk about backpacking/hiking/etc with me? I'll be out there in the late winter/early spring and I'm looking to take advantage of Montana's great outdoors.
 
There is a lot of good stuff around the state. I could go on about stuff in central MT where I live which wouldnt be relevant to you.. your going to UM right? I haven't spent near as much time in the western part of the state as I would like but Glacier National Park is super nice as is the Bob Marshall/Scapegoat/Spotted Bear wilderness areas, its one huge roadless area. Ive been into it a lot on the eastern side but on the western side Ive only been to Jewel Basin which is very nice, we were there skiing in mid June. There are some real good books that you can get for a decent price ($15 at most) that will have pictures, maps, etc...
 
I actually just got back from a pretty cool hike today. We did Crazy Peak in the Crazy Mountains; they are east of Bozeman, so not really convenient for U of M if that's where you are headed. I haven't done much at all around Missoula, but Glacier Park is always fun if you want to bag some peaks or something. Mostly bike riding for me though.
 
May be better than any "resort" but some smaller areas are pretty hard to compare too. Not trying to start more debate but what your saying isnt really quantifiable, there are two many variables. For example I skied 4 days a week last winter and i skied pow at least half of the time and probably at least a third of the days from December through April looked like this;

Uh I don't know how far exactly. We were on trail for about 4 miles into the lakes right beneath it, and then we had to leave the trail and scramble to the top. So, total it was probably about 8 miles on trail and 3 or 4 scrambling, I think. It took us around 8 or 8.5 hours i believe.
 
I like to go hiking in the Pintlers which are east of missoula, there are a lot of trails, lakes, and glaciers. Also the Bitteroots are awesome, so beautiful, they are south west of missoula. but that time of year you'll be in the snow
 
everyone's biased towards their home mountain, but from the looks of this you definitely had a better snow year than big sky and big mtn... however the 07-08 winter in whitefish was fucking epic.
 
^ i beg to differ that i skied prolly 20 to 30 amazing pow days at bigsky this year i was a lifty and saw plenty of snow all over the peak
 
This thread went from debating parks to pow to resorts. It's getting silly now. Let's just band together and make fun of everyone skiing somewhere besides Montana.

I'm so close to having my shit figured out for the December move guys... sooo close.

might even have 2 or 3 potential jobs lined up.
 
Depending on what i hear over the next few weeks, either working in Missoula or Kalispell, or working at Moonlight Basin, or Red Lodge.

If i ended up at Red Lodge, I suppose i would just have to take online classes thru somewhere, but they keep emailing me and being quite adamant about me coming and working for them for whatever reason.
 
Msu is pretty big on the forestry and in the environmental department... the agriculture department is pretty big down here, and thats all it was not too far back. I think the aggriculture department is just getting bigger and kind of booming even more down here..

. and by aggriculture, i mean the school of aggriculture wich is just a broad term for everything, forestry enviornmental sciences, enviornmental biology, etc. its pretty big, and getting a degree in forestry and whatever from msu looks pretty good on a resume i think.

i didnt even know the forestry program at u of m was that big, i was always under the impression buisness and law were what u of m was about.

 
hahaha. Sounds like this place we have out here in california called Dodge Ridge. We call it Dodge Rocks because it doesnt get the best snow, and it's very gnarly with rocks and shit everywhere.
 
It's pretty small and their snow is unpredictable at times, but Red Lodge is a super fun town to be in. I really, really want to live around there in the summer.
 
if you're planning on moving to MT, and planning on skiing/working at a resort, why would you not move to bozeman and have the 3 (big sky/bridger/moonlight) on the skirts of town with shred lodge rougly 2 hrs away, great divide an hour and a half away...
 
Wait- I just had a revelation... if we're both moving to Missoula and we're both looking for roommates... why dont we try and find roommates together... I didn't know you were looking too.

UM's media arts department + journalism + english departments = very attractive because i'm open to any of these. And MSU folks, believe me, i know.. MSU is rad too... and its still a future possibility, so dont try to convince me either way haha.
