detroit will win in 5 games... heres why. 1st, Detroit's offense is equal or better than pittsburgh, they all both have plenty of star offensive players and secondary scorers but detroit has more. Filpula, Franzen, Draper, Maltby, Hudler, and more. Another difference is their forwards are all accountable and reliable defensively. I believe detroit has 4 forwards that have been nominated for the selke (best defensive forward) zetterberg, datsyuk, maltby and draper. I believe pittsburgh has only 1 player (stall) who has ever even close to getting nominated. Those two pairings at even strength will be able to shut down or significantly limit pittsburghs top 2 lines. These lines also put a lot of of pucks in the net and get key goals. Therien will soon be forced to get creative with his lines and be forced to change constantly on the fly in order to try to get crosby's line away from zetterbergs as detroit will love that matchup. Detroit is also the best puck possession team in the league so these guys will be forcing the big lines to do a lot of skating. Detroit only struggles and gets beat if the team plays too physical for them. Pitts has some physical players but I dont think they have enough so the game will likely fall into a finess series, which plays into puck possession which detroit owns at. Add in the fact that detroit is the best faceoff team in the league and pitts is the worst only helps detroits cause even more. Those offensive shutdown people does give them a ridiculous PK so i think pitts PP wont dominate either.

Now the D. Detroits D is the best in the league, only Anaheims D is even close. They are smart, quick, versatile. I truly believe that anyone on Detroits D would find themselves in the top pairing on PItts. Also with it being a speed game some of the pitts D are just big and slow. Put them in a skill game and they will get exposed.

Now goalies, sure fleury has played well so far I give him credit. and yes he is older than those world junior days. But hes still a flake until he truly steals a couple games, which i have to say he hasnt really had to do yet. But hey he did look ridiculous in that world juniors before he choked in the gold medal game. Osgood is proven and a veteran with big game experience and RINGS!

The west is a way stronger conference this year, but I have to say neither team was fully tested because every team they played had key injuries, or just exhausted. I said this before the playoffs and will say it again, the only way a team from the east will win is if the team from the west comes in completely beaten down from the war in the western conference. Detroit's only injury is to franzen but he will probably be back for this series

Also for the record I am not a fan of either team, but I have to say I will admit that I am biased because I have never been a pittsburgh fan and stevie Y is from my hometown, and i am not a fan of crosby.

unfortiantly you have failed to hear almost every person that has something to do with the nhl say that the pens have the best defense in the league. also you dont watch hockey much because the wings have played a bunch of pussies the whole playoffs and the pens are going to hit hit hit and they wont know what to do. we only have one big slow defenseman Hal Gill and the dude is fuckin good. Wings in 5 lol pens will win both home games. i think you also forgot that hossa and malkin are on fucking fire playing like gods.

where are you finding that. Thats BS. I have yet to hear anyone say that Pitts has the best D in the league. Lets look at their teams D one at a time. Lidstrom or Sergei Gonchar? Im sure every GM in the league aside from may Shero would take Lidstrom. Rafalski or Witney... popular pick is Rafalski, Shneider or Hal Gill. No brainer: Shneider, Then Detroit has Kronwall, Lebda, Chelios and Stuart. These people own Detroits other D's... Sydor, Letang, Orpik or Scudari, Switch up the orders however you want and believe me aside from Ray Shero no one would take Pittsburgh's D over Detroits. Yes they have a lot of solid young players but they are still maturing. This is not about 3 years down the line - at that point you have an argument, but now there is none.

Playing a bunch of pussies? Seriouisly, you clearly dont watch the playoffs. Pitts beat a slumping ottawa team that was filled with injuries, who couldnt put anything together, who last year manhandled pittsburgh. I still believe last years ottawa team would beat pitts this year. Ohh then next there is the NYR. they are not known as a physical team, they are a skill team, who yes is becoming more physical but their D is still a big question mark. They are a team that always disappears after the first round because they dont have the physical play. Next up is philly. Yes Philly is a physical team. But life is a lot easier when their 2 best Defencemen timonen and cobourn are playing injured. Now look at who detroit played. Nashville: thats a very physical team. Colorado is a physical team and very talented but they had injuries. Then Dallas, yes they came in tired from their war with San Jose but they also just beat Anaheim. The three most physical teams by far in the west. The west has also been known for playing more physical in the playoffs. Detroit beat each team by at least matching their physical play. Know what you are talking about before you say that detroit beat a bunch of pussies. If anything i would argue that based on who played who, i know you cant control who you play but pittsburgh definetly had a softer trip to get to where they are.

You are forgetting how many detroit players are on fire. I dont mention that because look at franzen and the goals hes scored, and then the big 2s are even in points in the playoffs. Just get used to seeing holmstrom pissing off fleury and zetterberg and datsyuk controlling the puck down low with pitts top lines not being able to play O because they are stuck playing D

sounds like YOU'RE the one that doesn't watch much hockey. the western conference is by far the more phyiscal conference.

West coast of what? Lake Champlain?

I actually live on the west coast... dont insult it by putting the wings there..

Penguins are going to absolutely smash the red wings. And that's not just because I want them to win I just can't see the wings stopping the momentum of a young and talented team.

I live North of Seattle, but family is from Pittsburgh.

Actually, I had basically ignored the Penguins as a team in recent years until they started showing talent this year. I'm stoked on this comeback though!

No matter which team you're going for, you had to admire the fight this series will be, the talent from the young rookies is umbelieable, like REDICULUS while the vetrens playing in the series have easily matchable skill. This will be a great series, with great goaltending and im sure some intense over times.

That being said im saying pens in 7, i just love the intensity the young players have...and so what you can cover malkin.....crosby stall and many others are still there, you just cant beat a bunch of Canadian kids on the pens. the wizard of croz himself has set himself up to win it, and IMO no one can touch him.

Red Wings should win. They could even sweep, but I'm going with 6 games. Here's the thing no one seems to realize: the best hockey player in the world will be in this series, and it's not Sidney Crosby. It's Nick Lidstrom.

The comment earlier about Pitts' D being the best in the NHL is absolutely absurd. They have played amazingly well in these playoffs, but Detroit has the best team D in the league. Please understand that the Datsyuk/Zetterberg line is a CHECKING line, not a scoring line. They're just a checking line that scores a hell of a lot of goals. Draper, Maltby, McCarty are perhaps the best defensive line over the last 10 years (besides maybe Holik's line 7 or so years ago). Franzen, Filpulla, Samuelsson... all defensive forwards first, scorers second. This is a team built to prevent Malkin from being Malkin.

Pittsburgh is a young group. None of them have ever played a team as good as Detroit in the playoffs.

Yeah, Franzen's back for game 1. You never know whether the time off and concussion will have cooled off his hot streak though.

Penguin Strategy

-More puck handling less physical, Detroit will kill us in physical play.

-We need to keep this "win the first 3 games" attitude. If we take a W at detroit early on, we got it.

-Hopefully Detroit uses the same strategy as the other teams we faced which is:Cover Crosby and Malkin at all costs. Then we just have Hossa Stall Talbot put it in.

-Kennedy You deserve a goal already.

other than that, should be a total blood bath, but seeing as a sweep is pretty much out of the question, i hope it goes to game 6 so we win the cup in pit.

Wings in 4 or 5, I'd like to see it go to seven for the pure sake of being to watch all the games since only the last 5 or scheduled to be on NBC, but Detroits depth and sheer talent and experience will beat out the Pens.

The Wings have stunted the whole league all year long, its there year, 2 great goalies, Zetterberg/Datysuk combo, Johan Franzen if he comes back from his injury. I dont know, diving just want win a series for the pens this time around, Detroit doesn't play the same game as the Rangers or Flyers, they own the puck 60-70% of the time with pracitcally any team they play, even in a loss to Dallas. If the Pens can stay out of the box, they may beable to stretch the series to 6 or 7, but due to the young and OVERLY apparent immature talent that has been shown of late (Malkin and Crosby) they may find staying out of the box hard against a very very solid and strong willed team like Detroit. Holmstrom will also cause alot of problems in front of Fleury that the Penguins haven't seen yet. It'll be a great series, but Experience wins this cup, plus, its the western conference....comon
