Sony vx1000?

My friend is looking at getting one of these. Some input would be nice on how it performs. and dont tell me to get something else unless it is just as good or better for cheaper. he can barely afford this.
 
Get something else.

Vx1000's are about 13 year old cameras. They will not survive in the winter. I would suggest one of the panasonic gs series cameras, or a Canon HV20. (If he can afford it)
 
i was thinking about the vx1000 for a while, but it performs terrible in low light; im trying to get the panasonic gs-500, thats a pretty good 3CCD camera...
 
The HV20 isn't a true HD camera anyways, so I don't see why any computer with premiere, vegas or final cut can't handle it.

Now if it was true HD, then that's a whole different story.
 
well if you want to only shoot skating the vx1000 is probably one of the best cameras. You can also look into the trv900 which is also 3ccd but less money. Then you have the more recent gs series, which are very good for the price, and probably closer to your price range. So, if you can wait until winter or before, or until he gets more money. See if you can get a DVC-30 or a Gl-2 or something on the higher end.
 
keep in mind that it's a very old camera and that it will be very difficult to find one with minimal hours on it, also he fact that if repair is needed it may be difficult to find parts since it is discontinued
 
I had one and I liked it but after a year I needed an upgrade and no Erikv, it wasn't because I needed an lcd.
 
I have a vx and love it, if you figure out how to work the exposure, white balance, shutter speed, etc, you can get some amazing colors.
 
yeah the vx1000 is still an amazing camera, it is old and i did have some minor problems in the cold, when i used mine but nothing too bad. and i still think it can get better color than pretty much any sd camera. the only thing is that its way better for filming stuff like skating than skiing. if he can afford it a newer vx, atleast the 2000 will get similar results and i think the 2000 and especially 2100 have a better less digital looking footage for skiing.
 
The Sony vx1000 is a ok camera but it is older and can have problems in cold temperatures like others have said. I would look for a Canon XL1 or Canon XH I think they would perform better for what you are doing.
 
all in all my dream camera is the DVX100b which i cannot afford. i have a vx2000 and it is definitely meeting my standards. it has a "custom preset" option which lets you adjust the white balance manually from reds to blues, exposure settings, sharpness, color saturation (yes you can adjust how saturated your picture is!). color saturation is by far my favorite feature of the vx2000. the colors you can suck out of the camera are just unbelievable for a NTSC camera. the only slight downfall with the vx2000 is its quite heavy and really strains your hand filming after a while. but i love my vx and i do not regret buying it!
 
because skate movies are infamouse for having the worst filming ever.

so vx's suit it, because all their filmers do is point and shoot with basic adjustments like shutter, iris, white balence, gain, blah blah but not much else.

they cant even use a tripod to save their life!

vx's can be good for other stuff, its just that they are the most well known amongst every 14 year old skate filmer who wants nothing more than to slap a fisheye on it and film lowww

of course there are exceptions; some skate filmers are amaaaazing and creative.
