the Canon's image quality isn't as sharp as the VX2100 even, but I don't mind because I don't like the image to be super sharp, I like it to be soft. But the Sony HDR fx1 is much better than the GL2. thats like comparing a walmart skateboard to a pro shop one. the GL2 is sick, but the Sony is waaaaay out there....and worth the extra money you say? I thought the Sony was like $6,000 and the GL2 is about $2000.....about a $4,000 difference there dawg.

hahaha stupid dolphins.

the gl2 is a really nice camera, but lately they've been coming out with some better ones

if you decide not to buy the HDR FX1, dont get a Gl2, get a vx2100 instead. also look into the panasonic dvx100a, it is a very very good cam

naw man, digital is the way of the future, if you invest in a good HD movie camera then the quality is editing is far superior to the old 16mm style. oh and i would definatly get the sony. sony just makes such good stuff!

No Props!

yes, maybe HD has less flaws to it, but there are things film do that no digital cam can reproduce. first of all Im not even sure if the Sony HD cam is as sharp as a super16's image quality. plus film just has this classic, soft and grainy feel that is superior to all cameras. I would rather have a super16 cam than a digi HD any day.

The HDR FX1 is NOT an HD camera. It's HDV a compressed format that apart from frame size, is miles apart from real HD in terms of color sampling.

You cannot compare HDV to 16mm, 16 is better all the way, however real HD is getting closer to the quality of 16and 35mm formats, but we're not there yet.

Panasonic is coming up with a real HD camcorder it's on their website, it's sort of a compact version of their Varicam HD Cam.... That will obliterate Sony's HDV toy.

right I was thinking what plehouse said., and you can actuallly get one for 2200 uUSD without the warrentee. where is the dvx in comparison with the GL2, you can get GL's for like 1500 now.

Any TV image that has a resolution of more than 480 scan lines is considered HD. It doesn't matter how much it is compressed, it is still HD.

The panasonic camera is going to be way too expensive. It will use P2 memory cards that are VERY expensive. That camera will not compete with the Sonys (they have more than the FX-1 already) based soly on the price difference.

The Sony stuff is like a nice VW, good but not luxury.

The new Panasonic will be more like a high end BMW or Mercedes, luxury.

Things like Varicam, HDCam (both are compressed, just not as much as HDV) and Viper are the Ferraris.

The GL and VX are the Camrys. They get the job done and work well, but if you can afford better you get it.

Didn't Berman shoot Shanghei Six on the FX-1? Judge if HDV should be used for snow sports based on that movie I guess.

you can't get GL2s for 1500 what the hell was he talking about??

Tankaskier i have to disagree with you man, digital id the way of the future, especially for poor indie filmmakers like myself. just to dick around with 16mm, cutting and pasting film is a pain the ass. get the sony HDV cam, record in 24fps, set the color levels to match that of an expensive film camera and download premier pro.

No Props!

too bad that when I was looking for my GL2 I tried that place and it was a scam.

anything over 480 is HD? says who? so ntsc, and pal are both hd? The panasonic is not overpriced for what you get.

My weiner is probably harder than yours.

" anything over 480 is HD? says who? so ntsc, and pal are both hd? The panasonic is not overpriced for what you get."

Let me rephrase ... anything over standard definition resolution (in the US that is 480i, 520 or something in PAL) is HD. There are two main flavors, 720p and 1080i. Those numbers only refer to vertical resolution and progressive or interlaced frames, but all are HD.

The JVC HDV camera records in 720p the Sony stuff in 1080i. THEY ARE HD. Yes they are compressed, but they are still HD resolution. No they are not as good as a HDCam or Viper, but at VX or GL isn't as good as a $50,000 SD camera either.

Cutting and pasting film? What the hell? It's all about filming with actual film and then digitizing it, haha.

Right.. but the VX and Gl's CCDs look better than the CMOS in Sony's prosumer HD cam, you have to compare them to see

"Right.. but the VX and Gl's CCDs look better than the CMOS in Sony's prosumer HD cam, you have to compare them to see"

The FX-1/Z1 use CCDs, not CMOS. The HC1 (cheaper than FX) uses CMOS. I have heard it does some things better than CCDs.

I also don't get how an image with more than double the resolution and a much better color space will look worse than a VX or GL. NONE of that makes sense.

yeah but that can easily be fixed in editing by cranking up the contrast and brightness eh chauncey?

All hail the hypno toad!

dude I already bought a GL2 from there. Not a scam.

THE HDR shoots in 1080i, w/ CCD, and like a double image stabilization system thats supposedly uber good. Tanaka, what the hell are you talking about?

Editing is not the solution for everything. Bad footage is bad footage and cranking up color res and sharpness in post is a band aid action that will show when compared to good footage that hasn't been tampered with.

What da poo are you talking about man? I never said anything about 1080i and things of that nature.
