So to anyone on here that does this.

How did you get into it? Costs, training, etc.

I don't speedglide but have looked into it for years, but been too young/poor to get into it.

The analogy is a lot like BASE jumping and skydiving. Speedgliding/riding/flying as it's referred to is an extreme variant of paragliding, which you would need to get into first usually. A lot of people do jump straight into it and apparently it works, but it is pretty dangerous to learn as the takeoffs and landings are much faster with a smaller wing.

Anyways you can expect minimum:

~$2,000 in training for either paragliding (P2 & P3 rating), or speedgliding

~$300-1,000 for a harness (paragliding harness typically costs more)

~$1,200-2,500 for a wing

~$500 ish bucks for helmet, radio, gear etc.

~7-10 full time days learning from your instructor

reddit.com/r/freeflight has helpful info for anyone into hangliding, paragliding, speedgliding and some really cool videos from their user base

Most people in Europe drop some cash for an intro class and then just buy a wing, which can be had for about $1k for something decent used. I think the real stopping point for most people would be finding places to do it, as you saw in the video a lot of his rides were off of Mont Blanc from Aiguille du Midi. You can do anything you want in France, not the US. Here people launch and land right next to regular piste.

Yeah if you try that in the US on a resort without direct permission it's a minimum of your pass getting pulled, and if they really feel like proving a point they'll call the cops on you for sure.

But yeah in response to the costs, that's definitely more in concern to paragliding, if you really want, you can cheap out and not learn much and go straight for it when speedriding.
