Someone please tell me why this happened to my edit! (HV40 and Final CUT) +k

so, i'm getting back in the editing game. got some good footage and i wanted to practice and make an edit. i think it turned out all right.. except when i exported, shit got fucked. the image was grainy with horizontal lines all over the shot. someone must know what i'm talking about; i see it every once in a while on edits on here. if not, i can upload the video (but it seems like kind of a waste of time right now)

i have a canon HV40 and shot in HDV 1080i60

i imported to final cut express with the settings: Format: all formats, Rate: 29.97 and Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60

i exported as a quicktime conversion with the settings:

well somehow i clicked create

i used quicktime conversion export with settings: Compression: HDV 1080i60 Keyframes: Automatic Frame rate: Current

the dimensions were set at: HDV 1440 x 1080 16:9

i did not click "deinterlace source video"

can someone please help me?? i want my export to have good quality. basically i need to learn the correct exporting settings for my footage. i know it's also possible i imported wrong initially... now i'm ranting. go!!

BOOM there is the problem. you are shooting at 1080i/60 which is interlaced footage. basically means that half of the image is recorded at its own 30fps and the other half of the image is recorded at its own 30 fps. then it puts the two together giving you the lines. by clicking de-interlace source video it takes a little longer to export but it puts all those frames together without the lines. that sounds like what your problem is. i had to do that with my most recent vid on youtube cuz i accidentally shot interlaced footage on the hvx200...anyway hope this helps. try exporting again and check that box

thank you. also i'm realizing that my exported vids are like all over 300 or 400MB. any suggestions?

also, final cut is somehow saving like all my footage clips to my hard drive after i import them. but the files are huge and i dont really want them. any advice?

for the file sizes, i think that is becasue you are exporting in full 1080x1440 or whatever you said vs a slightly smaller 1280x720p hd size. (this is what i mostly use for online videos). its still hd at the smaller size and will reduce your file sizes but you might not get as high a quality on something like vimeo full screen is all. if you wanted to keep the resolution the same and you have compressor, i know you can limit the size but there may be some quality loss if its saving way lower than what you exported.

as for final cut saving all of your footage clips do you mean they are duplicating or are they just the raw clips? in order to edit in final cut it needs those clips. they aren't stored permanently in the bin that you see when editing, its more of a "file path connector" if that makes any sense. the bin is getting all its clip info from that original clip saved somewhere on your hard drive, if you were to delete those, the next time you opened your project you would get errors up the wazzu saying that the media went offline. so unless you are completely done with this edit and never want to use those clips again, i would keep them. if they are duplicated for some reason or you don't want them, then you can trash them

i recommend getting an external hard drive tho if you don't already have one because videos will eat up any available space faster than a fat kid in a candy store

thanks. i don't think they are duplicates. and i know/understand about deleting them and getting the "media offline" error message. but it seems like all the raw clips are somehow converted into separate .mov files then saved... it's really weird.

so, i used a de-interlace filter on all the clips. but now i export and the colors are all fucked. ahhhh

did you put a de-interlace filter on the clips in the timeline? i personally think the best way to do it is just check the box at the end when exporting because it keeps everything consistent. it worked fine for me when i had to use it. i would try that first instead of applying filters to all the clips in your timeline

yeah, i selected all clips and added the filter. seems consistent enough. it looks fine in my canvas too when i check it. and when i export the jagged horizontal lines are gone. but if i click that box without the filter nothing happens :( any tips?

First off your going to want to de-interlace the video, so next time check that box. As for the rest heres a video form youtube that I used for my first edit:

hmm thats weird. do you have any other weird filters applied to the final edit before you export and check the box? besides color or the basics?

yeah thats weird. hmm. beats me then. that usually works for me. but i try and not shoot interlaced footage because of that stuff. wish i could help ya more

on the hv40 if you shoot at 1080/30p or even 24p it wont be interlaced. anything with an "i" is interlaced and anything with a "p" is progressive. progressive is what you want. it films the whole image instead of just half like interlaced footage does. it will be much much better on the eyes, without the lines

i usually shoot in 720/60p for action sports so i can get smooth slow mo out of them but i just recently got a 60D so ill probably mix that up while shooting 1080/24p.
