i'm still not exactly sure how a skier sells out; everyone tells me that Jonny Moseley sold out but i still don't know how. someone explain this to me

i hear people all the time saying that he is a sellout because he made money and got a bunch of publicity, yet those people have no intentions themselves to dedicate their life to skiing. 90% of this site is not going to (or even try to) become a professional and dedicate their life to skiing, yet they turn around and point the finger at mosely because he made some cash living his dream. people apparently consider that selling out, yet themselves are bigger sellouts for not even being a professional.

i would think that for a skier to truly "sell out" they would have to ride shitty equipment, which would compromise their performance, in an effort to make more $$

 
quit complaining about people selling out. if you had the chance to make a shitload of money and get alot of publicity, you would too.

i think that u ski for the love of it and if u get sponsored then that's ok. But if u do what Mosley has done, gone "yeah i'm a skier, see me on my new show" or some shit like that then i guess u could call them a sell out.

Another example could be looking at bands. A sell out for music, would be Blink 182 or Good Charlotte. I fuckin hate Good Charlotte, they think their punk but their just faggots!!! And Blink was good then they sold out for the big buck and now they suck.

I guess if u could relate that back to skiing.

 
id respect him if he was still in the skiing scene, i mean he can go get the mad cash but that doesnt mean he just has to dissappear from the ski scene, i remember i watched a video of him at a comp tryin to do a 360 or suttin on this site like 3 years ago and he was havin trouble so his first hit he just did a grab

When they lose touch with the roots of the sport. As mosely is not on NS, nor seems to be trying to make a serious effort to connect with the roots of skiing, i would say he has sold out.

dude selling out is just an excuse people use becausesome people actually use their brains to make a living. Blink sold out. You know how? Look at it this way. Gwen stefani is the definition of sellout. I say that cuz... Well she starts out with I guess a punk, or alternative band. They start making money, which is fine. And they make a couple more cd's, now they're rich. If they just keep doing what they're doing at this point, they'll be rich. But seeing that more money is in the hip-hop world, gwen stefani goes off and does a solo, hip-hop thing, just to make even more money. And at the same time, she's turning her back on the band that made her famous. And now she has even more millions of dollars, and has poplluted the world with probably the worst, most god-awful song ever created(holla back girl) which is played every god damn minute of every god damn day on MTV.

A skiing sellout is someone who all their amateur life claims that they are skiing for the love of it and that they could do this forever without getting paid then go off and sign contracts and forget about all those kids they skiied with back at home.

I personally would do it.

Besides, I don't think any other skier could have come back in 2002 with enough clout and influence to force off-axis spins in mogul comps. His impact on the sport is immeasurable.

Moseley just left skiing. He wouldn't be a sellout if he kept on skiing and came to at least watch comps and maybe enter a few, but i haven't heard of moseley doing anything skiing. I hate MTV too.

I reckon making money is fine, selling out is more like when you do something that would cause you to lose respect in yourself, like promote equipment you know sucks and kids will buy it and then it'd break and theyd lose all of their money.

selling out is when you comprimise your style or individuality to become more marketable because of money, and still claim to be in tune with the roots and evolution of the sport.

to a normal person, johnny mosely is freestyle sking, a 360 mute grab in the moguls, is freestyle skiing.

im pretty sure plake makes a decent amount of money, but he hasn't changed since blizzard of ahhs, except gotten older

the only problem i have with mosley is that he isn't on the skiing scene anymore...... as far as mtv goes seriously who doesn't want to make a ton of money to host a T.V. show

so what you're trying to say is, NS is the roots of the sport of skiing? Glen Plake isnt on fuckin NS, so is he a sellout? Im glad he isnt on NS because he doesnt have to witness what the future of skiing is....a bunchy of trash talking little kids that are jealous that he got a couple million for being a good skiier. Mosely was never hardcore newschool like tanner......so what is he selling out from? Besides....im sure he still skis, but maybe he just doesnt want to compete anymore. Shit, its not like he needs the money.

I hate to break it to you, but newschool isnt the "roots" of skiing.
