Some of the X Games Announcers...

I hate them! They are so dumb! I am tired of hearing the question "what is your mindset?" Are they trying to sound smart or something? Whats the dumbest thing youve heard an x-games anouncer say?

my favorite is the lady said how they are gonna have to adjust for the snow and said goggle lenses like it was a big deal

on snowmobilers:

"hes wearing a jacket!, its flapping like a cape!"

"I think he'll win this one"

(he was ahead by 10 seconds and this was coming around the final turn)

on skiers:

"Dumont had some trouble in practice, this light snow is really screwing with his head"

haahha i rewound it on DVR to make sure i heard what one of them said, he was talking about pete-o, it was something like "peter olenick is a big guy, he's 6'1 and he is really out there throwin his meat around"

they sound so retarded to us in the ski world, but the dumb people know nothing probably think they are so informant

i was gonna post this awhile ago, but fuck, mike douglas and his dark arts are jinxing the shit out of these dudes.

well they only call air "amplitude" and even when someone nails a trick way better then tanner there like: "yeah but he just doesnt have the style that tanner has..."

i hate when they say

"he needs to get that grab in there he needs to do it like tanner"

like on the 1260

no ones getting a grab in there unless your going as high as dumont

yeah mad gay they have like these surfer voices DUMONNNNNNNNNNNNTTTTT GOIIINNNGGGG SOOOOOOOOOOOOO HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE its also mad gay hows its just like thall and dumonts x games eyah they are the best but show some respect for the young fellas throwing down and stop making like commercials about some HEATED RIVALRY HALL vs DUMOT OMGZZ OMG

any ways everyone hates tanner. go dumont. tanners suit was gay but his buddies scarf was sick

That was annoying the shit out of me, every trick someone threw, "well tanner threw a grab in there", or , "Not quite as technical as Tanner" it annoyed me soo much

I don't think you understand. You wouldn't have this website without Mike Douglas. You wouldn't have a sport without Mike Douglas. All those skiers you like so much? All up on Dumont's nuts? If every X games athlete was in a room with you and Douglas and you started talking shit about him, the first thing that would happen would be dead silence. The second would be one of your idols asking you to leave.

Guy deserves as much or more respect than ANYONE in skiing. ANYONE. So go fuck yourself if you don't like his voice, or the way he calls it.

Usually at the end of an interview I toss out a soft question like the one you just heard, something easy to answer that puts a big punctuation mark on the whole piece and leaves everyone feeling good. Mike wasn?t quite done though. He wanted to ?set the record straight? about the X-Games, because he knows who is reading this, and how much heat he?s taken over his commentary.

I went on Newschoolers.com after the X-Games last year, and there was some major abuse going on. I understand some of the gripes, and I hear a lot of, ?Mike Douglas sucks as a commentator.? What kids need to realize is that 98% of the audience has no idea what they?re watching. If I were to be cool and core to commentate to the whole Newschoolers.com crowd, I would talk totally differently. I would be way more inside, core, and calling tricks. The fact is they don?t need it. They could turn the volume off, and they can commentate it themselves because they know exactly what they?re watching. My job with ESPN is to be a translator for the rest of the world who are going, [in a hick accent] ?Why the hell are them skiers going downhill doing them flippy doodles??

The whole X-Games crew from Summer X and Winter X has to go through production seminars every year. We all get together and we have to sit through a full day of why we suck. Almost every complaint that comes our way from production is that we?re too inside, and that we?re trying to be too cool. They say we need to translate better what?s happening on the screen. You can?t say, ?There?s a switch 10.? The average person has no idea what that means. So I might say, ?He did a switch 1080, that?s backwards to backwards, with three full spins.? We have to do that if we want our sport to grow. I think if we don?t, then kids who are that core should spray paint all their skis black so they have no logos, and never use the lifts. If we want our sport to grow and have better parks, better lifts, better mountains, and better opportunities, we need to reach a broader audience. My job as the commentator is to translate what?s going on in our world for the common man. The only exposure some people ever have to skiing is when they?re flipping through the channels on a Sunday afternoon and randomly catch the X-Games. The better we can make that look, and the more we can make them understand what?s going on, the better off we are.

"It's all about the amplitude!!!!!!!!"

I totally agree with J.D. though. Mike D. may not be a good commentator to all us newschoolers, but he is able to translate what is happening to the masses who have no idea what is going on when tanner or simon drop into the pipe. He's helping promote skiing to the masses which is very important for our sport.

Everyone should respect Mike Douglas. He's got to be one of the biggest contributors to our sport, without him we would be nothing.

true is helped the sport alot but that doesnt give him the right to go on tv and talk like a retard and say half the tricks wrong, i heard him last year call a 12 a 10 and when he called the wiskey flip a double flatspin to 180 i had to mute the tv for the rest of the event

i understand that mike D is a huge contributor to the sport, and he does a great job of trying to communicate to the public about what is going on in the pipe, but if the announcers would get off tanners dick that would be great, i was sick of hearing every run compared to tanners

Please read JD's post and learn the difference. Announcers are not there for newschoolers. They are there for the other 99% of the world who is watching.

^^wtf do you expect, tanners in the lead and everyones trying to beat him, so why wouldnt they campare all the runs to the leaders run...

i somehow agreewith martinis idea. there are a few comments that should be rectified... tehres is no way calling a 12 a 1080 is ok even for general public.

And stating how a corked 360 isnt gonna beat a fakie 10 in a comp is pretty much useless. Why cant he be that guy is not out there to win the comp, he knows the judges want to see big spins, but he decide to be as stylie as it gets and show where he wants skiing to be.

I,m not hating on what mike d is doing, i just think he should adjust some of his speech to give a general opinion aboutwhat skiing is/shouldbe: fun and for yourself, not for the judges and for the $$$$

It's hard as how to count the spins close up and in slo-mo, I imagine he is guessing at stuff in a high pressure live enviroment from a distance?

^ of course i respect your opion cuz your the man and i realize he is announcing for gappers but it just seems like douglas inst paying attention, he knows the tricks and he is sitting there watching it, he knows his shit, i feel there is no excuse for him screwing stuff up. i cant think of more specific examples but after watchign x-games the last few years he is so consistant in pissing me off

I hear ya, I respect him and what he does and has done for the sport. I thought it was funny as to lame. Anyways it was a sick night for skiing, im happy.

i meant ^^. and also i got towed by this guy last week and he was heated over how "those faggot announcers" always sound like retards and shit. that guy didnt even ski. i just dont think douglas makes a good tv announcer, why not vanvalin? everyone loves listenning to him

HAHAHAHAHAHA you had to hear this guy on espn 2 xcenter trying to recap the pipe runs, first he calls everything a spinny 900 with ironcross, then he tries to talk about 540's and calls them 560's probably 15 times. then for the kicker they call peter olenick jussi oksane, and he says"Jussi Oksanen local aspen boy doing a doube flippy called the whiskey flippy on his first hit. I havent laughed so hard in a long time

Dude, you guys think the announcers are bad during the x-games?...I was just watchin' X-center and the guy was calling it a 560 everytime somebody did a switch 7. What the fuck does he think a 560 is!??? I don't care if you know anything about action sports, that's just retarded. He was also calling Peter Olenick Jussi Oksanen. These commentators don't even try.

1) its a game of inches

2) the complexity/amplitude is lacking (seriously i would love to see you do a switch 10 10ft out of a superpipe.)

3)calling a ski a "shoe"

Yeah he threw just about the best pipe run down in history...and he is all positivity. I don't understand why people still hate on Tanner when he clearly is the best skier in that competition.

Back to the thread...I think that this kind of announcing is necessary for a kind of competition that is televised so heavily. The average joe does not know the exact names of each trick thrown down, so its the announcer's job to explain that to the non-experienced viewers. Give them a break...come on you know Mike Douglas wouldn't be like that in say, an NSTV broadcast.
