Some nasty gashes in my skis...fixing on a budget?

Well after some nice backcountry skiing this past weekend I had some encounters with rocks(check out the pics). I have a couple deep gashes in my skis. This is my first pair(wasted money on demos before) so I'm not sure how to fix such things. I was told there is a "ptex" or similar wax that is melted into the cracks...I was told it's also quite cheap. So, how do I fix this myself? Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Thanks bros...

1. buy a p-tex candle

2. light p-tex candle on fire on one end

3. wait till p-tex starts dripping and then drip p-tex on the cracks until there filled. doesnt matter if theres too much.

4. once p-tex has cured for a few hours, take a metal scraper and scrape off the excess so base is smooth.

5. shred.

oh dude i am gonna buy some of that stuff my armada AR6s have been meeting too many rocks and the shop charges me like 15$ bucks to fill the scrapes i gonna go get me a p-tex candle

yeah its easy as pie.

theres a good tutorial on transworld somewhere if you don't know how to do it as well..

P-tex candles will last you a week of skiing maybe. They are very soft, not durable. Take them to a shop and ask just for the repair and they'll do it properly for about $10.

Or if you really want to do it yourself then just use epoxy. The head tuner at my shop is Whistler used only epoxy on his beater skis. And he charged really hard.

185 ARV's, the new ones. they're babies, only a couple weeks old too :(

thanks for all the info guys. I was told it's around $50-100 to get them fixed at most shops(i could be wrong). do I have to wear a mask for the ptex stuff?

Check this site for do-it-yourself info and gear. It's a company out Southern Oregon, where I live. It's kind of a cheesy web-site but don't let it fool ya, they have good prices on everything for tuning your shit!

I tune my own gear and it's the only way to go, gotta have fresh wax! I agree about p-tex not holding up, I use it sometimes but it de-laminates fairly quickly. Check the site out!

p-tex candle, and to the kid who said to use epoxy, in this case dont, stuff like that is small enough that you can use p-tex, it wont crack out or anything like that.

On a side note, i wrecked my SFB's on rocks this weekend, edges bases everything, and the skis held up to it all, i landed a 10fter onto a rock that i didnt see and didnt have a core shot, those skis are bomber

Bullshit. The gouge is all the way through to the base graphics. It will last 2 days, max. If you're doing it yourself you're going to have to throw down some epoxy first, or just go all epoxy if you want it to last better. And how much is epoxy, candles, a file and a scraper going to cost? A lot more than the $10-20 a shop would charge you to fix just that.

Find a better shop if the one you went to said $50-100. Ask for Just a single base repair. No edges, no wax, no grind. $20 absolute max. Or a 6 pack.

dude chill out, the epoxy is good for when it covers a large surface area, those gouges are mm's wide,

p-tex candles are cheap, i havent bought them recently but i think they were 5 for a dollar at my shop. and all you need is a razor blade, which come in like a pack of 5 for 2 bucks at home depot

make sure you clean the gouges out, the normally arent clean cuts out of your bases, they kind of splinter and shit, also cross hatch your base a little, the same way you would with clay or epoxy if you were joining them to another material

^ Yeah, What Neil said. Sharpen the end of the p-tex like you are sharpening a pencil (with a pocket knife). After filling the gouge with the melted p-tex and it has cooled, it's best to use a metal scraper designed for that exact purpose. Can be purchased at the same ski shop that sells the p-tex.

and you should. If you do a proper job of it and wax over it, the p-tex shouldnt come out. Maybe you just suck and you should learn how to p-tex skis?

to the creator, just make the gash fairly smooth and fill it with p-tex. waxing your skis after isnt a bad idea either.
