Solar powered electromagnetic bindings.

That's my idea. Think it's possible? no binding parts, just a magnet that you could set to different strengths. granted, i know very little about solar power and even less about electro magnets, i just thought it would be cool.
 
it could work if it was a sunny day.

but if you were skiing deep powder on a day where it would be snowing, the bindings wouldn't get any solar power, same that you might be casting a shadow on them just by standng
 
i just want whatever kind of bindings they had in SSX On Tour.

fuckin take off my skis in midair and shit.
 
solar power still works on overcast days. uv rays can go through the clouds. shadows would be a different story.

personally, i dont see why they would need to have power? have a magnet on the boot, and one on the bindings. each DIN setting would have different magnets of different strengths... and then click a button that would demagnetize the magnet on the ski, and it could come right off. there's no need to electricity in this case. electromagnets would be way too strong, DIN of 16 minimum in my opinion.
 
sorry but no. The power you need for an electro magnet to hold a 180 lbs skier to a ski is going to be so much more than anything you can generate from a ski full of solar cells. Solar cells in the first place are very brittle, and you would need them to flex with the ski. Second off this would cost a load of money to make, solar cells are expensive. Sorry but this is a terrible idea.

Even to use just electromagnets for a binding isn't realistic since the power used is so great, not to mention everything that is metal will stick to you, including rails
 
this was my thought process as well, which got me thinking about electro magnets because you could just cut the power source
 
demagnetize isn't the correct term, im sorry. i meant for like a piece of rubber or some sort of insulator to get between the binding and the boot.
 
unless you are on the other side of the magnet...then you would just float over them that would be dope
 
really? I've heard nothing but good things about these but I just wouldnt feel secure on big lines. granted i'm 6'4'' 210lbs. do you ski pretty hard on them or mostly for touring? I couldnt feel any less secure on my pure silveretta's. but theyve been good to me for the past 4 seasons
 
i just want a good durable binding that the breaks dont fuck up all the time and it would be sooo nice if it was like snowboarding one or tow different hole patterns and you could change them in and out
