Sochi Is Over. Thank God, And Good Riddance.

The five-ringed circus has closed up shop, except for the Paralympics coming up in a few weeks.

Let's take a moment to enjoy the peace and quiet before we get back to real mountains, real trees, and real skiing.

In other news, I'm working on a final Sochi recap for Newschoolers with my thoughts on how it all went down, and what it all means. Keep an eye out for that on the News page tomorrow.

I'm proud of all our athletes and how well they represented the sport, as well as Luke VanVallen (sp?) Commentating, but really looking forward to things settling down and getting back to normal.

my after thoughts of the Olympics....

Fuck Nick Goepper for his douche publicity stunt to get laid by a 14 year old girl, like cant you do something better with your fame ?

halfpipe was weak mostly because of weather, but still it was weak.

Henrik and Jossi killed it

Miley tweeted Gus.

What I remember from the olympics:

-Canada won gold in mens hockey

-Speedtrack ice skating was a crazy final

-Skiercross was a crazy final

-Henrik had the time of his life (I really want to hear more about his experience)

-Figure skating is a fraudulent sport

-The poor reporting of skiing on the CBC

-a jump in 10000% of gaper Olympic talk of all ages.

Couldn't agree more.

Everyone wants to get rid of it right before and after a presidential election. But a month later no one gives a shit.

Imported from Sochi

"The switch" - don't let your parents catch you doing it

"Wutang is for the children" - HH reminds us who wu is really for

Aaron blunk losing it when he sees his score 4.20

Everyone likes free mcdonalds

NZ bitch gets pissed at expensive ski holiday

Wells' hitting urban in Olympic village

Weather being shitty

Nick Goepper is a nice guy!

I liked watching the Olympics, but I didn't like seeing all the threads on it here.

The olympics are fucking dope, some events are gay but most nights some mental shit was going down, although now i can now watch all my tv episodes which got stalled cause of the olympics

Sorry. It's kind of my job. I hope one more article doesn't hurt your feelings too much.

It's cool that it's your job. By why start out by saying thank god it's over and good riddance? If you realy mean 'good riddance' then don't write about. If you really plan to write about it then hype it as a good thing. It's actually OK to be positive about things, try it, you might like it.

I mean good for them, publicity for the sport increasing especially for Goepper and Kenny G, not as much Joss but...

Also:

-Bandwagoners

-Lyman and 4.20

-Henrik and Wu Tang

-Celebrities and Olympians hooking up (or should be)

-Free McDonalds

-Ski cross disaster/photo finish

-puppies

-A lot of people got hurt (Kaya, M Voisin, +)

-Jamaican bobsled team

Also I though they would be throwing down more in the pipe, but the conditions were less than

people hating on the olympics are like hipsters.. Just hating it cause its in the mainstream. Either that or they are jealous. Winning an olympic medal is pretty fucking boss and brought good attention to the sport. Cool seeing skiers on letterman and shit like that

Anyone got twitter? Click any tweet Gus or Joss made, like 10-20 replies of thirsty girls. it's pretty funny.

Except that the function of journalism is not to report only the good shit, right?

Not liking something is the perfect reason to write about it; it's the whole point! I personally cannot wait to read what he comes up with, I guarantee it'll be a lot better than some pro-Olympics gung ho crap.

i thought the olympics was fucking awesome. couldn't have asked for a better way to showcase our sport.

slopestyle comp was EASILY the best competitive skiing event i have ever watched. Pipe was OK, but still pretty good.

the rest of the olympics were super fun to watch too, including the downhill skiing, bobsled, and speed skating.

I think it was all cool, but it wouldhave been better if it

A. Wasn't in Sochi,

or

B. The russians actually planned out what the fuck they were doing and got it done.

I still say they should have put almost everything at higher altitudes, especially the halfpipe, slope course, the downhill course, and probably a few others. Would have been good to not crown people "best in the world" based on how well they could pond skim through slush.

I'm glad it's over simply for the reason the NBC's coverage was complete and utter dogshit. They hardly showed any of the actual events and instead spent most of the time running bullshit emotional interest stories and montages that no one under the age of about 55 actually gives a flying fuck about. Typical NBC Broadcast:

0:00 - Intro with Bob Costas

0:05 - Actual Event

0:10 - Commercial Break

0:15 - Bob Costas talking about his eye infection and why it's important to you, the viewer.

0:25 - Commercial Break

0:30 - Actual Event

0:35 - Commercial Break

0:40 - Story about an athlete's parent/relative/best friend who had to overcome a knee injury, cancer, AIDS, chronic depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and possibly death.

0:50 - Commercial Break

0:55 - Outro featuring Bob Costas and interviews with athletes we barely got to watch.

Let me take the time to respond in detail. My thread title "Thank God, and Good Riddance" is my interpretation of what a lot of Newschoolers members are probably thinking after the recent glut of Olympics coverage here and elsewhere.

It really has nothing to do with my opinion of the Olympics themselves, which honestly is somewhere in the middle.

As to me still writing about them, I thought Newschoolers might appreciate an overall view--encompassing both good and bad aspects--of the Games in Sochi coming from someone who was there.

Ok I understand that you are completely brainwashed into thinking that this olympics was a complete and utter failure but I'd like to see some real evidence before you blame this on the Russians.

Vancouver had altitude and snow problems too. They were flying snow in from the mountains to Vancouver where all the freestyle events were held just the same as Sochi was storing snow a year in advance. The weather for all the events seemed pretty much great besides skiing halfpipe so I dont know what your problem is there.
