So you hated our Movie...what went wrong?

So we just released our first attempt at a full length movie and after 850 views and only 18 upvotes among more than a couple down bumps. We are curious as to what went wrong?

Right, so the skiing wasn't 'amazing' and the camera work wasn't too hot either. But we thought the editing was better than a lot of junk surfacing the internet these days. Apparently we were dead wrong...So, what went wrong?

What sucked most? Why did ya'll hate it so much? Was it too long? Too boring? Not funny enough to grab your attention? What was so terrible about the editing?

Dont like the skiers? Or did we just not capture them correctly? Any help in giving us the right direction in analyzing this Failure would be hugely appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to watch if you do decide to sit through 16 minutes of "crap."

Oh, ya'll like the bunch right? Why not give Tobias Sedlacek a chance at the 12 minute mark?

Not gonna lie, I didn't like this after the first 4 minutes. I think the problem is the footage is super duper shaky. I don't know. I didn't like something about the footage and I think that was it. It wasn't the quality at all, that's beautiful. Also, I hated the style of the first two guys. I think it might just be me, but I don't like tight clothes. That's about all

So, I thought the title was awesome!

The opening shots don't get me super stoked, I think in a film this long the first few shots have to be banger to keep people watching, It's almost like you went for a hood crew vibe without being as crazy as the hood crew.

Camera work wise, yeah, smoother would be nice, just holding it straighter would help a lot of shots.

The skiing is not bad, your pow seg was sick,

Not trying to put you down here, just trying to offer constructive criticism.

I felt like it was a little too amateur without being super funny, like hood crew of LTC. I think it might have done better as a series of edits, it can just be hard to watch that much in one siting. Also, we are pretty spoiled by the amount of free content we are getting these days, films with very high production quality and super good skiing. I think all of these factors combined for the reception you received.

Don't give up though, maybe go for some banger edits next year and then give the movie another shot?

This is great! Thank you both for chiming in on this forum post. Already accepted the fact that this was a big flop so no offense here or bummed feelings. Keep the blunt comments coming! more critiques the better !

Thank you Thank you Thank you, really appreciate any opinions at all

Skiing was subpar, filming was a little shaky and looked like your friend who has never held a camera was doing it, the shots were never really in full legit focus, the transitions from actual skiing to fucking around was off, the music with the first set of film did not match at all, when there was music the drops were not synced up at all, and I could have done with the "rollin" every time someone dropped.

The zoom effect was a bit weird, and i think a lot of the first few minutes were pretty out of focus. I think it would've been better as a few webisodes rather than a movie

That first pow seg was sick but all the park shots and random riding around the mountain had weird camera work that just made it hard to watch.

Honestly, after watching the first 6 minutes the music started to drive me a little crazy. Maybe its just me but I couldn't flow to the music.

As well I feel the short-zoomed-slow-mo clips were a little redundant.

As stated above, I feel it would be better received as a series of edits or maybe just a 2 or 3 edits through the season and post season.

Good job though! Definitely could tell there was a good amount of effort put into this!

I think the filming plays a big role in it. I feel like I am focusing on the shakiness and some of the shots being a bit out of focus more than the actual skiers and tricks.

I also agree with the other comments people have left that said the beginning didn't do enough to keep the viewers attention. The film gets started pretty slowly with the off mountain stuff and then the first few actual shots are unreal to want me to see what is in the rest of the film.

I'd say the biggest downfall is a simple mismatch of "quality of footage" with "intensity of mood." The editing, music, and general presentation required about 5x bigger tricks to work well.

Not gonna lie after about 2 minutes of actually skiing shots felt like i was had mad motions sickness every shot had weird angles and siper shakey camera work.

I feel like way more work was done editing than filming, and it makes it look like youre trying to make up for the generally poor filming. Whatever weird zoom lens effect is going on is not working, especially in the opening segment. The pow segment is better in that it isnt overedited and way less intense than the rest, but the voiceover isn't my thing. The timberline seg would be really fun to watch if it wasnt so shaky but as it is it's unwatchable. Also think it should be generally more mellow, since youre having more fun and fucking around than doing triples. If this was made into a series really chill webisodes though I would definitely watch them.

Ok here goes.

1. riding was good, but there was a lot of shots that for your guys level of riding was b footage and i think the whole thing could of been cut down to 10 minutes.

2. to many wonky second angle shots and the ones that were zoomed in after they land. Yes one here and there is nice, but it felt like it was after every shot

3. WHY NOT SKI SCHWEIZTER, guys from nic.....skiing silver......it alla dds up to ski schweitzer!

Yea I just watched it, and personally I love am films, the quality of skiing doesn't bother me at all, I really enjoy people getting at it.

But the quality/editing style was a little inconsistent, there were some shots that were really quite good and well done and for a few seconds I felt like I was watching a different movie, then some which had a lot of potential, but didn't quite look nice either because it was out of focus or shaky or too close to the skier. And a large portion of the shots were just wrong, both out of focus, shaky, really close or too far and the filmer claiming and talking a lot made feel like I was watching paranormal activity at times.

That being said I'm stoked you guys went for it and would love to see another shot at it, there definitely is some potential for really good quality and sick skiing with your small spurts of professionalism and creativity in there. Final criticism is that it seemed like you guys were maybe trying too hard to be either funny or generic or something, with the editing style and the jokes and comments by skiers. Not everything, but at some moments I got that vibe, but I do encourage you to have fun, do your own thing, DON'T change your dynamic because of this, but maybe change the process of your execution to make it more crisp and a cleaner version of your guys's vision.

Keep doing what you love doing!

personaly i think that music is more important than film quality and the tunes didn't really match the style of skiing in the movie.

i enjoyed watching it. I like the sound and editing style. Skiing wasnt specular but it was cool to watch. Only grip is that the footage was way too shaky. Invest in a glide cam, it will make your footage a lot cleaner. Or some of the shots might look shaky if your shooting in a low fps. But i look forward to see you guys film something for next year.

not to be too big a dick, but the skiing just wasn't good other than in a few select shots. Editing & overall creativity of the edit wasn't anything to write home about either.

the filming is bad because its way too zoomed in and makes it so you can't see what the skiers are trying to do

Huh. I didn't watch the whole thing, kinda skipped around, but I thought most of the shots were too wide to really grab my attention.

I just watched the first 5 minutes and I'm not going to lie. there was something about the editing and shooting that made me feel dizzy and slightly sick. Maybe try getting a stabilizer and use longer shots instead of a ton of them clipped together. The skiing at the beginning also wasn't good enough to keep me interested.

gotta chill out with the zoom effect on landings and shit. definitely need to improve on the filming. get a glide cam or a stabilizer of some sort. or if u want to stick to the shaky fisheye type look then it least keep things in frame. but i think if you're filming a movie, at least stabilize your shots. the type of filming you had definitely could've been done in separate edits. improve skiing, more corresponding intro, and i think you should be good

I thought it was decent and was surprised to see that many down votes. Overall I thought it was entertaining because their were some promising shots.

The skiing had style and the tricks were not redundant but the major flaw was the editing. the first 5 minutes made me not want to watch because it was way too zoomed for some of the shots. The tricks were not able to be showcased well due to the filming.

the editing was also weird because things felt out of place and pointless in parts.

One other point is that calling it a "movie" causes viewers to sets expectations high. It was some pretty good stuff, just maybe in a different format and with a bit of brushed up filming.

I don't know, I guess for me I just have to be really into a movie to get myself to sit down and watch it for >10 minutes and I just wasn't really stoked on it. I think just the level of skiing was a little lower than what I'm used to seeing in movies (b/c Im spoiled by NS) and mixed with the filming just gave it a kinda weird vibe. I dig what you guys are going for, maybe a little more diversity tho, like hit some urban possibly, get some solid pow shots (which you already have), and get some nice flowy park shots. Honestly, follow cam doesn't need to be done if it is that shaky, even some stationary tripod shots can be dope. Overall, you guys have potential to make a tight movie, the pieces just aren't fitting together yet.

I think it was 1. filming 2. vibe was killed by something in certain segments (music, gas station scene, etc.) and some more minor things.

But probs to OP for asking for feedback!

Pretty much nailed it

I think the vibe was all off too. I liked some of the guys talking, there were a few funny moments, but the skiing was off. Just acting really hard with almost joke like afterbang at points. If it was more of just having fun out there and showing stoke i think it would be better received.

just my 2 cents.

Biggest things for me was the music and the fillers, everyone's segment could have been a little shorter too. Really not a fan of watching tight pant skiers, something about it's just unpleasing to look at IMO.

yeah should have said this in my other post but mad props for doing this instead of getting all butthurt and quitting skiing

cutting was super hectic, music was alright, clips looked like 20fps sometimes, don't do zooms this way, filming was terribly shaky. hurt my eyes

honestly I didn't mind the skiing, it was the horrible filming, kinda lame editing and the intro was boring.

this is not about the movie. it's about the fact that you guys post here approprietly to ask for improvements for your next movie. and you don't get pissed off about the feedback these guys give here. i really really dig that. that's why i'll rate you 10/10.

Thank you so much man, you are the real MVP, we really want to be able to improve what we did wrong the first time around, and we really love the constructive criticism everyone has given us.

I'm a big fan of seeing skis land and what the feet are doing. A lot of shots had from the shin up. I liked the movie but that was my bugaboo with it

i think the biggest issue was presented during the opening "sponsor" segment. while I am perfectly willing to believe that your movie was partially sponsored by the entire nation of Nepal, I also believe that they expected to be properly represented. your picture of their flag is in the shape of a rectangle; this is just not the case. you know, the shape of their flag is different for a reason, and they are proud of it. if you want to keep such "ballin" sponsors like ice cream, abduction and nepal, you have to at least see that they have needs too.

Almost annoying how hard you guys are on yourself. You didn't fuck it all up, it might not have been as banger as it was in your mind, but is it ever really? Stop telling yourselves it sucked ass and start acknowledging the things to make it better and the effort you all put into this movie.

I think we did a great job, I just want to use the criticism to make it better next year
