So when you're seriously considering a career thats on the Top 10: worst majors list....

You should be inherently suspicious of any "top ten" lists like these because they grossly oversimplify the employment prospects of each respective industry.

Let's look at photography: they're measuring the average income of photography majors based on the model of salaried photography jobs, saying that even the top photographers make below average salary. This is bullshit; new media careers aren't generally modeled around the traditional payroll structure. The reason why the numbers paint a grim picture of this major is because the kind of people go get photography degrees are faux-artsy kids who have hardly touched a camera prior to entering college. Most successful photographers are smart enough to get a business degree, if any, and usually make over six figures.

The secret to making it in the art industry is twofold: 1) understand business 2) don't suck

Just because there's a huge pool of soccer moms shooting DSLR's doesn't necessarily make photography a poor career prospect.

It reminds me of that quote about statistics being like a bikini: what they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

I resent the stereotype that we're all rich materialistic dick heads. Some of us are artists who are cynically navigating the system with our degrees.

You sound like a fun person. The point is that if you find a job you enjoy your life will be happier regardless of the $. Not that if you sit on your ass and do nothing money will magically come to you.

I can think of a ton of jobs where I would make much more than I do now. I can't think of that many jobs that I would do for free. I don't make a lot of money, but I love what I do and I don't mind living cheaply. So I'm not going to retire and buy a 65' yacht, who cares.

Anthropology is my passion. I love learning about it, I love doing digs, and it makes me happy. SO I'm going to chase it. I can live smaller but I'd rather be poor and happy than rich and hating my life.

I wonder if this is done by major or the job field after uni. I know about a third of physics majors work in engineering jobs right after graduation, hopefully this graph carries over for me (aerospace engineering!) Regardless, I plan on doing graduate studies in engineering so it should be all good.

Also OP, what is your major right now? Some of the majors listed in that list (anthro especially) have similar majors that you'll have a higher chance of being successful in. Just from personal experience, I was originally doing a bachelors in digital audio arts (Bfa) and ended switching because I realized just how much of a waste of time it was. Now I'm majoring in physics with the possibility of specializing in a field that is similar to my former degree but will give me far more options down the road for jobs.

Also remember that university is only four years of your life, the way I've approached it is I can get a degree that I can support myself quite generously on that I still enjoy and after university I can do what I enjoy. I may take a diploma for recording and music production or like I mentioned earlier move into engineering or even possibly architecture. There are majors that greatly limit job options, especially in the fine arts and humanities, there are also majors that give you many options such as engineering, physics, math or computer science. I'd say maximize your options right now, for all you know in two years when you're finishing your degree you may no longer like the field you chose to study in.

Just a different perspective on it, I always found the more choices you have, the better off you'll be.

You seem to have confused archeology and anthropology. You're off to a great start. Chase that dream! (just not in traffic)

Anthro and archaeology go hand in hand. All of the archaeological field studies are offered through the anthropology department at my school.

Isn't that precious? A pinkname gets called out on something and immediately a poor, lonely, acne-plagued neanderthal with no game comes desperately rushing to her aid. Calm down buddy, this is the Internet. Chivalry doesn't mean shit here and it sure as hell won't get you into her pants.

Seems much more likely to me that you got something wrong and now you're pissy because the whole internet knows how stupid you are

That pretentious comment of yours was asking for it so no need to get hostile, and the pink name plays no factor in this. Looks like you're the one who needs to calm down here, buddy.

Woah super suprised seeing graphic design on that list, along with so many other art majors which is sad but the truth.

How old are you? I know a lot of people who live at home with their parents and not a single one of them are "pathetic and useless". Most of them are doing it to save money so that they can support themselves without having to rely on their parents anymore instead of always asking for help. I myself chose to move home so that I only have to work part time and can focus the rest of my free time on starting a Consulting business. Please tell me how utilizing my parent's willingness to help support me in starting a business is pathetic and useless. I didn't want to move home, they didn't want me to move home, but we both knew it was the smart, effective choice to build my business.

if that's gross pay, then I make more then all of those.

on a list of top 10 worst jobs in Canada miner is #1 and electrician is #7, so I don't know where a mine electrician would put me.

And I say its a crock of shit. I love being an electrician, and all the miners I talk to enjoy their jobs as well.

I can't possibly see how they rank electrician as being worse then a plumber, talk about a shitty job trollface.jpg

here's the list:

2. Courier

3. Builders’ labourer

4. Journalist

5. Sous chef

6. Truck driver

not true at all. I graduated last december in ME. Got two job offers. One with Kiewit (a very well off fortune 500 company) in Kansas, starting out at $77k a year and one in my home town in Montana for considerably less pay starting out. I took the job at home, making less money but being with my family and friends. (plus im not in kansas). But out of my whole graduating class, Im pretty sure we all found jobs in the western united states. I know for a fact that no one went overseas, plus out of all of the job fairs, recruiting sites, and whatnot, no company that I saw was looking to hire for overseas

with every highschool counselor drilling STEM majors and 4 year universities into their students heads, I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years the STEM jobs become really saturated with people.
