So whats up with these rocker skis

i dont know much about them and i have tried searching for them, whats the 411 on these bad boys, and body know the mid foot for them?
 
It's a kind of camber...flat in the middle of the ski, and raises up towards the tips and tails, if you layed it on the floor, the middle would lay flat, and in front of the bindings and behind the binding would progressively raise into the air. Hope that helps, try to see some Pontoons in person to get a better idea of what it is.
 
I think he means the Salomon Rocker. It's reverse camber, looks pretty wide, NOT a twin tip

The Hellbent, that one is a twin. It replaces the AK series.
 
This is correc. The idea behind it is that deep powder is more of a liquid then a solid. Its like a suferboard and keeps ur tips from ever diving.
 
i've been hearing alot about how well they do in the park with butters and all that other crazy jive talk.
 
the idea was for powder but its getting on into the park like pep my friend demoed a pair hesaid the balence on the rails was nuts he couldn't fall off
 
So is rocker the same as Line's "early rise"? Does the EP Pro still have regular camber under foot? I'm confused :-(
 
^^ People thought fat skis were pointless 10 years ago and now everyone is on them...it's the natural evolution of ski design. Once more people skis the rocker skis they're understand that the tech has a place in beginner skis, park skis, and powder skis... they make it easier to ski and that's what most people are looking fore.
 
to an extent. apparently, from those who have ridden say they perform very well on rails and with butters. obviously it is straying from thier original purpose.
 
In park it's great because you won't catch edges as often and you can butter better....on ice everything sucks, so you should move.
 
The problem with rockered park skis is that they will be slow. Really slow in the case of the Hellbent because the rocker is fucking huge. If you don't have a steep park you are going to be casing all of your tables. Fun to play around with, but there's a reason Andy and Pep didn't do well in the X-games, they couldn't get enough speed.
 
Hahaha, I thought I was just going crazy when I was watching Andy and Pep's segments in ski porn thinking their skis were curved up. Didn't the Spatulas have the same thing?
 
Yeah. That's a common criticism of the spats, ARGs, and other rockered pow skis: they're slow as hell out of the pow because they have less surface area on the snow. I'm guessing this will mean easily dingable race bases to make up for it.
 
Yes, reverse camber is what its called, because all normal skis have a camber, but it goes down instead of up, but when your skiing on it it bends so that its flat, but creates tension which makes turning sweet.

The Hellbents are going to be ill, and I'm sure in the not-to-distant future a compromise will be made between reverse camber and surface to snow for park skiing.
 
initially they were created to work like a waterski in powder, shane McShlonkey originially experimented with skiing AK faces on actual water skis mounted with ski bindings.

Most, in addition to reverse camber are reverse sidecut, meaninig that instead of an hourglass shape, you get a fat person shape. This allows for the waterski like feel.

The Armada ARG is probobly the most progressive sofar in that they have reverse sidecut, but then the middle section that is wider has a normal sidecut so that you can turn on groomers.

unless you ski mad powder and thats basically it i wouldnt get them unless you get another pair

but if you ski pow pow go for it they are supposed to be SICK in powder, but i heard dont perform very well else where....
 
The difference between the Pontoon and the Hellbent is that the Pontoon is way thinner in the tail than in the tip, which makes it great for pow but not so hot on groomers/park. The hellbent on the other hand, is only 10mm thinner in the tail so its a traditional fatty ski with the camber added, like someone earlier said, its replacing the AK's.

rockered skis are designed for powder and powder only. something you park monkeys dont know about.

stick to your park sticks kids. The rockered skis are for the big boys.
 
rockered skis are not going to be big in the park because of their lack of speed, but they are not totally pointless. for example, not catching tips when spinning switch
 
You have it backwards: McConkey made the spatula first, and then did the waterski thing as a publicity stunt to show the idea behind them
 
Ive been riding a pair of Moment skis that are reverse camber, and they are a lot of fun. the only thing I m not to fond of, is if you land forward or to the side they have a tendency to wash out. but they actually ski pretty good on hard snow. the other thing is my skis are not reverse sidecut, just reverse camber so I think that helps on hard pack. And they are semi stiff but because of the camber you can Really butter.
 
First off, Shane did not experiment with Water skis with alpine bindings first, he just did that for fun afterwards. If you read the Spatula Manual, it comes with a history of how the idea happened and the process by which the skis were finally produced.

Secondly, yes the ARG is a little more progressive than the Spat because of the minimal regular sidecut underfoot, but it was not the first. DP skis Lotus 138 had it over a year ago, so they deserve the credit on that front. Also, I belive the Praxis Pow 185 also has a small amount of sidecut underfoot just like the Lotus and ARG.

Thirdly the shape of these skis has been discussed at length on this site and others and there is a shitload of information out there if people just search.
 
you can still make them fast cause they dont have to be as rockered as the hellbents they can make it fairly minimal and it wil still have a fairly large effect
 
the spatulas are a strictly powder ski, with dimensions more similar to a water ski than a snow ski in that they have reverse sidecut and reverse camber. The reverse sidecut makes them useless on the hardpack, but when it is deep, they kill. These new rocker skis that are coming out are gonna be just like normal skis except rockered because theres no pow in the park
 
actually rockers are scary as shit to ride in park

they get crazy chatter and it feels like your iceskating....that is if your making turns

i have riden a bunch of different pairs, in pow, in park, on groomers, and they can be fun elsewhere then just pow, but dont try goin fast on them on a groomer or in the park
