We had one when I was younger. He picked up on his own, that if he was out of food/water and hungry/thirsty, to pick up his bowls and drop them at our feet. His food bowl was not that big of a deal as it was a metal bowl that did not weigh much. The water bowl however was like a 5lb ceramic one.

Definitely smarter than the average dog.
