So what are we going to call a mute grab

that's interesting. tony hawk seems like a good dude in everything i've seen him in

i don't think it seems very plausible to try to change such an old name at this point but hey, "tony hawk said so!" is a decent argument lol

if we were choosing our own it'd obviously be the Auclair grab or the JP grab but the last thing skiing needs is more of our own names for shit that already exists, and the point of this renaming is to honor the dude who invented the damn thing

no clue who did it first but here's moseley in '98. it was also his "logo" as you can see on the tips of the mad trix

Honestly down with a skier-specific name for it - the actual grab is unique to skiers because it needs two skis and really only loosely related to the skate/snowboard equivalents.

Though giving it a persons actual name is a little weird.

How about grabbing “J”?

- Short for both JP and Jonny

- A J is similar to a blunt but has a bit more mainstream appeal

so if its loosely/not related to skateboarding and chris weddle, why not just continue calling it a mute grab?

It's a nice gesture but I feel like at this point a tricks a trick(unless ridiculously offensive). I get acknowledging that we had it wrong, but trick names are there from the people invented them a million years ago. If they got it wrong that sucks, but that was them and 30 years ago. I wouldn't care if it changed, but I don't really care if it does. I'll probably just call them mute grabs so I don't confuse myself.

Maybe make a poll from this thread and best name(that doesn't break every rule and your mothers heart) wins.

biggups to tony hawk for doing this, since he had a part in naming the trick this is definitely the right thing to do

but as skiers, we are pretty far removed from this...I didn't even know that's where the name came from, and I honestly don't even know why we chose mute grab as the name for this grab. Are there actually skiers who can't speak that are offended by this? I doubt it, and it's not like the word "mute" is necessarily a slur, it's also something you do to a stereo or TV.

"tranny find" and "screamin' semen" are both arguably more offensive/vulgar

Screamin semen was named after the guy who invented it. And “tranny” used in the context of action sports is short for transition.

How? Tranny find is landing in a transfer of terrain, and ever done a screamin seamen? That's the most accurate trick name of all time.

It makes sense to change the name for skating and snowboarding, but for skiing "mute" really suits the way the trick looks.

Crossing the skis looks just like the cross on a mute button. I say we keep it

yeah I know "tranny" is short for transition, I still use it all the time and I have good friends who are transgender (they consider "tranny" to be a slur). And to be fair, screamin semen is actually only accurate if you're a dude, and I'm pretty sure girls ski now. I'll still use it though cause tbh it's pretty funny. I was just trying to point out that plenty of trick names can be considered offensive from the right viewpoint.

I just thought of this but the one that has really been bothering me is when skiers in [tag=219876]@SLVSH[/tag] games refer to a Japan as a "Jap," which is considered to be a slur by pretty much everybody. Like, there isn't really any room for debate, just look it up in any dictionary. It would be nice if slvsh encouraged skiers (who probably don't realize it's a slur) to not say it that way since slvsh is so influential in trick nomenclature.

technically it's screamin seaman or seemann, it's named after the person who created it.

As far as at least more offensive trick names would be sex change and gay twist etc(skateboarding). There's plenty more.

Also relevant to thread

"A Fakie Mute 360. Basically, it is a Caballerial with a Weddle grab. It was named a "Gay Twist" "From wiki.

So basically since Tony Hawk posted that, somebody edited out the mute grab to a weddle grab, but it's still called a gay twist.

So yeah, glad he cleared that up or whatever lol.

Because it’s a fun opportunity to honour some of our greats, make another fun weed reference, and not name all our shit after other sports?

FYI from the world of watersports: Dave Kalama (hell-bound co-inventor of SUP) named a windsurfing/wave sailing move the 'Goiter' after watching an episode of Seinfeld that was about goiters. Kelly Slater named his 'Rodeo Clown' inverted double grab flippy thing after a character in an ep of The Simpsons.

I back the name change to weddle for skate and snowboard.

I think skiing should give it to Moseley. He was the first person I ever saw do a spin with a grab and he did it in an event where that sort of thing wasn't really allowed or approved of.

^someone should reach out to moseley or one of the other OG's and see if they can come up with any cool (preferably 1 syllable) names

I might be misremembering but when Vinny Cash was murdering Big Air comps a few years ago, Im pretty sure ESPN wouldnt allow the announcers to say"screamin seamen" on air

Mute grabs were the next biggest thing in skiing back in the 90's, I remember seeing one done in real life when I was riding the Wildcat chair at Alta back then. Some dude went off this jump and crossed his skis with a grab and I thought it was the coolest thing and I had to try it! A few runs later, I had them locked down.

They called it a Genie

You do realize the irony? Haha!

Do you not know what happens when you open up polls like this? There are many examples of this type of pole going arwy. The first one that comes to mind is Boaty McBoatface

If you need more, here you go

idk if changing the grab name straight up will ever work but I think we can all agree that a backflip mute grab should be known as a "JP flip" or "J flip" .

What's the female equivalent of a screamin' semen? A scissor sista? Don't be ridiculous

Mute grabs are iconic. I'm sure there's some square out there offend by blunt grabs too.

Bring back the double pump dump chutes preferably in a 360
