So my friend bet me a new pair of skis...

I run crosscountry at my highschool, and am fairly decent. i can do around a 5 min mile and about a 19:30 5k. (end claim) so my friend, whos is about 5' 3", and probably 180lbs who tpos out at about a 10 min mile, bet me that by the end of the summer, when our school has a "fun run" he can beat me in a 2.5 mile race. the bet ended up being whoever lost had to buy a new pair of skis for the winner. this seems like an easy pair of skis for me, but my question is, is it even physically possible for him to get in that good of shape, and become a good distance runner, merely from running a few miles everyday, or will he just end up losing a bit of weight, and still be slow.

he can do it if he puts his mind too it and trains, i recommend you dont take up that bet without training on a weekly basis

5 minute mile and 19:30 for a 5k? i cant get a 5 minute mile but i still can get 20:00 for 5ks.. but its possible but unlikely for him, just keep running and you will win. Chances are he wont even have the motivation to run throughout all of summer

No. In no way is it physically possible to become faster just by training

Busting ass everyday running will in no way make you even the slightest bit faster, only help you lose weight

I think you should up the bet to $1,000 and a pair of skis because there is literally no way you can lose this race

I'd say you could have very stiff competition if he sticks to a solid work out routine. To be honest, thats about 6 months away. He could very easily turn into a running beast. BUT if you stick to a solid plan as well, you will prob win. Just dont get to over confident in yourself.

haha we already shook on it. im starting track season in a few weeks so ill be running distance there, and will bike and run in the summer as usuall, so i think im set. ill start getting worried maybe if he comes to school at the end of the year looking a bit more healthy. let me put it this way... he is currently one of those kids who spends alot of time inside in front of a ps3, not being physically active. i could be undershooting his weight. hes a big/short kid.

i know a girl who went from 160 ish at 5'7" and not at all physically fit in 8th Grade to #2 on the highschool crosscountry team running 5:10 miles with ease by the start of freshman year.

P.S.

now she is right around 105 and i didnt even recognize her when she came from my old middle school to the high school

Moral of the story: be careful, but i would take the deal anyway

this is what i figured. if it was as simple as" run everyday and you will get fast" then all of the people who run daily to stay at an even weight, would be proffesional marathoners. i figured, he will lose weight, but this kid is just not made out to be a distance runner.

How the hell do you think people get faster? They fucking train....How do they train? By fucking running.

You are dumb. People get faster (especially in a distance race) by training.

If this kid has an ounce of motivation, you may have lost a pair of skis.

alright listen up. I'm a runner. I have a 4:35 mile 16:10 5k 53 400m 1:57 800m etc /claim. HE CAN AND WILL BEAT YOU. You need to train as well. Run ATLEAST 5 miles everyday. I recommend running 45-50m monday tuesday wednesday thursday and saturday. Friday do a speed workout on a track such as 400m repeats. I watched kids come into XC with a 21 minute 5k and drop down to and 18 by the first meet. Dude you'll owe him some skis if you don't work!

at 5.3 he will not have that big of a stride... but then again.. if you go in to it not training .. you will lose..
like im 6.3 240(yeah i got fat it sucks glandualr shit) im active as fuck... but i do not have a long distance runners body... my torso is long and my legs are short in comparison. now my buddy toby is 6.3 at 180 and hes is all legs and has a runners body.. that guy is a beast runner..
i think your safe but dont count him out before the race starts.

21.03 5k after first year running /claim
Just stick to running everyday/every other day. It seems like he isn't very dedicated, but I could be wrong. Just make sure to keep up your own speed, and you should be okay. If nothing else, you'll improve.

17:50 and i never trained besides playing lacrosse.

and to the kid saying he can't because he's short, there was a kid on my high schools xc team who was 5'1" and ran sub 16's. he was fucking insane.

I miss cross country sometimes... I used to break 17 in 5k's all the time back in high school. Now i'm a wreck after years of hockey, soccer, and skiing.
oh well.

lol christ thank you...i cant believe either of those idiots thought i was being serious. I hope that kid comes back after training nonstop and destroys you

i havent lost a bet, but i stopped training for one summer, and well lost 30 seconds, km. i was around a 17 min 5k. and well now i dont even want to try and see what i can run.

keep running, go 3 times a week. not just for the bet but for you. running keeps you in great shape.

so you are intimidated by a fat midget? lmao. with that mentality your bound to loose. good luck, take a banana peel with you incase he starts to freight train your ass...

ugh i used to be an athlete. now all i do is homework sit in school and drink beer. ugh I've gained about 10 lbs in the last year after not gaining anyway for 6 years.
